Ultra-processed food increases risk of early death, international study finds

Each 10% extra intake of UPF, such as bread, cakes and ready meals, increases someone’s risk of dying before they reach 75 by 3%, according to research in countries including the US and England.

Was a bit surprised to see bread there, as it's been a staple of many cultures' cuisines for millennia. Did a quick search, and got some clarity in this list - "mass-produced packaged bread" is UPF, not the stuff you make from scratch or perhaps pick up from the local bakery.

A relief, actually, as I just took a loaf of sourdough out of the oven and was waiting for it to be cool enough to slice into. This article took the shine off the experience for a moment there 😅

Self-hosting your own media considered harmful - I just received my second community guidelines violation for my video demonstrating the use of LibreELEC on a Raspberry Pi 5, for 4K video playback

Who, Jeff? He made a whole video a while back about how he doesn't rely on YouTube, and is also on Floatplane. However, he acknowledges that a lot of viewers can't afford a subscription service, and YT has a massive reach, so he still uploads there, too.

bingle rule

Reply in thread

Feel like a bingle is more like when you reverse into a pole or scratch the bumper, or maybe rear end/reverse into another vehicle at <10km/h. Prangs require panel beating and maybe a trip to the hospital.

Name them

There was a famous 24h florist in my city that everyone joked had to be a front for something. (Turned out it was drugs.)

Coincidentally, there's a shop in my neighbourhood that's also floral-themed and suspicious as heck: it says it sells flowers, but I only see potted plants (that don't appear to be for sale) and earrings on display stands (which do appear to maybe be for sale) when I peek in the window. I've lived here for many years, and I've never once seen it open, no matter what time of day or day of the week I walk past. With rent constantly rising and quite a lot of businesses in the street closing or moving away, it seems highly suspicious that this one could be turning a profit without ever being open.

Pique vs peak. Discrete vs discreet. Pallet vs palette vs palate. The list is endless, and I've been seeing it more and more frequently, even from "journalists" published in major newspapers.

The other day I saw someone put a comma after "dear" in the salutation "Dear [name],".

Age Verification Is Coming for the Whole Internet

Reply in thread

No one needs the internet outside of work.

As someone with a disability (and no car), the internet has played a massive role in allowing me to live independently, which in turn has a profoundly positive impact on my mental health. There are a wide variety of circumstances in which the internet has enhanced life experience - let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater.

What happened in Canada is the appropriate reaction to when a dictator says he wants to take over your country.

I grew up in an electorate that had been 'blue-ribbon Liberal' since the 70s, and Labor representation only a tiny blip before that. Became very apathetic about voting after seeing the LNP win by a landslide at every local, state and federal election.

I'm now in a seat that's been either Labor or Greens since almost Federation. One seat in the House of Reps won't change the world (or even the country, most likely), but it's comforting to walk around my neighbourhood and know that the majority of the people I encounter are certified Non-Fuckwits. (It's also fun on polling day to see offers of LNP and far-right parties' how-to-vote cards declined by pretty much everyone in the queue.)

No flood risk, no bushfire risk and it gets decent rainfall.

As a fellow Australian - where the heck did you find this unicorn of a location?! I've been house-hunting (well, land-hunting, really) for over a year, and everything seems to come saddled with a bushfire overlay, flood overlay, or both. I've pretty much resigned myself to being stuck in a bushfire zone.

(Note: not asking for you to dox yourself with the actual location, though I am deeply curious.)

CommBank winning the Big 4's race to the bottom yet again? The only thing that surprises me about this is that people still bank with them when credit unions and building societies exist 🙄 (The only exception would be international students, backpackers and working holidaymakers, because I hear CommBank's probably the easiest institution for foreign nationals to set up an account.)

Jeez, some alternative facts from Merriam Webster right there 😂 I've never heard a British English speaker (or speakers of any other UK English variant, for that matter) use 'fall' to denote a season.

why is this still an issue?

This is, in part, why I got back into sewing. I've yet to encounter a garment pattern with miserly pockets, and if I ever do, I'd just modify the pattern piece before cutting the fabric.

Bonus: pants/shorts/skirts now fit both my waist and hips at the same time, I can choose the fabric (no more poly blends!) and also the colour and silhouette (so it matches my tastes, body type, and existing wardrobe, rather than just being "on trend").

bingle rule

Reply in thread

Yeah, I think "dinged" and "bingle" are pretty interchangeable. And a hospital trip from a prang is probably more for whiplash or a sprain - not broken bones in traction or being admitted to ICU... You can definitely have an injury-free prang, though, I agree.
