Calls grow for Kristi Noem to resign in the wake of Padilla incident
Did nobody hear her say that the national guard is there to "liberate" the city from their local and state officials? It was in that very same press conference. I get that there's a lot to track right now, but that seems like a bigger deal to me

Michigan 'fake electors' will not face criminal trial, judge rules

Elon Musk barred from accessing US Treasury payments data
Reply in thread
I imagine this looks a lot like what people in the cyber security sector do after a breach. Audit all the code, scan all the servers, monitor everything for several months. It's a ton of work and very expensive, but there are people with lots of real-world experience unhacking systems.

Musk vows to cancel grants after gaining access to US Treasury payment system
There have been two court orders requiring that payments continue normally. It looks like Musk has decided that court orders do not bind him. It hasn't even been two weeks and already we're at the constitutional crisis?

Fucking idiots
The easier case for this argument is terrorism. After it was established that terrorists were so awful that they didn't deserve the normal legal and human rights, and that the government deserved huge budgets and exceptions to it's normal restraints to get them, we now have any use of force that threatens the status quo being treated as terrorism.
Same principal, but easier for those who get really stuck on the pedophile thing.

I'm having a conversation with a family member. Somehow the topic of firefighters comes up. She pauses, looks very thoughtful for a moment, then asks, "Do you not like firefighters, either?"
"What? Why would I not like firefighters?"
"Like how you don't like police."
She knows me well. I boggle at how my distaste for cops could be this misunderstood.

Got tipping rage? This barista reveals what it's like to be behind the tip screen
I feel for this guy having to make a living with the meager pay of a barista, but setting the minimum wage to a livable level and pegging it to inflation is a much better solution. Hell, throw in some single-payer, universal healthcare, and take that item off everyone's personal budget while we're at it.

Without mentioning smartphones or social media, what societal changes have you noticed over the course of your lifetime?
When I was in high school, gay was the generic negative word. If Wendys gave you a medium fry when you ordered a large - gay. If your homie cancelled plans last minute - gay. If you slipped on the stairs and busted your ass - gay. It's bizarre in hindsight.

Exactly. They're trying to scare us off. A little courage now may spare us the need for really scary things later.

NYT for once calling out Trump as he is
Reply in thread
Actually a lot of them don't. It's weird but a lot of polling has found that a big chunk of Trump supporters somehow believe that all the outrageous things Trump says are somehow just for show, or are sarcasm, or just a joke. I'm not talking about the maga hat, rally goers, but the more average Trump voter who says "the economy" is their top voting issue.
Trump couldn't win a national election with just maga. Somehow getting the more normal Trump voters to believe he might actually do what he likes to talk about doing, might really help.

National pride is declining in America. And it's splitting by party lines, new Gallup polling shows
This is the result of the Republican party, starting at least with the Bush neocons, weaponizing patriotism to be a way to slander their critics, and to publicly demonstrate their allegiance to the conservative movement.
After a couple decades now of conservative pundits and politicians responding to criticism by implying their opponents don't love America as much as they do, or even trying to stifle conversation by demanding everyone profess their love of America on the spot, I think everyone else is pretty sick and tired of the flags and pins and stars-and-stripes punisher tee shirts.
