The saddest thing about Persona 5 is that it's still relevant 10 years later (Spoilers)

I recently completed my first playthrough of P5R.

I think it's the peak of the series. Gameplay-wise, the dungeons are really expressive compared to Persona 3's Tartarus. The puzzles are not dated like the ones in Persona 4.

What really sets it apart from the other two games though is the theme and the setting. I think where a lot of games tend to suffer is how disconnected they are to reality and their fictitious worlds are self-contained.

The game is 10 years old already. It's sad to see the state of the world today. In democratic countries, why do we still fall for the false promises of Shidos and Yaldabaoths?

I know Persona 5 is not the first to deliver its message but that only makes it even more concerning. I can really feel the pessimism of some older artists and media professionals when they say their work has no influence in this world.

It can be quite depressing sometimes. But I guess that can also be the sin of sloth...

That said, I'm interested in what Metaphor is about and what sentiments about the world it expresses.

3 Years in the Fediverse: Introducing WikiAni and EroAni, and how you can help the Fediverse!

Can you believe it? It's been three years already!

I want to thank everyone for being around for three years! I really appreciate everyone who has been building communities, participating actively, or even just lurking around and upvoting things!

With that, I would like to introduce a few new services to help people build their communities on the Fediverse.

Introducing WikiAni (wiki.ani.social)

WikiAni is a federated wiki (see Ibis). Hopefully this provides a place for users to write collaborative long form content that is easy to reference across the internet.

Although the significance of federation for a wiki is questionable, I thought it would be an interesting project to try.

I'm still developing the policies for the wiki, but generally you're free to write about most things. Even things not necessarily related to anime.

Introducing EroAni (ero.ani.social)

Erotic spaces have always been a part of otaku culture but are often under attack by the mainstream.

EroAni is a PieFed instance dedicated to erotic anime content and other related media (erotic manga, erotic games, NSFW cosplay, ASMR, etc). Federation with EroAni is very limited. Currently, only Ani.Social and FediNSFW.app are allowed to access content on EroAni (and vice versa).

By having a separate instance for erotic (H) content, Ani.Social's local feed will remain as it is, and users looking for more erotic content can browse through any EroAni community. This also means that other instances that don't allow explicit NSFW can still safely federate with Ani.Social.

The policies for EroAni are still being developed so other users are free to give their thoughts on building up EroAni. Feel free to negotiate!

(You can still continue posting lewd pictures on Ani.Social's local feed. Nothing has really changed about that. Just check with the community you're posting to first.)

Join the Matrix server!

A few months ago, we launched a Matrix server. If you haven't joined already, you can join the space via #space:ani.social which includes chatrooms for anime, manga, and visual novels. There's a general chatroom to talk about anything and everything else.

You can connect using an existing Matrix account but if you would like to use an account hosted under ani.social, feel free to send me a message for a registration code.

Helping the Fediverse

Oftentimes, I see people asking, "How can I help and support the Fediverse?" There are many ways to do that:

  1. If you know how to code, please consider contributing toward the open source development of Fediverse projects such as Lemmy or PieFed, or even your front-end of choice!

  2. Please don't hesitate to post or comment. I know some people hesitate to post and comment things but please have the courage to speak out your mind! Ascend from your lurkership.

  3. Upvote things! It's an indication to users that their post is seen by others. Lemmy does not have a way to display post views, so upvoting is actually encouraging.

  4. Report rule-breaking content. If you see something that breaks community rules, please report it so moderators and admins are aware.

  5. Volunteer to mod. When a community is calling for moderators and you like that community, try volunteering as a moderator. Likewise, to moderators, please don't abandon what you've built. I know it can be discouraging sometimes, but we should always be ready for newcomers.

  6. Be nice. I always say this and I will never stop repeating it. Being a nice individual has positive effects on your surroundings. This means communities can be healthier just by being nice.

Looking toward the future

In the coming months, there will be a few revisions to the Terms of Use as well as some changes to the branding of the site. I am also removing myself from the moderator position of most communities I am a part of. This is to give other community moderators as much freedom as they want to run communities their way. This also allows me to focus on administrative duties instead.

Lastly, please wish Senjougahara Hitagi a happy birthday! She's the light of this world. The source of truth and comfort in these confusing times. She'll take care of you from ingestion to excretion. We are worms who are undeserving of her but here she is graciously floating like butterfly.

HAPPY GAHARA-SAMA DAY!!!

[Notice] Removal of Lemmit.Online Bot

The Lemmit.Online bot (@[email protected]) has been banned and all its communities have been removed.

The bot was designed to pull in posts from Reddit in an attempt to provide content to the Fediverse. While it was an interesting project 3 years ago, it is evident very few users actually engaged with the bot. Most posts would only sit at 1 vote and 0 comments.

The bot has pulled in so many posts over the years (up to over 5 million posts) that it has come to the point where viewing the bot's profile would soft lock the server. It is also likely that all these posts contribute a significant amount of storage but I have not confirmed this yet.

For these reasons, the bot has been banned and all its communities have been removed. A future policy update will restrict similar bots pulling content from Reddit and other forums.

If you are currently subscribed to a Lemmit.Online community, please seek for alternatives.

Please try searching for communities or asking other members.

Thank you, and I apologize for the inconvenience this might have caused.

Zibai vs Knuckle Duckle (compressed in 25MB WEBM)

Zibai is very strong. Even though Knuckle Duckle favors Electro characters, Zibai can out-DPS my Varesa for this fight. I tried Fischl+Sucrose too but that team is slightly worse than Varesa+Iansan.

Now for the video tech: compared to compressing anime, it's significantly harder to compress video game footage. Anime usually has simpler scenes with very little movement or a lot of static objects and backgrounds. Video game footage tends to have a lot of moving objects and higher framerates. I was forced to render this one at 360p, 30fps, VP9 45 CQ slow. With AV1, I think I can achieve much better. What's impressive here is Opus: at only 32kbps, the audio still sounds acceptable.

We now have an experimental Matrix space (again): #space:ani.social

A few days ago, I made a post about our new Matrix server. I made the unfortunate mistake of using Dendrite which was already abandonware. Sorry! 🙇

This is fixed now that I have migrated to using Continuwuity.

If you have joined the Matrix room previously, please re-join the room space. The old room was already renamed and should no longer be accessible now. Simply leave that room and join the #space:ani.social room space again.

If you have not joined the Matrix room previously, you may join with an existing Matrix account. If you would like to have a Matrix account under the ani.social server, you may request for a registration code by sending me a message.

Again, my apologies! I will be sure to check if software is still maintained before deploying it for public use in the future.

We now have an experimental Matrix room: #general:ani.social

Someone recently posted asking if we had a Matrix room. I used to be opposed to hosting one because moderation can be a bit difficult. The recent Discord issues have shown more interest in Matrix lately so I guess it's worth experimenting on.

You can join the room #general:ani.social using any existing Matrix account if you already have one. But if you would like to make a new account on the server, you can DM me for a registration code. The room is public so anyone can join.

The server uses Matrix Dendrite which means that there may be some Matrix features that are not available yet.
