Judge in US v. Google trial didn’t know if Firefox is a browser or search engine

So we have two options:

  1. A 52 year old federal judge is somehow tech illiterate in a way that would imply they have absolutely no idea about the fundamentals of modern technology.

  2. A federal judge is asking a large number of extremely basic questions to get their answers on official records so that the cases parameters are clearly defined. He is taking extra care because there's not a lot of direct precedent on these issues.

I'm heavily leaning towards number 2 here. The internet likes to pretend everyone over the age of 40 has no idea how a computer works. The year is 2023. A middle-aged person today was fairly young when computers started to be incorporated into all aspects of society and is well versed in computer literacy. In some ways they are actually much more tech literate than the younger generations. It's almost certain that he knows the difference between Firefox and Google.

Billionaires and the climate

More like

"Ivy, you know who I am at this point. Let me attest that most of these people don't actually do shit. There are layers of layers of management and shareholders that allow the average generational wealth billionaire to extract extreme amounts of wealth without doing shit. That's honestly a good thing in your case, because anyone who actually has the ability to make obscene money in this universe is either a superhero or supervillain, and you would have just walked into their secret hideout.

If you do kill him, the best case scenario is a collection of hedge funds you never heard of divy up his controlling shares and keep business as usual flowing. The worst case is Luthor buys the company and makes everything a million times worse as step one in a convoluted plan to kill superman via kryptonite laced micro plastics. The most likely thing is one of those technically secret society orgs seizing control because at this point they just need some win. My money is on the Owls. They've been humiliated so many times they've been officially downgraded to "community advisory committee".

I honestly don't even understand where this is coming from. You and Freeze both have blank checks from both WayneTech and Star Labs to continue your research. Either of you alone could reverse large portions of climate change. If you really wanted to go the vigilante route, you could have just mind controlled him. Darksied is planning an invasion, there are no less than three evil AIs rolling around, I'm dealing with two separate split personalities, and I haven't heard from the Joker in a while which means we're all probably fucked. Even if I did notice, it would take me literal years to get around to actually fixing it. It feels like you are doing this because on some level you want to fail, because that's easier than doing the hard work required to fix the systemic abuses of our system "

"...So I take it the Therapy's working, huh Bruce?"

"Sort of. It's Batman".

"Actually technically right now you're Nightwing. Care to explain that?"

"It's a long story. The short of it is that I'm pulling double duty because Dick somehow forgot how to fucking Jump and Jason took Damien out for "Beer and Cigarettes", which I can only hope is literal because anything it would be a metaphor for would involve no less than two dozen corpses.".

"Jesus Christ and Harley said I was carrying too much stress. I'll come back next week, get some rest Bruce"

"Batman"

"Nightwing "

"...."

Anon clips for Karen

Be me (middle aged white woman, not that it matters)

Be homeowner

Be part of HOA

Not really a huge fan but kinda hard to avoid these days

whatever.jpg

HOA pays for lawn care, so there's that

there's supposed to be an area that they won't touch if they see you planted your own stuff

think it would be cool to grow some flowers

Go up to lawncare guy and ask about it

Looks confused, doesn't speak English

I get it, not his fault

Asked four guys now, all don't speak English

Kinda frustrated, but again I get it

see white guy (super pale)

Assume that he's from America because we live in Virginia

Go up to him, tell him I'm happy I found someone who can speak English

Looks at me and takes in what I'm saying. Seems like he can understand me

starts speaking dutch

Whatever.jpg

Go inside

Husband asks me what's wrong

Gladthatheshere.jpg

tell him everything

Tells me to not worry. He'll go outside and won't stop until he finds someone

sosweet.jpg

Comes back about thirty minutes later

"Yeah most of them didn't speak English, but there was one guy who was super helpful. Turns out he's a university student making some cash over the summer "

"He's actually from Holland, isn't that weird?"

Kristi Noem defends killing her own puppy

I get that social media seems to be a constant stream of outrage with nobody actually caring, but I think this story might actually derail her.

There are articles in Fox News, NY Post, and other conservative media outlets about this. They are fairly critical. The fox news one includes tweets from a "country boy" who is like "there's a difference between taking an old animal out back and a fucking puppy".

A pittance for a second node really

I feel like bluesky is just an attempt by a lot of institutional powers that lost a platform when Elon took over Twitter to make what essentially is a clone of Twitter circa 2018.

What a lot of people forget is that, even before Elon, Twitter had become super toxic. It was basically some pseduo-progressive echo chamber dominated by lazy journalists, virtue signaling politicians, and toxic hot takes divorced from reality. The moderation system was just selectively enforced based on whatever Twitter's SF HQ thought was relevant that day.

I like the idea of anyone being able to spin up their own server and have a space for discourse. While it can be dangerous, I'd strongly argue that having a centralized private organization deciding what is/isn't acceptable is a lot more so.

*Permanently Deleted*

Posts like this confuse me.

On the one hand, DS9 isn't really known by people who don't watch Star Trek. The chance of someone randomly running their mouth about it is infinitely lower than something like TNG or TOS.

On the other hand I can't see how anyone who watched DS9 can call Garek noble. One of the best episodes in the series revolves around him orchestrating a plot to trick the Romulans into entering the war by assassinating a Romulan senator. Not only does he show 0 hesitation, but he correctly points out that Sisco went to him precisely because that's his bread and butter.

They say “anyone can become president”, but this will be the first presidential election since 1970s, where there is no Bush, Clinton, or Biden on the ballot.

Honestly this is sort of ridiculous.

  • Biden is a Washington insider now, but that's because he had a lifetime to make something of himself. He grew up in the middle class
  • I think we can all agree Obama was an outsider without any sort of elaboration
  • Bill Clinton grew up dirt poor in a state that basically only makes the news when something stupid happens.

All three had to climb the ladder in a huge way, that simply wouldn't have been possible in a lot of other countries.

I also feel like Trump embodies the whole "anyone can be president" in his own sort of fucked up way. Trump obviously was born into immense wealth and enjoyed tremendous status, but he was in no way ever considered leadership material by America's political elite. His election was a complete "wtf" moment and wouldn't have happened in most countries. In a more rigid system we'd probably have had something like a Hillary Clinton v Jeb Bush election, which strictly speaking would have been better than what we got but also let's be real we would have all hated it.

I'm not saying America is some pure meritocracy. Bush was a third generation political dynasty member. His opponents were also pretty well connected. It's just that he's only one of several presidents to get elected in the past 30 years.

Microsoft addresses the huge Xbox leaks: here’s Phil Spencer’s full memo

Honestly if you read the actual email I think there could be significant legal trouble ahead.

Spencer talks about how the main barrier to acquiring Nintendo is that they sit on a mountain of cash. He calls that unfortunate. He then proceeded to state a company with connections to Microsoft had just bought a lot of Nintendo shares, and how they could work with said company to make such an acquisition a reality.

The company in question publicly bought a massive amount of Nintendo shares. They then proceeded to pressure Nintendo to invest more capital instead of sitting on the cash pile they have now. They did this under claims that such a move would be beneficial to Nintendo in terms of ROI. However, it would also result in Nintendo being more vulnerable to an acquisition from Microsoft if any of those bets don't pay off.

In short, it could be argued that Microsoft worked with investors to tank Nintendo so they could buy it. That's a huge deal and will probably result in a shitstorm.

The eye-opener commit

Changing the error level in the build config without telling everyone and then making a hyperbolic passive aggressive comic when the senior admonishes you for doing so ?

I'm gonna guess 1 YoE, second job out of college. Enough experience to know what they're doing, but not enough to know when to do it.

Hodpodge patchwork

This post is super refreshing.

There are a lot of "God look at this ugly house listing" communities. Usually when I see posts it's either "gaudy McMansion" or "teardown job listed for $$$ based off property values". I always end up unsubscribing to them because it's just an endless feed of identical posts.

This though? This is uniquely terrible.

l literally did this a few hours ago

Okay so just to be clear.

You are in an extreme heat wave. There is no power. You see your neighbors struggling due to the heat. You have the ability to invite them over cool down. Doing so would cost virtually $0.

You instead post a meme on lemmy making fun of them.

Even if you don't get along with them, doing something like this would be a huge way to mend fences.

EDIT:

So I the Houston Chronicle has a Texas power outage tracker. According to them, there are like 2k customers without power in the entire state.

Also, Texas doesn't have power outages related to grid capacity in the summer that often. The major power outages this year were caused by storms knocking down lines. The huge one a couple of years ago was related to cold weather.

While the Texas grid does have issues related heat waves, it's not alone in that regard. Basically every southwestern state does, including California. Someone in Texas would probably know this and understand it's ridiculous to act like this problem is unique to Texas.

So I this entire thing, like everything these days, is made up to push a narrative.

'One Chip Challenge' pulled from shelves after mother says spicy tortilla chip contributed to her son's death

People are calling this kid stupid. I disagree.

Nobody buying food in America would think that a single serving product would be able to kill you without any sort of prior health conditions. This is a completely fair assumption and one that is important.

Second, the one chip challenge has been in the public eye for a while. There are multiple examples of people eating them successfully in previous years. When things do go badly, it's usually something along the lines of "I threw up everywhere". That's a far cry from dying and along the lines of risks teenagers have taken for decades.

Third, a ton of food items use the skull and crossbones motif. I've seen it on hot sauces that aren't even that spicy. Nobody assumes that the skull and crossbones means risking death. This is, again, because everyone assumes that food is generally safe to eat.

In conclusion, don't sell things in convenience stores that can kill an otherwise healthy person in short order. While this is especially true for children, it's a good rule of thumb in general.

Men losing their mind

Look at this point I know more women with unrealistic relationship expectations than men.

The world has changed a ton in the past twenty years. There's been a lot of discussion about toxicity in regards to male gender roles, and fundamentals changes to what's acceptable for a man to expect in a relationship.

There hasn't really been that discussion in women. While many women have perfectly fair expectations, there are a lot of women who will expect a man to completely reject gendered expectations of them, while having a ton of expectations of a man. It's almost a joke among my single male friends that the more vocal someone is about being a feminist, the more likely they'll expect you to pay for the date.

There's also a subculture of women behaving in ways that would be considered objectively toxic a decade ago, but have been normalized due to the whole oppressor/oppressed culture war narrative. I've seen women bail on long term relationships in ways that are 100 percent because they just want to sleep around. I've seen women push their husband into an "ethically polyamaorous" relationship that always is extremely one sided. I've also seen a lot of women with an "I can do better" mentality that nobody in a relationship would have to put up with.

I'm not saying women are universally awful or anything. I'm just saying I think we need to have the same conversation around how women behave that we had in regards to how men behave.

Anon doesn't like Rorschach

The internet is a place where nuance goes to die and everyone talks out of their ass. Watchmen was all about nuance. Here's why I think this post is full of shit:

Rorschach was an extremely flawed individual. However that title could basically be applied to every single hero except Nite Owl I. A huge portion of Watchmen revolves around that while none of the characters are necessarily admirable they all have some redeeming qualities.

Calling Rorschach an "incel man child " is an idiotic oversimplification of his character. He didn't decide he hated women after watching too many Andrew Tate videos; Rorschach went though an extreme amount of childhood trauma. We see how horrifying the situation was via flashbacks. Even after all of that, he manages to rise above it all and become a genuine hero. He only went full psycho after being exposed to the most vile shit Moore could get printed. There's even a whole subplot which more or less mocks attempts to be an armchair psychiatrist and dismiss him outright.

Rorschach's philosophy also doesn't exist in a vacuum. A huge part of his role is an ideological counterpoint to Ozymandius, who is the ultimate "ends justify the means" type of person. The entire last act makes you appreciate Rorschach's philosophy a lot more. The ending of the book presents a "Lady or the Tiger?" situation where you're not really sure which of the two was more right.

Finally, he has a decent number of badass moments. The whole "you're locked in with me" is straight up cool. It is on some level meant to be such. It's hard not to look at him and be on some level impressed.

Rorschach isn't someone you're supposed to idealize. However you're not supposed to just dismiss him either.

Advertisers Don’t Want Sites Like Jezebel to Exist

I can't take anyone who defends these Gawker media sites seriously.

Their entire premise was to be the biggest asshole possible, justify it using bastardized social justice talking points, and then imply everyone who calls them out is some kind of deplorable.

Jezebel published article after article of extremely offensive and cruel content. I'm pretty sure at one point they published an article about how they beat their spouses. Their former owner stated in court that he would publish a sex tape if the participant was older than 4. Their former EIC talked about how it was important to bully nerds into submission.

These people are fucking psychopaths. It's a good thing they are done.

I'm also not 100 percent sure the premise of this is correct. There are tons of articles on abortion from less tabloid style news orgs.
