They don't harm big tech. Big tech are lobbying for this change. They do it to so instead of actually making their platforms less harmful (to people of all ages) they shift blame to users.

In many places call recording (or indeed processing of personal information which is highly likely to be present in phone calls) requires consent to be legal. I highly doubt this kind of processing is legal in the EU without both parties consenting.

It's a shame what happened with Neato. They were (I think) the first to add LIDAR for great systematic cleaning. Had one of their early models (no cloud, just a screen) and it was great except for the NiMH battery.

These days using https://valetudo.cloud/ is the way to go, to avoid dependency on cloud.

Currently the vote has not reached the EU parliament. The discussion is ongoing between the countries permanent representations / governments rather than elected MEPs as far as I understand.

The person owning the phone where the processing takes place, is the processor of the data in this case. That still requires consent from the data subject per gdpr.

Fair, I was not aware of that exception. It does seem to cover this case, assuming Google is actually not sending any data outside of the phone, use it for further training etc.

It's just DNS based, and iirc dont require any major effort other than patching the hosts file. Of course it is possible it is not enough, but I have high confidence in the authors after also having watched various talks at I.e DEFCON, that i would be surprised if they missed the firmware doing other nasty things.
