r/Piracy probably needs a rethink
Just purge reddit from your mind and be done with it.

YSK: Cats don't like their whiskers touching their food bowl. This is why they beg even if food is still left at the bottom.
That really depends on the cat. Mine don't care whatsoever.

indonesia apparently has blocked x com after its rebranding
Reply in thread
Just use the 1.1.1.1 app, or on your computer (or router) change the DNS to 1.1.1.1
Indonesia is soft blocking via DNS only, very easy to bypass.

Do people think the reddit scraping bots are useful?
No, they are garbage. I block every single one I come across. Else Lemmy is nothing but an echo chamber.

Everything has LEDs now and they drive me nuts
Agree. When my DVD player back in 2000 came with a bright blue power-on LED, that crap started to bother me. Sitting right under the TV, so watching anything in a darkened room means I had that fucker blinding me all the time. Nothing a little duct tape can't fix, but that's not exactly helping.
Ever since I've been actively avoiding devices where I can't dim & disable the LEDs.

Open-source apps are consistently better than the average closed source app on the playstore (opinion)
Many are functionally better and of course don't have any ads, but often look utterly terrible, unfortunately.

YSK you can block Lemmy communities
I wish we could block full instances that way. I blocked 30 different communities on lemmynsfw and every time I browse /all there are 10 new ones.
Now I'm not some prude snowflake, but my use case for lemmy (as it was for reddit) is simply the polar opposite, and having to block all of those titty farms individually is frustrating.

The end of Reddit? Why the blackout is still going – and what happens next
Reply in thread
Yep, we opened up, polled the users, got told to keep it closed, and down went the shutters.

Chinesischer Hochgeschwindigkeitszug fährt 450 km/h
Reply in thread

Yo are fireworks that fun?
I don't like them one bit. Pollute the environment, make unnecessary noise, and are dangerous.

just tried Reddit on boost..... no go, so no Reddit
The cracked Sync app is going strong. They patched reddit official's api key into the apk, and also modified the app ID and browser agent to reflect the official one. They practically can't tell the traffic apart, so NSFW and everything is fully functional.
https://github.com/Liz-chan/sink-for-everyone/releases/
This has been discussed in the official reddit sync discord and the original dev, being the champ he is, even contributed to it.
Sync for Lemmy is also on the way. I never used Boost so can't tell how it compares to Sync, but I used it for >12 years and was always super happy.
Might as well plug the new /c/[email protected] here, I guess.

Have you ever been to Tiananmen Square?
I assume you are trolling, but I have indeed been to Tiananmen square, and will go to Xinjiang in October. My wife is Chinese, and her cousin works there.

What was the biggest culture shock you ever experienced?
Reply in thread
I live in China. It still happens today and nobody bats an eye. I've seen a kid shit on a hospital floor 2 weeks ago, and some old guy pissing against a wall of a shopping mall just yesterday. And this is in a Tier 1 city.

Do people like the bot posts from lemmit.online?
Fuck no, that thing got blocked the moment I saw it. If the actual OP is not there to answer or comment on the advice received, and is fully unaware they even get replies outside of reddit, this whole thing makes zero sense.

Kindle Paperback setting up tips?
No mods required whatsoever, just get your ebooks in whichever format you can and then use https://calibre-ebook.com/ to convert them to .mobi and copy them over via cable. If possible, avoid pdf's - they can be converted, but it often looks shit. EPUB on the other hand converts with zero loss, and that's the most common format on libgen.rs and other ebook sites. If MOBI is available right away, just go for that of course. Conversion takes mere seconds though.
Since I don't buy any ebooks from Amazon directly, I've set my kindle to flight mode right after the initial setup and haven't switched it back on in over 4 years.

Megathread: Reddit Blackout

Redditors, how do you like Lemmy?
Reply in thread
Yep, same. For that reason I never really managed to get into mastodon, tried it for a bit and found the signup system too convoluted, then dropped it altogether. Though granted, I also never used Twitter, never understood why people liked it (and still don't), so I tried mastodon out of curiosity, not actually looking for something.
With Lemmy it's all different. I feel like I need to leave reddit and find a new community, so there's an inherent desire to like it, which makes the adaptation way easier.

I started pirating movies again after a decade
Been torrenting all through with 1337x and yts.mx despite paying for Netflix. The occasional piratebay for more obscure movies. RARBG was my favorite tracker, but sadly, they are no more.
Luckily I live in China where nobody bothers about copyright laws, so I can max out my 1gbit connection that costs me 2 full dollars a month 🙃
