Megathread for Reddit Blackouts and News - Week 1

I've been curious as to what the end user experience on reddit might look like today and tomorrow. The blackout tracker seems to show fairly typical activity though. https://blackout.photon-reddit.com/ That perplexes me.

Maybe people are still checking reddit like usual, but many posts are hours old in the private subreddits that they may subscribe to? I know a percentage of subreddits didn't go dark, but those wouldn't be big enough to cause engagement to stay at the usual levels. Anyone hazard a guess as to what's up?

Oh...thank you guys for keeping up with all the chaos from us new folks slamming your servers!

Reddit to lay off about 5% of workforce

Reply in thread

Part of me thinks that while a majority of folks will remain on reddit, the most active, engaged members will leave. ...the mods, the people posting original content, the people posting the most replies.

Over time, the content on reddit could become even more stale, repetitive, and low quality.

/r/kbinMigration created.... and quickly banned by reddit

I’m on both beehaw and kbin. I’m still trying to understand kbin. I guess magazines are like communities? But the list of magazines, while long, appears to only be local? How do I see communities on other instances to subscribe to them? Beehaw is more understandable. I can see what instance someone is posting from. I can see and subscribe to communities for other instances. I can select to see all my subscriptions from any instance.

So for now, I’ll keep both my accounts. Let the dust settle. Learn how to drive “this thing” and eventually delete an account from a server that I don’t need. It’ll free up space for someone else.

KBin has taken over Lemmy in monthly active users count

I want to like kbin, but I understand beehaw and Lemmy instances better. For the life of me, I cannot figure out the syntax to find communities/instances that are not local to kbin. They have some great "magazines", but I've already started following some communities on other Lemmy instances, so if I opt to use the kbin server and their UI, I need to be able to figure out how to find the communities I'm already participating in.

What niche reddit community do you want to see find a place on the fediverse?

Most of these are on Reddit, but there may be a few that I thought could be specific, but not as niche as some of the ones on reddit. (like no community just for one game)

Van conversion/van life

Birding

Camping and hiking

AmITheAsshole

Each state in the US

Longevity

Kindlescribe/e-ink

RestlessLeg (or a chronic condition community)

Woodworking (bigger builds)

Carving (smaller builds, not furniture or big stuff)

JRPG

Turn-Based RPGs

Action/Adventure Games

please be measured in what you expect of us: a non-binding appeal from one of the people running the site

Y'all have done a wonderful job. I'm in this for the long haul. I've donated once and will again. I think I'll set up a recurring one this time.

I work in tech in a financial aid office. We regularly get slammed with last minute changes from the govt with little details on how they need to be implemented. So we deal with high volume, high detail (because money is involved as is auditing), and high intensity/speed. It's an ugly mix. I feel like y'all could be in a similar boat. All I can offer is hang in there. Keep putting one foot in front of the other. We support you and I bet you'll discover some crazy talent in these communities that has the intellect, time and energy to help out.

Interesting times to say the least.

China’s workers and the curse of 35

That’s all kinds of messed up. To not value experience… it feels like all over the world in “advanced societies” we live in so much stress and are pulled in so many directions, flailing, trying to stay afloat in a cutthroat world. No wonder people aren’t having babies.

Here in the US housing is unaffordable. More and more young adults can’t leave home and start building their own lives and creating their own families. Salaries aren’t even remotely keeping up with expenses. Without security why would someone contemplate getting pregnant?

The response of leadership in the US feels like they’re creating a climate of forced pregnancies instead of solving the root cause. Such gross economic inequities as we have here create lives of despair and shut down the dreams of humanity. Those dreams are the fodder for building strong neighborhoods, having children, investing time and money into your community. Instead we have despair so people hide in their shells, protect themselves; even to the point of being willing to harm others.

Bothered by pot smell, she sued her neighbor to stop smoking — and won

Vape or edibles. I hate the smell too. You can make edibles/tincture with not as much smell because you can get a device that is sealed while you decarboxalate/heat up the weed. Put some oil in there and you've got a tincture.

I now just create a tincture with delta 8 and cbd, cbc etc. Using the isolates means no smell and you can make your own ratios. I create my tincture to help with my restless leg syndrome, so I'm able to sleep and not have pain. I wouldn't want to medicate myself daily by smoking. That sounds bad for my lungs.

What do you game on?

My vision sucks due to double vision so I have to use handheld to get it close enough to my face to see it. (the farther away things are, the more the two images split apart) So it's Switch and Steam Deck for me.

Players replace Tears of the Kingdom’s patched-out item-dupe glitches

Still on 1.1.1 for me. No way am I updating. Thought I bet nintendo will make using the sages easier in an upcoming patch and then I'll be sweating because I'll want that, but not want to lose the ability to dupe.

FWIW, I suck at action games, so I have to expend a lot of time upgrading my armor and getting hearts/stamina. So I end up having to grind. I'm not a fan. What's weird is that I'm finding myself uninterested in building all of the mech that you're capable of in the game. That surprised me. I thought I'd love it. Instead, I'm finding it fiddly and that it's slowing me down too much.

A Professional Artist Spent 100 Hours Working On This Book Cover Image, Only To Be Accused Of Using AI And Being Permanently Banned On Reddit By A Mod

I've run into some heavy handed moderation too. Mine has usually been about my post not meeting some guideline, but not to the point of me personally getting banned. Sadly, every time a post is rejected, the mods just double-down when I state my case. They tend to pull my posts when they start to become popular.

In really large subreddits, I feel like very few people get to contribute. My posts are not usually any different in scope or theme than the ones that are accepted. So it's made me start thinking that the big subreddits there are approved contributors and most of us rank and file folks are reduced to reading/commenting only.
