I got this popup ad on my TV **while watching a DVD**

This is called Automatic Content Recognition and it can be disabled in the settings, highly recommend doing that. It should have asked you whether you wanted it enabled when you set up the TV, as it's legally required to be opt-in in the US opposed to opt-out. Since you're using a Roku Smart TV, it specifically is taking two full resolution "video snapshots" every second.

True masters of the gaming industry

Half Life recently got an installment with Alyx, and just got a free remaster 25 years after release, with the whole non-VR franchise is perfectly playable for dirt cheap on any old system. Portal has received spin-offs. Team Fortress isn't getting the attention it deserves, but is perfectly playable on modern PCs and has aged like fine wine while receiving bugfixes and new community-made, Valve-approved content every so often. Afaik Dota 2 still has an actively supported pro league. CS got an overhaul, for better or worse.

Valve is unique in that they are one of the few developers that understand that sometimes you don't try to fix what ain't broke-- this is why TF2 outlived Overwatch, and will almost certainly outlive Overwatch 2 as it has many other games.

Valve doesn't hold out on releases out of intentional neglect, but are instead painfully aware of how hard it is to meet growing expectations and continue to improve on what many would already consider to be near perfection. That's why we don't have HL3.

Not a Coincidence

If it wasn't obvious that the Debian box is a parody, here's what the Japanese Chinese text along the top reads on each box:

Please read the instructions carefully and use it under the guidance of a physician. It is strictly prohibited to be used in food and feed processing.

Please read the installation instructions carefully and use it under the guidance of the administrator. It is strictly prohibited to use for server installation.

so yes, the title is correct-- this is not a coincidence, the Debian box was made explicitly for this joke

edit: thanks for the correction folks, honestly thought it looked more like Japanese than Chinese at first glance and I am obviously not an expert in either. Appreciate the call-out, very deserved.

response to recent trends rule

Wtf does this have to do with her gender? Are you claiming she does not top the charts in celebrity carbon emissions, but is being used as the scapegoat instead of a man?

The Conservatives aren't attacking her because of her gender, it's because of their her influence. Misogyny has nothing to do with it, they'd do the exact same with any celebrity of any identity/orientation because they're influence conflicts with their agenda, not because of their gender.

This smells a lot like ground-laying for radical feminist arguments, I can't find any other reason you would be here making a mountain out of an imaginary anthill. Moreover, I can't understand why anyone upvoting this would care to see a non-humorous PSA in a "hello fellow teens" vaporware frame on a surrealist/(whatever it's called) shitposting community unless it is meant to be satire.

edit: gendered a pronoun to make it concise who the subject was

New Study: At Least 15% of All Reddit Content is Corporate Trolls Trying to Manipulate Public Opinion

It's not like one of the six biggest power janitors of Reddit has been caught multiple times wrongfully deleting posts, using bot armies to manipulate votes and accepting money from marketing agencies for "consultancy" in social media guerilla marketing.

It's almost like the company doesn't give a fuck what their unpaid help does to the userbase or content because they still gets investments regardless.

Fuck spez, fuck GallowBoob, fuck awkwardtheturtle and fuck Sam Altman.

I propose we take these ideas and build our own drunk driving game that gets gradually more impossible to play and with more risks the longer the run continues. Like Getting Over It With Bennett Foddy meets that DPKR Crazy Taxi clone.

Has ethernet become illegitimate? A librarian flipped out after spotting me using ethernet

Reply in thread

yeah OP needs to provide this detail specifically as it changes everything.

If the Ethernet jack was not on a desk, then it wasn't there for them to use. If they unplugged a cable to make it accessible, that is unfortunately enough to be considered tampering.

If an Ethernet jack was not expressly provided, unoccupied, at the technology access station then yes the access to Ethernet information facilities was unauthorized and illegitimate and could carry legal ramifications. Say what you want about proprietary wifi drivers, you get the access you are given and any attempts to gain further access without authorization are defined as intrusion attempts and will more likely than not be treated as such to some degree. Because honestly, the libraries aren't funded enough to have great security and Ethernet security is harder than WiFi security in practice, despite the challenges being characterized by the same principles.

*Permanently Deleted*

Nothing to do with upbringing.

I was borderline incel. Viewed positive female peers (family, etc.) as completely different from "tainted whores" or whatever.

Bad experiences, chronic isolation are what make an incel. Lonely men without supportive friend groups who turn to the Internet for their social needs. Rejection and dismissal from real world people, acceptance and empathy from the hive mind.

Loneliness does a lot more damage than a shitty upbringing.

Who played on linux before proton?

Reply in thread

deep inhale

WINE IS NOT AN EMULATOR

It is a translation layer. All it's doing is intercepting syscalls embedded in the executable process by presenting what looks like an interface for the kernel it is trying to call, but is actually a translation layer to the true host kernel, mapping the Windows syscalls to their near-equivalent for the Linux kernel. This differs from emulation as the calls are being translated at a higher level whereas emulators translate the low level machine code sent to the processor.

So Proton and Wine essentially just pretend to be the core Windows processes and services a Windows environment provides to applications. It's a Windows interface to a Linux kernel on the backend. And virtually every syscall on Linux will always be faster than on Windows/NT. So you get faster syscall responses with a neglible and wholly insubstantial added overhead that I would reckon is hard to quantify because it is in fact so damn small that the only way I can think of to observe it is to attach a debugger, which slows down the application process notably so that human's can peer into the execution stack.

TL;DR: no, Windows applications have theoretically been faster on Linux than they ever were on Windows since Wine's inception.

acceptable screws

There is one screw on this chart that I have a mortal hatred for. Just one. That being the fat Phillips (called "Phillips/square" on this chart meme thing).

I have no idea why, but some companies can't resist the sadistic urge to put tiny versions of these fuckers on equipment that should just use a torque or Phillips screw head. But no, they want you to truly suffer. Because they don't stop there: they make the fragile little fuckers out of NICKEL. Which means they are extra malleable and prone to strip if you so much as look at them the wrong way. So imagine you need to replace a hard drive on a RAID-type storage pool that's already down two spares and you can't fucking get the drive out of it's sled because the vendor not only hired a bodybuilder to tighten the screws, but simultaneously chose the worst possible metal just for giggles and chose the screw head that they no body will have the proper bit for and will inevitably use a normal phillips on until it strips.

I now have a ritual procedure of putting every drive that gets replaced in the coldest cold aisle in the datacenter for at least 5 minutes just to make these fucking screws less likely to ruin my day.

Fuck whoever invented the fat phillips, even the lowest ring of hell is too good for them.
