Conclusion after reading the comments: the country information is very relevant!! In Germany tailgating is forbidden, and is also driving in the middle lane. It is forbidden to pass using the right lane in highways. In USA I remember the recommendation was different, try to stay in your lane, they considered the constant change of lanes more dangerous than passing using the right lane.

Moral of the story: Don't judge without the complete information.

Organic Maps Forked Over Governance Concerns: CoMaps is Born

Reply in thread

What you call drama is a healthy community fighting against violated principles. So, according to you, what's the alternative? Just keep working with broken principles and never complain? Allow a bunch of greedy members to take over the project?

If you have paid attention, basically community always win: libreoffice vs openoffice, mariadb over mysql, jenkins over hudson, x.org over xfree86, ffmpeg over libav, nextcloud over owncloud, etc.

Right to fork is one of the most important to keep project in community hands and follow declared principles. Some forget that and are just doomed to repeat the history.

Disclaimer: I work on iDempiere who forked adempiere because of community disagreements, which also forked from compiere because of corporative takeout.

Long live to CoMaps!

Open source is a thankless job and I think we've lost the plot on how we treat maintainers

if you're not paying for it, do you actually get to demand anything? (Obviously yes, but we still need some boundaries)

Wrong!! Obviously no. You're not entitled to demand anything. You can ask politely.

You don't like the project? Go and use another alternative.

There is no alternative? Go and write your own.

You don't have the skills? Go and pay somebody with the skills. And if you want the most skilled for the job, probably is the person maintaining that project that you don't like but still keep using for free.

I'm also a switcher from ovh to hetzner. Good service, good support, fast machines, the administration website is very good (ovh was slow and ugly), snapshots and backups are cheap and directly available (AFAIR ovh snapshots required a monthly fee). Hetzner is Germany based, good for GDPR, and now they have data centers in USA too.
