It's obvious for video games because you can assume anyone that wants to be active on a specific game sub is probably a try hard that talks about the meta, or max DPS builds, or other annoying stuff. But then you visit something like the carbon steel pan subreddit, or grilled cheese, and you're continually assaulted with this idea that there are only specific pans and oils that are correct, or that your grilled cheese isn't actually a grilled cheese because it was cooked too close to an open pack of salami.

I love how corporate behavior is all "free market! competition creates better value for the customer!" Then they keep increasing their prices steadily and when that price becomes too much for the consumer they complain about not having any sales anymore and need to increase prices even more to cover lost profits... instead of doing the free market thing which is... ya know... lowering their prices to stay competitive.

As someone that left the US a decade and a half ago, here's some things to go ahead and start getting answers to so you don't have to figure it out when the time comes:

• Figure out how to get a bank account (hopefully you've already worked this one out before arriving)
• Where to buy toiletries and medicine. Specifically deodorant. The UK is mostly spray deodorant where as I'm a stick deodorant person. At one point I was just bringing 4 sticks of deodorant back with me after every trip home. I'm not sure which way NZ leans but it was definitely something I hadn't considered before
• Where to buy socks and underwear you're comfortable with
• Figure out how the health service/insurance works. Go ahead and book dentist and doctors appointments 6 months in advance if possible so you get in the habit.
• Figure out how paying taxes works
• If you're a US citizen, remember you're still required to file taxes with the IRS every year.
• Learn how to make friends. I still haven't figured this one out. Let me know if you do.

My personal theory on why old people become miserable conservative pricks is that we're born into this world knowing absolutely nothing, and spend every moment of our lives trying to figure out what in the fuck is going on. Over time, you start to figure some of it out. Then, when you've finally started to get a hold of some shit, and finally start to get into a rhythm of what you're supposed to do, the next generations come in and start changing shit.

People aren't against things being better. But they are against not knowing what the fuck they're supposed to do in life. The problem is the overlap. Changing something for the better means people that spent their whole life doing it one way are now in a state of chaos and uncertainty, which is followed by fear.

So you slowly become conservative, and resist all change.

The thing that allowed the Democrats to switch candidates was that the Democratic National Convention had not happened yet, which is when the candidate is officially locked in as the party's candidate on ballots for president.

The Republican National Convention was mid July. Trump and Vance are locked in. To swap candidates now would be considerably more difficult for them (not to mention having to fight against a self centered toddler that will refuse to let anyone other than him run).
