Can I block a federated instance?
If you were running your own (even single-user) instance of lemmy, you could defederate with any instance and still participate in others as normal.

What's something cool that you've made?
I posted this last week in a different community but I built this 3D-printed digital counter that tallies the bird chirps heard in my backyard. It’s powered by a Wemos D1 Mini microcontroller.

It’s really hard to hold onto those good feelings from an accomplishment they fade quickly. But the negative ones, even minor, can stick around a long time!

I like that this is a general instance.

I just wanted to say THANK YOU for making a PopHeads equivalent. It's a direly needed space adjacent to a general Music community, as we've all experienced from Reddit.

Cat-astrophe: Outdoor cats are considered one of the worst invasive species by ecologists. And humans are bitterly torn over how to respond.
Keep the damn cats indoors. Simple. If you can't provide them with entertainment and stimulation in the house, then don't get a cat.

Thoughts on media hosting for sharing?
I’ve been thing a lot about this too. Is it a good idea to set up my own single-user instance of Lemmy and post with that to this community? Would that mean if I make a post or comment and include media that it’s hosted on my server?
I ask because I wonder if theoretically I made a popular post here via my instance if it causes a lot of server load for people to see it. Trying to wrap my head around all of it.
Another thought I had is if I decided to create a Mastodon instance and use that to post here as well what the impacts of that would be?

An icon designed with input from the developers. What do we think?
It gives me clown vibes. But it’s better than the current one.

The Talos Principle 2 | Gameplay Trailer
I need to finish the first one too! It's so hard though! I love games like this, Myst, Portal, and The Witness. Can't wait to check the sequel!

do you think older-style internet forums have a place in the future of the internet?
This post inspired me to log back into my MacRumors forum account and start checking things out again. I've been a member there since 2007 with >6,000 posts.

Self hosted FOSS software
I have two instances of BookStack. A public-facing one for bird stuff, and one for home stuff. I also self-host an instance of Plausible Analytics as a privacy-respecting alternative to Google Analytics.

New York City Residents Will Soon Have to Compost Their Food Scraps
We have organic green bins in my city. We mostly just use it for grass clippings though. We only have a recyclable can and garbage can inside the house.

Everything Apple Announced at WWDC 2023
I'm super excited about this space and what it will mean for computing paradigms going forward. I know there is a lot of saltiness at the price, but it's not a shocker. I'm a tech early adopter and will likely want to jump on this when it comes out next year, more so out of curiosity than anything else.
The digital avatar they previewed in the keynote gave me slightly uncanny vibes but I imagine it will improve with time/before release.
