Student protest at Cornell uni...

Reply in thread

it was just a stupid comment, sorry. i thought it was funny. of course i don't want to call them brotests. it's like what the fratboys that we don't like would perhaps say.

i feel like my comment was interpreted differently than how i intended it. it was just supposed to be a stupid dad-joke pun.

Yeah it was Eisenhower

to my understanding, that is very much not true.

the terminology of being a "conservative" did not come from supporting conservation of nature. that might be one aspect, and indeed, still today, there are conservatives that are very much interested in the conservation of nature, but this is not where it came from. it came from schools of thought in the american and french revolution concerning conservation of aspects of tradition, aristocracy, royalty, and religion.

afaik, this has also been the case tbroughout american history as well. perhaps you are referring to people like teddy roosevelt, who identified as a conservative to the public and had conservationist views and policies.

/r/BuyFromEU: "Let's settle the Reddit alternative discussion: Lemmy doesn't need to “beat Reddit”, it needs to feel effortless"

this post has a really weird tone.

they are making bold demands for the developers of lemmy. if you wanna help and get involved, go get involved. open up issues, get in touch, try to understand. making a big ranty post on reddit is not going to be effective in communicating with the developers. i would have been less bothered by this if they had written it more in the spirit of "my issues with/criticism of lemmy".

i agree with the sentiment that if it is not convenient or attractive, then you won't get whole communities to switch services, no matter how good the intentions are and how much one argues on principle.

but so many of the issues people bring up boil down to "there aren't enough people there, there isn't enough content". and with so many people, it feels like they are looking for excuses to not like the less popular and less conventional alternative platform. i get a lot of the criticism, but so many of these comments feel like laziness and cowardliness against trying something new and with a smaller userbase.

a lot of the problems also boil down to federation which is just part of the inherent design of lemmy. i agree with the idea that recommending some canonical homeserver is better than to just tell people to figure it out themselves, and to then be confused by how timelines work. the whole there being buyfromEU channels in multiple different servers is just the unfortunate reality that this "movement" or topic is not a specific closed group.

i, for one, like the idea of more local scenes, with different UIs. it is like more traditional forums, where you need multiple accounts for different forums. with lemmy, it is similar, but most of the time you only need one account and the forums are more interconnected. when a whole community lives on one specific forum (yes, even today where this is rare), the community is usually happy. and with the rare cases lemmy scenes that are localized in big numbers in one channel, i get the impresssion that people are happy there. the interconnectedness is a nice bonus. but also, i get that buyfromEU is not that big of a subject to just join a whole new forum for.

ultimately, the whole buyfromEU thing on reddit is a consumerist culture anyway. people want this stuff together with their cat videos. and dankmemes. and their news. and porn (actually, most people use a separate account for this, this would be a pro of federation of lemmy). it is consumerist activism. people want a classical social media experience, and you will just not get that with lemmy.

i personally think that the biggest issue is userbase. lemmy with the biggest userbase for a spwcific topic would mean people would have an incentive to go there, and most people who i know who tried lemmy who stuck around for longer than a month, seem to get used to the federation stuff. like, it's all good once you get your feed together.

Fucking math...

switch the order of the last two terms (the second equality), put the 0.01 in the middle, and it makes a bit more sense when read as calculation steps.

0.04 * 75 = 4 * 0.01 * 75 = 4 * 0.75

basierte einstellung.

i like the sentiment, but i hate the imagery.

a dad wanting to have his alone time with his hobby that is miniature trains is the thing that is supposed to indicate autism?

i don't like this because it stregthens ideas about which hobbies are "normal" and which hobbies are "weird" and only bearable for autistic people (i am exaggerating, of course).

wanting to have alone time is a completely normal thing for neurotypical people, and the dad even expresses it verbally, explicitly.

Hang on to your Firefox!

Reply in thread

You're severely underestimating the amount of work open source maintainers put into those things.

Which Firefox fork is a hard fork? Which Firefox fork has a hard fork of the Gecko engine?

As far as I know, all Firefox forks are dependent on the Gecko engine, and basically have Firefox as upstream.

I would love for you to prove me wrong, but I don't believe any of these projects, though with many highly dedicated contributors, would be able to maintain active development of a web browser engine that can keep up with new modern web standards.

There is a reason the Ladybird project is taking so long to materialize and has many sponsors giving significant amounts of money.

Internet shit is hard. Firefox and their forks only work because Mozilla is fucking huge and has money to develop Firefox as part of the three big industry standard web browsers. Even though Mozilla does a lot of stupid decisions and spends the majority of their money on dumb shit, and they put dumb shit into the default Firefox that they ship, it is still excellent in many ways and the very best thing we have as a FOSS web browser. I encourage everyone to use Firefox with hardening or one its forks.

I agree with the article, and people saying "Yeah let's boycott Firefox, use [insert Firefox fork here]" every time there is a Lemmy post on a stupid decision by Mozilla are effectively not boycotting Firefox at all, or if they recommend a Chromium fork they are supporting Chrome/Google, even if they don't think they are. These forks are in essence just preconfigured and hardened Firefox/Chromium profiles with a few bells and whistles here and there.
