Where do you go on Lemmy for reliable news and politics?

They focus on America, as such have a broadly Western bias. Are they less biased than others? Probably. But you cannot report the news without some form of bias. The act of looking at an event and deciding what facts to include and what to leave out introduces some level of bias. As it is impossible to include every detail of an event, especially in text form, you’ll end up with a biased retelling

Many subreddits coming back online and daily posts/comments appear to be returning. It is a little disappointing to see how little of an effect this actually had. What are your thoughts?

I also think lemmy now has more momentum. More users and content will follow, even if not in as massive groups. This new usage will help improve lemmy and next time Reddit fucks up, lemmy could be even better situated to handle the refugees and less will return. I joined lemmy when I left Twitter and was exploring the fediverse. But it wasn’t too active til now

YouTube tests blocking videos unless you disable ad blockers

Tough choice. I feel like if you’re a creator who uses YouTube as your sole source of income, a few bucks a month, even like $100 could be worth while. Tragically would lock out people just starting, but maybe they can get some kind of free trial? On the consumer side tho I imagine people would be much less likely to pay, but maybe some people could be convinced if it was real cheap.

If you had to redo your self hosting setup, what would you do differently this time around?

I would’ve gone with a less powerful nas and got a separate unit for compute. I got a synology nas with a decent amount of compute so I could run all my stuff on the nas, and the proprietary locked down OS drives me a bit nuts. Causes all sorts of issues. If I had a separate compute box I could just be running some flavor of Linux, probably Ubuntu and have things behave much more nicely
