Hertz, showing the difference between science and engineering
He probably would have figured it out had he had time to evolve into Megahertz.

Reddit in talks to embrace Sam Altman’s iris-scanning Orb to verify users
On the one hand, I understand the inherent limitations of pseudonymous social media and why a corporation and even end users might benefit from authoritative user identification.
On the other hand, oh hell no.

I know we’re all here for the LOLs, but just a quick reminder: it’s ok to enjoy things without being able to monetize them.

A working class hero is something to be

It’s not dumb, it shows the brilliance of the ruling class in controlling the narrative. A lot of people will think this way and continue to support them even though it’s grossly misguided and definitely not in their own best interests.

What's something you immediately judge a person for when you see them wearing or have?
Reply in thread
On two occasions I made a louder-than-necessary comment to my kids to stay away from those people (MAGA hats too) while they were within earshot and then listed reasons why. Got some dirty looks, but no one ever approached me. Because they're a bunch of feckless cowards.

I tried to outsmart the social media algorithm. Here's how it outsmarted me
Maybe it’s time for the return of curated lists. Back in the day (even before the web) there used to be people who organized lists of videos to rent, books to read, etc. why not bring it back in a lemmy channel or some other trusted service. Just curated lists of specific videos.

The world could experience a year above 2°C of warming by 2029
As stupid as this sounds I think we (and really the media, but we know which side they’re on) should be doing this in F for US audiences. Saying “hey, it’s now 5°F hotter than it was in the 1970s” is more immediately meaningful — and the bigger number looks scarier too.

I like to imagine there’s a Church of GPLv3 in this universe where the fundamentalist copyleft zealots pray to a warhammer-style forever-preserved skeleton of RMS.

What's a little thing you've noticed recently?
There are suddenly a lot of those little lending libraries in my neighborhood again. I feel like they were a big thing maybe 10-15 years ago and then fell by the wayside. In the last year I’ve noted 4 or 5 new ones, well stocked, and on one occasion saw someone put a book in and take another out. Just simple, well-mannered neighborliness.

Refrigerators have DRM on them, To force you to buy $50 water filters or it won't dispense water
I discovered this when I put a reverse osmosis system in and wanted to bypass the filter. I needed a $50 plastic plug with an RFID tag in it or else the fridge refused to dispense.
