The true luxury is having both of those as options to choose from.

I too fantasize at home about me fantasizing about being home while being at a party

For some reason I see him as retired, missing his old gang at work having some kind of party where he fantasized about retirement.

I'm thinking his problem is he just doesn't like standing around drinking as a social activity. Change that to a board game and the social battery won't drain so fast.

And then people take ages with their turns and are distracted by their smartphones or smalltalk instead of actually playing. That's even worse.

smalltalk

A lot of people play boardgames specifically to hang with friends. I just gently ask who's turn it is if things get out of hand.

it might shock you to learn that there are 8 billion people on this planet, you can find people who will actually play the board games and it's not even difficult. for example: go to literally any game shop with tables. everyone there will focus on the game.

It might shock you to learn that to assume make an ass out of u and me :)

I've literally been hosting and joining game nights that were deliberately advertised with the board game as the focus and discouraged smalltalk style socialization and limited phone use.

There are 8 billion people in the world (7.997 billion who are not even remotely close to where I live, so that number is moot anyway), and I might just have been unlucky. But the point still stands.

Or maybe they have ADHD?

I dunno' about them, but that's why I cannot do board/card games most of the time. Due to no fault of the game or (usually) other players, most are so painfully boring to me that I'm pretty much trying to lose so I can escape to something more engaging after ~20 minutes.

Or if not really social, changing to some outdoors activity, like running or hiking

4

Agreed my main point was just an actively of some kind boardgames are just my go to. Drinking being the main focus is just so off putting to me. Make it worse when they are work people so they just complain about work.

Fear of missing joy of missing out, aka FOMJOMO?

I like his choice of cocktail: layered screwdriver with blue curaçao on top. It's called the Слава Україні

This is why divorced dads suddenly find themselves with zero friends because everyone they know is from work or their wife's social circle.

I assume work friends here means coworkers you get along with at work, not life-friends you met there.

This is me mentally preparing for all them company outings and "morale boosters". Dread it every year.

3

For a time, yes.

But after a certain point, when you've crossed enough experiences you want off your bucket list, you have a better understanding of what works best for you. I am personally a JOMO type, and while I do get a twinge of 'what about' thinking occasionally when I see a couple walking together, or a group of people out together, it only lasts a few seconds because I know damn well I'm happier alone.

nah, socializing is always better. y'all (and redditors) are just miserable and lonely.

Or, possibly, we’re all that little bit older? Twenty five years of partying and going wherever I wanted was amazing… but I like chilling in the house now.

2

There needs to be a balance. Always "socialising" isn't healthy either.

11

Socializing is better 10% of the time, and only if it is the fun kind.
