Happy Labour Day to people who are not landlords.

All the landlords I know have more than 1 job. My boss is the landlord of 7 rental properties. He also owns a local breakfast diner and his ass is there every Sunday on that grill flipping eggs and bacon with his employees. He also owns a private security business. If one of the guards calls out sick. Its him that covers their shift. And he pays himself for those hours at the same wage he pays the employee hes covering.

My uncle. Owns 2 rental properties. He also runs an electronics recycling business where he loads and hauls E-Waste and he does that and all the manual labor of it by himself.

My old landlord. Young guy about 30. Boughtkmy building from the previous slumlord owner during the pandemic. Dropped 25k putting brand new stairs and decks on the building for safety. During a time where the average going rate on the market for a 1 bedroom apartment was 1100$ he chose to leave all of our rents at 700$ a month because he didn't feel right about screwing people.

I am not a landlord. I have no desire to be a landlord. But not every landlord is a lazy sack of shit.

YouTube and Reddit are sued for allegedly enabling the racist mass shooting in Buffalo that left 10 dead

I mean lookingbat the details for the basis of the suit. They think they can sue someone for teaching a criminal how to do something. They think they can sue the makers of body armor for selling a guy who was not a criminal at the time of purchase, an unregulated commercial product. They think they can sue YouTube for providing motive for whatever he did.

In the law world theres a word for this. Its called a shakedown. This is grieving family's who are vindictive. They dont care who pays, but somebody has to pay in their eyes. Sadly on the merits this case will die in court pretty fast and nobody is gonna see a dollar unless alphabet and spez's lawyers decide they are feeling charitable. Which they won't because settling would cause implications of guilt in the public eye.

So much for that dream.

This actually isnt a terrible strategy. Right now the news sites require profit for survival. Leading them to do well frankly... Whatever it takes to make that happen. Which leads us to the road we are on now. If their survival was subsidized and they were simply paid to provide the service of good journalism. This would be beneficial as journalism at its core is a PUBLIC service. That is currently being sold as a commercial commodity.

Netflix: Piracy is Difficult to Compete Against and Growing Rapidly

Its ironic. On a decentralized platform we are discussing how a big issue with streaming services is that they are not centralized ^-^

I dont even disagree with you. I just think its interesting that we dont apply the ideological standard of centralization and monopoly being inherently bad evenly across the board.

Im not really sure I have a greater point to make here. I'm not trying to knock or dissent what your saying at all.

Just a stoned observation.

Man Self-Immolates Outside Boston Israeli Consulate in Protest of Gaza Genocide

Illegal annexation of the west bank ruled by the UN to be illegal under international law. From a military analysis. The ordinance levels being used in Gaza and the specific targets ie hospitals and schools is a violation of the Geneva convention. No state actor may commit a war crime in response to the war crime of another party. Thats not how international law works so I dont want to hear of this "but hamas did this" nonsense. It is Israels responsibility to figure out how to end this and retrieve its hostages without committing war crimes or violating international law. It has been a miserable failure at every turn in doing so.

We do not live in a pre world war 2 political order anymore. As it stands Israels founding as a nation was dubious in its legitimacy as it stands and is along with the balfort declaration, one of the last vestiges of the treaty of Versailles. Which was a complete and utter disaster for the entire world.

Under international law, a people under occupation by a foreign government have the right to armed resistance against their occupiers and the occupiers have no right to self defense under international law. The UN has ruled that israel IS engaged in an occupation in both Gaza and the west bank.
