US to order 500,000 citizens of four countries to leave
Damn they're really going after Cubans even though they tend to swing really conservative. They really are just letting the rascism get before political strategy.

Cuomo's SuperPAC is getting desperate
Reply in thread
Actually there are more polls coming out that have Mamdani ahead now, still extremely close but I wouldn't call it a guaranteed win for Cuomo. Especially since we're just starting to see the ripple effects from the Mayoral debate and AOC's endorsement.

Israel Sends Propaganda Kids to Confront Gaza-Bound Aid Ship “Madeleine” at Sea
The Israeli Shayetet 13 naval commandos are standing by to intercept the ship approximately 250 nautical miles (460 km) from Gaza. Israel fears that any live footage of the operation aired globally could damage its international reputation. Upholding its naval blockade, Israel is coordinating to ensure world coverage is minimized.
Yeah no duh going after a humanitarian mission will make you look bad. Can't wait to see the media either not cover it or spin it as these people supporting Hamas or Israel having the right to impose a blockade like this.

Portland, Oregon faces a huge housing crisis. To avoid people becoming homeless, authorities recently allowed small apartment buildings. Look at how some folks are reacting
Reply in thread
I mean Portland is pretty walkable, I live outside the city but still in the Metro area and whenever I head into the city I take public transit/walk everywhere. There definitely is still room for improvement but it's definitely pretty walkable depending on the part you're in, especially compared to the suburbs.

For Trump, This Is a Dress Rehearsal | Ordering the National Guard to deploy in Los Angeles is a warning of what to expect when his hold on power is threatened.

I think the problem though is neither side is going to back down which means clashes between troops/police is going to keep escalating until someone at one of these events pushes things too far and the troops/police end up firing on people. Especially as they are most likely going to start trying to push to end the protests through arrests rather then just focusing on control which will just antagonize people more. Realistically what other end scenario is there to this if Trump keeps throwing gasoline on the fire? It's either gonna be a brutal crackdown on the protests with "less then lethal" weapons done by the military or end up being a bloodbath. Either way both outcomes would be horrifying to see happening in America, dictators use the military to put down protests and if we let that happen without any kind of severe backlash then we're pretty much fucked.

Gotta love Dems trying to be bipartisan on stuff like this, meanwhile now that Trump is in power he's denying grants to counties and cities unless they follow his anti dei executive orders.

I mean it's usually the power utility telling you to do that and they're the ones making deals with the data centers so I think the criticism is fairly directed.

I think especially in New York going after landlords, both housing and commercial, would do a great job at making it so smaller businesses (which New York has a ton of) don't have to raise prices and to make it so the minimum wage doesn't have to be as high. That's why I think his rent freeze policy and whatever else he is going to do against land lords will help a lot.

Cuomo's SuperPAC is getting desperate
Reply in thread
Yeah that's fair, I think the main thing you can hope for is that a lot of Cuomo's support comes just from people who pick him just because they recognize him, which means they're probably not high propensity voters. Meanwhile a lot of Mamdani's support is grassroots which means hopefully a lot of his supporters are high propensity voters.

There's a difference between reasonable compromise and compromising with fascists who want to kill people. You cant deal with or compromise with them, especially since they will never work to compromise with you when they're in power. And atleast so far it feels like the current democratic party tried to move right during the election to compromise with these people rather then standing firm on certain principles like protecting migrants. People like Bernie dont win because the corporate interests and the establishment of the party will throw everything against them to stop them from winning. There's a reason one of the most popular things in America is a progressive ballot measures, even in red states.

Bernie Sanders says that if AI makes us so productive, we should get a 4-day work week
Reply in thread
I think the argument would be that the productivity gains that have happened since the 5 day work week was implemented means that if we want that same level of productivity then a 3 day work week would get that. It would be less productive then currently but the argument would be that a lot of that productivity is just going towards the profits of the companies through having to hire less people. Instead if you wanted to maintain current productivity with a 3 day work week you'd have to hire more people which is good with the amount of wealth transfer and inequality that's been happening.
Edit: not to mention how bad the job market has been recently as well.

These people have to be people living out in the suburbs of Portland. Out there sure you need a car but if you're in Portland proper most places have good transit access and are fairly walkable. I say this as someone who lives outside Portland proper but still in the Metro area who drives/bikes out here but when going into the city I generally take transit and walk.

The problem is the US isn't setup for third parties to really work, all this is going to do is most likely be a spoiler vote from Republicans and give more wins to Democrats. Maybe if they're lucky they'll win a few seats in uncompetitive districts.

California Highway Patrol has been at these protests doing crowd control so if those are under the governor it would be nice if he used those to help protestors or better yet sent them home.

I feel like I also saw them just clearing out people on the street at night, although it's hard to tell with all the different kinds of police there. I also remember CHP being involved with the clearing out of protestors back when the UCLA encampment was happening. So they can definitely be involved with other things so it would be nice to see the governor back his words up with action from any law enforcement he has control over.

The problem comes when those technological innovations increase productivity which companies use solely to increase their bottom line. These innovations should be benefitting workers directly.
Outside of that a lot of your argument rests on the idea that there will always be new better jobs for humans to move into. However even the examples you gave aren't great. How is someone doing manufacturing or transportation or extinguishing the street lights going to suddenly become a computer programmer? Especially considering how atleast in the US you'd have to pay to go to college to do that. And even then we've started to see in recent years a lot of these new "high demand" jobs getting saturated. As time goes on and companies use productivity gains to purely to benefit their profits they're gonna lay off more people and new jobs from new technologies aren't going to be able to keep up.
