How the web became unreadable

It reminds me when Jaron Lanier said in today's world, anytime two people come together on the Internet, that arrangement is financed by a third party, that believes he can manipulate the first two. I really miss the good old days when the Internet was still a dirt road you could meet fellow travelers on, and have fun exploring it.

Reddit has permanently suspended my account for supporting Lemmy.

If you really believe that you were banned for promoting Lemmy then you should mention this in your appeal but as others have mentioned it seems like the issue was spam.

And that's precisely why the issue is going to be 'spam', even when it isn't. Because if you can't get away with stating the real reason the ban went into effect, you're going to do it under the auspice of something that has a degree of plausible deniability. I'm far less willing to give Reddit the charitable benefit of the doubt on this, seeing the shear amount of ridiculous bans that have been given out to people. But who knows, it's entirely possible it could've been spam.

Major Reddit communities will go dark to protest threat to third-party apps

100% with that. In fact I was listening to the Darknet Diaries ('highly' recommend their show/podcast if you're a techie) episode with Samy Kamkar from back in the day (1, 2), and he echoed the same sentiment. A lot of his exploits he's done, he's tried taking to the vendors only to have them make legal threats against him for his actions. So the next best thing was... you guessed it... essentially doing a controlled release of it into the wild.

China tightens access to Tiananmen Square while 32 are detained in Hong Kong

One thing western liberals will never understand is that once you branch out into the world, and really have the opportunity to live and experience the customs of difference societies, you'll quickly realize that different countries have 'vastly' different ideas about what they believe their relationship to the government should be.

I'll never forget the British chick on some UK television program, that was stumped by an ISIS sympathizer in the UK when she asked him "what happens to most people who don't want to obey the law in your country?," and he replied back, "what happens to most people who don't want to obey the law of Britain? 'They get arrested'." She froze on the panel and got dead silent, before pivoting to something else.
