How can progressive "European patriots" protect Europe from the right-populists who want to destroy Europe as we know it?

Fix wealth inequality. Rich people accumulate so much money that there's hardly any left for average people. Rich people hoard assets like houses and increase their prices and the cost of living. As long as we don't fix this, things will get worse. As long as politicians don't fix this other parties will get more popular no matter what they offer.

Migrants are just scapegoats. They have no lobby, they are easy to blame. They are one piece in a bigger equation. They are used as a ruse to distract from bigger problems. If the housing market was functional it could handle the influx of Ukranian refugees and the way smaller number of refugees from countries like Afghanistan or regions like Africa.

If countries had funds from wealth and inheritance taxes they could fund a working administration, faster justice systems, working infrastructure and so on. It would be absolutely beautiful and I cannot say why there isn't a bigger movement for that solution.

It's not about taxing 100.000€ in stock, or you inheriting your mum's cottage, but about taxing people who have been living off intergenerational wealth for decades without ever working at all.

Unternehmer in Politshows

Is Google about to destroy the web?

Unpopular opinion: The missing business model for websites is killing the web. If there was a platform that would distribute a monthly fee to the websites we visit, the web would be much better.

50% could be allocated through traffic, 50% by choice. I could pay 20€ a month for example. Some would go to lemmy, some to my local newspaper, some to my favorite YouTube channels, authors or bloggers.

If enough people did this, investigative journalism would be funded, product testers wouldn't be reliant on sponsoring and hobbyists could gain serious funding without selling out.

Making your bed is, at best, a performative waste of time...

Back in the days, mattresses were made of straw or other natural materials. Blankets and pillows were stuffed with feathers until recently. And people were not able to heat their bedrooms sufficiently during winter. Back in those days, you had to make your bed in order to air it and dry it from sweat. Otherwise it would start to get moldy really quickly.

Today, synthetic materials and central heating / air conditioning have eliminated the need for a strict humidity management in the bedroom. But it's still stuck in people's heads that making your bed is absolutely vital. I guess it'll take another one or two generations for it to become irrelevant.

We need to stop pretending AI is intelligent

You're drawing wrong conclusions. Intelligent beings have concepts to validate knowledge. When converting days to seconds, we have a formula that we apply. An LLM just guesses and has no way to verify it. And it's like that for everything.

An example: Perplexity tells me that 9876543210 Seconds are 114,305.12 days. A calculator tells me it's 114,311.84. Perplexity even tells me how to calculate it, but it does neither have the ability to calculate or to verify it.

Same goes for everything. It guesses without being able to grasp the underlying concepts.

Norway’s Electric Vehicle Boom: 97% Of New Cars In April Are EVs, Tesla Model Y Leads The Charge

One aspect I hate about this is that it's so hard to find long term reviews. Brands change a tiny thing on their product and it's a new model number.

A different inverter, motor, display, HDMI input configuration and it goes from FM344-02 DX to FM345-SL-Plus.

When shopping for a new washing machine, TV oder whatever consumer product you can imagine you only find reviews from either influencers that get paid by the manufacturer or it's an Amazon review from someone who just unpacked it, tells me about the delivery process and how the first three days have been.

I want a single mother of triplets tell me if the washing machine made it through the diaper years. I want the retired soap opera addict to tell me how the TV performs after 20 seasons of Dallas or whatever grannies binge these days.

Das Zeitalter der Paywalls

Reply in thread

New Refrigerators, Washing Machines, Furniture and Tires Will All Have to Last Longer, Europe Mandates

My first Led for a regular lamp at home was an Osram for nearly 20€. It died after ca. 3 years. After that Ikea had launched their cheap LEDs and I started buying them. I can't really say how long each of them lasted, but I moved and started reusing them in different lamps. I guess most of them are over 5 years old by now. Every now and then one of them dies but my subjective feelings is that they offer great value.
