1. You pay money
2. The buttons on your screen say "buy" "purchase" "check-out" or something else to that effect

That feels like buying media, so according to the common "consumer" (hate that word) brain, you are spending money to buy content.

At the same time, media corps have been trying to teach us for years that piracy is exactly the same as stealing.

The whole point of the shorthand is to explain that these are not facts, they're misconceptions, AND both of these misconceptions exist for the same reason, corporate propaganda.

As the former VP of Community at Discourse (GPLv2) I spent half a decade participating in the making of certifiably Free, Open Source Software that got put to use by literal nazis to amplify their organized hate, and all we had to say for ourselves was "well, the license says free for everyone".

The only complication is keeping sure your cloud copy is up to date, or your machines are all kept in sync without conflict with something like syncthing. I actually really like the ways you can tweak KeepassXC.
