The older I get the more I give up on speeding. After doing the math I realized a long time ago that it rarely saved me any actual time, and moreso just gave me the illusion of making up time by cutting ahead and being the line leader. At most it was a minute, usually less. The only time speeding has ever actually saved me time is over long distances, and it's a tradeoff with higher fuel consumption. Shit costs too much these days, I'll putt along at the limit and save a few dollars while just leaving on time (or accepting being a little late).

I've done this. I was working for scraps out of college as a community reporter when an ostensibly conservative online news organization offered me an 80% pay raise and the opportunity to do most of my work from home. I was young, recently married and wanted to start a family, and we needed the money. The bigger salary was nice, but over the course of two years I spiraled into a deep depression and began to loath myself and what I did. It was so bad I began looking for a way out after the first six months. Eventually I got out (took a pay cut to do so) but am now in a much better place personally and professionally. I would never do anything like that ever again.

When I was an undergrad my professors put a big emphasis on developing a portfolio of work and picking up experience where we could before graduation. For me that meant freelancing a few times a month while working a part time job along with class. Internships are great, but everyone had to have one to graduate from my program. A degree will set you up, but a portfolio of work and related experience will help set you apart.

My issue is that I have no reason to think AI will be used to improve my life. All I see is a tool that will rip, rend and tear through the tenuous social fabric we're trying to collectively hold on to.
