The Supreme Court decides not to disenfranchise thousands of swing state voters

The opposite headline would have been more true. This ruling DOES disenfranchise those very same voters for state and local elections.

They won't get to vote on little things like who draws the voting districts, who runs the elections, who certifies (or refuses to certify) the elections. Same for who decides on school book bans, policing priorities, medicaid expansion, or mask bans.

This may be a smaller loss than expected, but painting it as a win is disingenuous.

DOJ: Ex-IRS employee who leaked Trump's tax returns intentionally got job to disclose records

Reply in thread

Silly as it sounds, this is exactly how to support him. That and writing letters. It means so much to incarcerated folks to have the few things from commissary that make life just a little less miserable, and what to spend it on is a bit of choice and independence in a system designed to take every bit of those things away as a means of grinding inmates down.

Letters are just as important - a lifeline to the outside. Sometimes literally. Guards know who is in regular contact with people outside, and who doesn't have anyone to report abuse to. Being able to communicate things like unmet medical needs so someone can set up a call campaign can be life or death.

I'm only surprised the cops aren't pushing their usual line:

Police Spokesman: The suspect in this police involved shooting was no angel. Confidential informants have talked about how often her mother was up at night, imagining what trouble her little baby might be in this time. How many times she cleaned up her messes, only to find her in the same trouble all over again. The absolute filth the suspect covered herself with under that diaper day after day ...

Reporter: But didn't an officer shoot and kill the mother also?

Police Spokesman: I can't comment on an ongoing investigation

In all seriousness, this isn't a tragedy, it's a travesty. It's a predictable and recurring outcome our society has been engineered to accept because it's easier and cheaper than changing a system that benefits those already wealthy and in power. I use this gallows humor to cope with it, with the casual brutality and racism that caused it. To live with what none of us should be able to live with. Fuck this shit.

Plan to put $1K bounty on heads of immigrants sparks fury in Missouri

From TFA (emphasis mine):

The most aggressive approach, in a bill filed by state Sen. David Gregory, would award a $1,000 bounty for tips that result in the arrest of a person present in the United States without authorization. Gregory, a Republican from Chesterfield, wants to authorize bounty hunters, usually employed by bail bond businesses to catch absconders, to track down people identified in tips.

And if the tip proves accurate, the person arrested would be charged with “trespass by an illegal alien,” and subject to life in prison without parole if federal immigration authorities declined to take custody.

I expect cruelty from these people, but the harshest sentence that exists short of death‽ Solely for being undocumented, no other offense or aggravating factors. And held in conditions civilized countries wouldn't allow for mass murderers (state and local prisons are generally much worse than federal).

I just can't even ...
