So.... what makes this server different? :)

I thought the idea with lemmy was that the instances would tend to be grouped by topic/area so it makes sense that the people running a tech instance would also be involved in creating/running the tech communities on that instance. Some are more purpose-built than others tho.

for the Reddit refugees, do you also feel a bit heartbroken?

The thing that's missing here most is the niche communities (I'm talking about like the ended 10 years ago tv shows and people are still posting about them). On the other hand, I noticed while most countries have 1 or 2 communities, my country already has at least 7 for specific locations and people still want to make more so it feels very much like home already

One 3rd party app may survive

It doesn't really matter, the NSFW filter will drive most people off. The price is fine, people in US would pay that much just for ad removal anyway but internationally, currency conversion will be harsh in some places. For CAD it isn't that bad atm.

It seems really telling that only one app is going to pay after all their hype about "partnerships".

So relieved to find this!

I'm also a bit more worried about the niche communities on reddit. If some of them don't pop up on their own then I'll start to create some.

A victory and a struggle, I stayed up too late setting up my lemmy account and have destroyed my sleep schedule but I was able to remember to put out the trash at 4am before I went to sleep.

It's hard but stick with it! I'm trying to change my meds and all the appointments suck because I go so used to a phone call for renewal once every 3 months. Especially since my doctor would just call me later if I missed the phone call.

I don't know if that's really required, there will probably be a mix of specialized and general servers when things settle down which is probably fine. And after the feature for moving communities is done, then they could be grouped or redistributed.

Salamander did the same as you https://mander.xyz/u/Sal and is listed as a mod on nearly all the communities. But I don't really know if "pre-making" a bunch of communities is great for growth cuz when I started here, I found a bunch of machine learning ones but they all seemed dead. Like I've been posting stuff in the community I started just so there's something there and people can get a feel for what it's about.
