So.... what makes this server different? :)
Title says it all!? I'm a reddit refuge and picked this instance because it's A) Canadian (I'm in MN, so consider myself an honorary Canadian), and B) The clean energy thing.
Applied to Beehaw but never heard back. Dittos on Lemmy.ML!
So hoping this is going to be a great "home" away from Reddit for the foreseeable future.
Cheers, and well done on the instance, admins!

I have no way to prove this story since I burned my reddit account, but I might as well share: when I was checking out lemmy for the first time I got both a beehaw and a lemmy.ml account(both were a pain to wet up) and both had serious reliability issues(this was right after the API announcement). I was looking on reddit to try and find more info about other instances then I found a comment chain with a couple of guys, one said he had a server, the other said he had the domain itjust.works and was looking for a subdomain. I though about it for a moment, and in a moment of sheer smartassery I suggested sh.itjust.works. not long after I saw in the comment chain that they went with my suggestion and put the server up lmao. At that point I knew they were chill, so I made an account on here as soon as I saw that it had gone up, and it's been rock solid ever since.
Edit: as @TheDude and others have pointed out, this happened here on the lemmy.ml instance, not reddit. It seems my memory is at fault lmao. I'm going to keep the rest of this comment unedited because its a good story anyways, but yea, I was wrong about where it happened. I'm glad I was wrong tho since i t means I still have that account, lol.
Not to throw you under the bus @[email protected] but that's not exactly how I recall it going down. Everything in your story is accurate with the exception of where the conversation happened. It happened on a Lemmy instance!. The conversation started on the lemmy.ml is overloaded, use other instances instead post. If you are indeed the same user who recommended the name you definitely get a token of recognition for coming up with it!
I replied to this comment with my alt and edited my original comment in that conversation but I don't think lemmy.ml is working/federating correctly or something, oh well fake internet points aren't that big a deal, I'm just happy to have helped, it makes this server feel more sentimental to me.
Hey look at that, its working! Now you can see I am @[email protected]
Thank you for your service o7
this
No, please, not here.
this
dammit you got me
That's how I found out about this, I remember that post. I read it on my Lemmy.ml amount and came here almost immediately
Haha i saw that! But was that really on Reddit? Or was it on Lemmy, don't remember ...
Hahaha this is great
I’ll chime in as a newly minted mod…. Well implemented enterprise infrastructure supported by a team of experienced infrastructure guys, mods, techies, etc.
It handles all the loads.
I had an ex like that. It's less impressive when it's unexpected
Comments like this make me feel right at home.
giggity
I cannot have such smut in my feed, provide me with her username so I can block her
Agreed. This server is just great quality. Makes me happy to be here. That + the name = magic.
Old reddit, how I've missed thee. I think I love Lemmy now. Can I join your memology 101 class?
The spirit is definitely here. I even hit 'Top Blocked Users' in the Top 10 of our security suite (out of globally 10,000 users) due to federating some porno feeds. I was like, 'Yo! I don't even know lemmy.world, must have been some federation in my feed I didn't even see. '
I basically joined because of the domainname. No waiting list was a plus. Finding out that the admins are nice and the infrastructure is top notch made me stay.
Yeah, the name is what made me register too.
Ditto, although the Canadian part was aso a nice plus.
Lemmy.ml bans you for criticizing the ccp and personally don't like beehaw because admins decided to make subs and run them.
i didn't realize that would be an issue for people. I've seen these instances more like the PHPBB forums from the days before the big services took over.
I thought the idea with lemmy was that the instances would tend to be grouped by topic/area so it makes sense that the people running a tech instance would also be involved in creating/running the tech communities on that instance. Some are more purpose-built than others tho.
mine is purpose built and I simply created the communities to match the flair we were using. Does seem like all the instances may need to make more docs on hows and whys of what they are and thier goals.
mine is pretty obv, big ol INTEGRATED AI at the top and pictures of robots!
even back then though, everyone had a shitpost lounge.
I don't know if that's really required, there will probably be a mix of specialized and general servers when things settle down which is probably fine. And after the feature for moving communities is done, then they could be grouped or redistributed.
Salamander did the same as you https://mander.xyz/u/Sal and is listed as a mod on nearly all the communities. But I don't really know if "pre-making" a bunch of communities is great for growth cuz when I started here, I found a bunch of machine learning ones but they all seemed dead. Like I've been posting stuff in the community I started just so there's something there and people can get a feel for what it's about.
For me I am not as-concerned about growth, the sub started like the old reddit subs, as a link list I was sharing as part of my own research into the topic. If we had tags or flair I would prefer it frankly.
My team and I use the list and wanted to share. Moving off reddit gave me excuse to take control of more of my internet presence and I have gobs of cheap compute so chill instances! Would be great if others wanted to participate but even on reddit it was mainly a quiet link list with a couple hundred subs.
Have to say I'm really enjoying the speed of an instance fronted with cloudflare.
True, it's feasible to be an active mod when the communities are small but you'd pretty quickly need to bring in other mods if they start growing too big. It's certainly nice to have smaller communities around for some topics but for some to function well, they do kind of need a certain amount of active users. I know there's some concern about too few servers that have all the large communities as well.
I think as more people are intrested in the project, more features will get added eventually.
? I though cloudflare disabled domain fronting?
Back before centralization I'd run communities up to 10k with less than 5 mods while doing physical events and meets (those I rounded up more help). You need more for bigger but really, if the fediverse was a bunch of smaller <10k communities power balance across the network would be better. Ideally you want a diverse network that avoids consolidation.
As for CF, thats pretty much the entire service. They now have a full zero trust setup too so you can put your entire backoffice infra in the loop if you want. I've served a number of sites in the 50k uniques range from this and simple static file servers for a number of apps including live data feeds. Had to bump to the $20 a month plan during a peak season but mostly i get by on the free stuff.
It has a funny name of course!
This was my main deciding factor.
Username checks out
Been here since almost the first day the server opened up: what makes this place different is our ruleset, admin and users.
Ruleset: Very simple and basic. @TheDude doesn't want to over-moderate, as far as I can tell. No need to tone-police or clamp down on what people can/can't say, as long as it's respectful. I really like that approach.
The admin: From his posts and the sheer rock-solid stability of this server and laid-back attitude, the dude abides. I know I'm not the only one who joined because of this post. Networking experts, server admins, devops guys, if they're anything like me, they look at that and think "Yup, this is where I wanna be".
Users: Early days yet, but so far the people here have been very laid-back, very nice, and helpful. Been trying to get all the newbies situated myself whenever I spot questions I can answer :) I'm hoping we can maintain this culture going forward.
As a dev, I joined a day before that post with much less criterion, then saw that post and felt very satisfied as you say. And they haven't let me down with the consistent updates and a very well oiled system that has handled massive growth with minimal side effects.
I also liked seeing that the networking comm was one of the early ones here. In general the local community list from a few days ago left me with a good vibe.
I admittedly checked it out because of the domain, but I've gone all in because of the awesome, friendly users like yourself. Thanks for being so welcoming!
This is the first instance that immediately accepted me when I tried to register. I tried other auto accept instances but my applications literally wouldn’t get through and I’d be stuck on the application page. Anyway, so far I find this site really neat and the loading speed is the best I’ve tried. Thank you for setting up this instance, admins. Hope the Fediverse grows.
Since you can subscribe to stuff even from other "instances"? Does it really matter which one you sign up on?
It's not like I'm Communist or Fascist so the major players should probably be in contact with each other anyways.
Well, yes and no. For instance (no pun intended), the site for your home instance is a page you’re going to be landing on a lot, so you’d want one which loads smoothly and reliably for you, and this often depends on your instance’s server infrastructure. Some larger instances are already being overloaded. Another concern is probably stability and longevity, since the fate of your account is tied to the instance that hosts it, so you’d have to choose one you trust. And the last one is moderation: you don’t want to join an instance where the admin is known for being shady and randomly banning people or blocking lots of instances. That being said, so long you choose a reliable instance it doesn’t matter too much which one it is.
You can register your username, if you wanted to keep it, on another server as a backup as well
Instances can de-federate each other so you can't see communities. Beehaw just de-federated us due to the large influx of users containing some people trolling their communities. The moderation tools are not great right now and so rather than dealing with the influx of trolls they de-federated this instance.
So you can't see Beehaw communities and their users cannot see your posts if you post on another instance's community.
This lets instances decide who they want to associate with and is a good thing for the long-term health of social media. You don't want to be a part of instances that associate with terrorist instances or other shady things, de-federation is the tool to keep that from happening.
In general, any instance is as good as any other but as time goes on there may be a few different 'islands' of instances that are functionally separate from each other and you'll either choose one or use multiple accounts to swap between them.
But I subscribed to some Beehaw communities from this account, so should I make a Beehaw account or just hold out hope that they re-federate us?
They released an update yesterday that they reached out to speak with the sh.itjust.works admin team and they're confident that they will be able to re-federate with us going forward once they're able to get some more moderation tools to handle the larger volume.
They didn't provide a timeline however. It's up to you if you want to wait for re-federation or make another account on Beehaw.
Here's the post: https://sh.itjust.works/post/147756
So far the atmosphere here seems far more cooperative and optimistic... like a certain other place circa 2008.
I'm liking it, it's a breath of fresh air and I'd forgotten that smell.
@[email protected] - Keep commercial interests / astroturfing etc. off this place like our lives depend on it!

As a Skyrim fanatic I've got a Pavlovian attraction to any joke on the theme of "It just works." Then, as a PC tinkerer, reading this confirmed that this instance is probably a good fit. Happy with the vibe so far!
Yo Skyrim fanatic, have you found a mod community to follow yet? Curious where r/skyrimmod is migrating to
bam
Nice. Thank you
I liked the domain. It makes me smile.
Easy to remember url, haven’t had a single issue with acces or content. Not Canadian but I appreciate the general vibe of the people from the country that I’ve interacted and worked with. Great experience so far!
The name and the fact that it does just work. I registered and immediately had an account unlike some other instances.
Shit just works
Sh... 🤫 It just works!
I'm not a user on this instance, but from what I can tell, shit just kinda works over here.
I recently switched from lemmy.ml to here. It just seems to be snappy and always up when I use the site. Lemmy.ml, on the other hand, is down frequently due to the high traffic and otherwise slow to load for me.
This instance does what it says on the tin. Shit just works over here.
After 30 minutes of floundering about, I think I'm finally starting to get how lemmy works. I really hope this takes off so here I am contributing to the noise :D
The more the merrier. Content production and interaction makes a community grow and thrive! Welcome, and best wishes
Do you know how to subscribe to other communities from different instances?
I want to sub to the selfhosted community in another instance but not sure how to.
Edit: I figured it out, when viewing the list of communities, you have to select the option that says "all" instead of the "local" option.
I'm on day... 3. I just signed up for a couple more instances to try to find my y 'home'... This place seems chill..
Also here after getting impatient with beehaw and hearing... questionable things about .ml. Was a lurker on reddit but trying to be active here. Thanks for hosting, admins!
What questionable things?
Probably that the admins of that instance are tankies who support the CCP and Russia.
Tankies don't support Russia. If you're going to use the term as an insult, at least use it right.
A lot of people who are called talkies supoort Russia but if you consider talkies as "authoritarian communist who romanticized Lenin and Stalin" then someone with those beliefs would actually be anti-Putin given his disparaging comments about Soviet Communism.
If true then its ironic that they are trying to run a federated free speech platfomr
I just like the name lol. I'm from the USA.
It's that TheDude abides, man.
Well, as a french speaking person that is the only EN/FR server i found :)
As an anglophone in QC, i was drawn to the openness to embracing the french language
Bonjour, J'étudie Français.
Me too. When I saw the bilingual introduction, I was like "hell yeah count me in"
I joined because of the domain name and TheDude’s comments and straight forward explanations for things going on.
It’s also what I tell people about my homelab. “I don’t know what’s going on or how, but shit just works.”
undefined> “I don’t know what’s going on or how, but shit just works.”
you're hired
Thanks for hosting this instance. Apart from the great name and the chill environment, this is the first instance that let me sign in without issues or infinitely spinning buttons. Also it looks like this one has better server capacity compared to other instances!
I was mainly a lurker in reddit, but will try to be more active here.
I had the same experience. I almost didn't make it onto the lemmyverse - I tried lemmy.ml and beehaw, didn't get let in / tried to log in too soon after I applied, then forgot about it.
Any site with an application process is going to turn away a lot of people.
Hard agree, I started with beehaw, saw that it has an application process, and I didn't even bother.
The fact that they defederated from this instance says a lot about them too.
Exactly. I've got an account there, but i view it as basically useless now.
They're way too uptight about a lot of shit to be an open forum of discussion.
I'm on a different instance, but I figured I would just say hello to a fellow Minnesotan!
I also joined cause of the domain name. Silly just like the early 2000s internet. The admin and everyone on here seems really laid-back and cool.
The name was funny and it sounds like the admin has the site running on a decently sized server. Also I saw that someone had created /c/LocalLlama, which is a machine learning sub I used to frequent back on reddit.
The description said english AND french so I hoped to discuss some french shit but as far as I can tell there is no french discussion, for now.
Je parle in petit peu haha
on a créé [email protected], alors tu peux rejoindre si tu veux :)
Merci beaucoup!
Same. Maybe we should create some French-speaking communities?
Creating means modding I guess, and I wouldn't be sufficiently available to do that, as I am also trying kbin/social and squabbles to see what sticks.
Little word about squabbles: centralized and closed source. The day the dev decides bye it's bye, and the day the dev does something dumb, that's it. Not federated, and ultimately nothing you can do except organize another partial exodus. At least with federated it's much easier to have people just make a new account elsewhere, re-sub to their favorite communities and continue as if nothing had happened, losing only a bit of comment history. If you want long term reliability I think this is it. At least I worry about that somewhat more than whether the UI winks at me with its cute charm.
OK, je me suis inscrit
There's a few more francophones in this thread
https://sh.itjust.works/comment/88832
I suspect we need to create a community (although there may already be one we should join, I dunno, I've been here 30seconds)
the server's been alive for less than a week, just make your own communities if you don't find them in the search bar :D you can find existing communities on https://sh.itjust.works/communities
That doesn't show all of them. Better to check on the community browser.
I personally use this one: https://lemmy.directory/communities
more compact
It has the right ratio of tankies to downvote buttons
Came here specifically because it blocks lemmygrad...
Started out on lemmy.world, but the server was slow and laggy. When I saw a comment by someone from sh.itjust.works, I knew I had to pack my bags and move here. No regrets.
The clean energy was the deciding factor for me, since virtually everything's accessible from any instance. There were some bumps around some communities not being found - I assume from rapid growth caused by the reddit exodus - but things are working smoothly now.
My past lemmy instance block downvoting and start filling their instances with stuff that are banned in my country. Also I didn't realise that instance blocks downvoting, which actually a feature that I prefer to have.
I like Canada even if I'm not from it. Plus it seems like a nice quiet place to call a Lemmy home and figure this whole thing out without being overwhelmed. Like, peer into the All and go "whoa man" then just hit Local and chill for a bit.
Great domain, site is responsive (after I tried couple others)
Lemmy.ml and other popular instances wouldn't let me sign up. The button kept spinning and spinning. I tried for hours to get in those instances, got frustrated and was about to give up on this whole lemmy thing. Then i tried with this instance within a second of hitting sign up button i was in. No weird indefinite spinning animation.
It's because too many people are going to those instances and overloading them.
Similar experience tbh. Tried lemmy.world, slow + approval process required. Tried here. Immediately in and lightning fast. Best server.
Hey those are the reasons I signed up. It's less canada-centric than lemmy.ca. Beeshaw and lemmy.ml are at high capacity rn, it's important to spread new users over multiple servers so welcome!
I could actually sign up lol
Already registered somewhere else, but just had to join this one for the cool domain name.
Lmao love the username
I've been using this instance for the last few days, and (sh)it just works without hassle!
Also a Reddit refuge. Just deleted a 6 year old account and all its content. It was a bit bittersweet but alas, it was time to move on with all that's happened. Also applied to Beehaw and Lemmy.ml but can imagine it might be a bit swamped as didn't hear back, so here I am. Glad to be here.
My requests didn't even get through. I applied here and it went right away so here I am.
I got a Lemmy.ml account approved, but actually loading anything on that instance was damaging my calm. You are not missing anything. Sh.itjust.works has been smooth, friendly, and just works.
Ya. It has been rather painless to use. How more people migrate so there is enough activity. Hopefully finding new communities will also become easier.
My account is going on 9 years. I'm not ready to kiss it good bye.
Mine was twelve. If I'm honest, I was unhappy with reddit's direction for at least a solid nine of those, but killing Sync was the last straw. Nuked my account yesterday and don't have any regrets.
Nice. So far I love Lemmy.
The name and logo makes me feel right at home personally.
I signed up here because of the clean energy thing and because the rules seemed chill enough
Nice Celeste pfp. Can't wait for their new game Earthblade
Wait, new game? I have to check this out
Because there's r/NCD refugees here in sufficient numbers
There's dozens of us!
What’s r/NCD?
NonCredibleDefense
What exactly is it? I've seen it on reddit and it seems to have something to do with Ukraine,
Basically pro-west weebs that shitpost on military topics. It was a great subreddit.
I honestly don't know, I just saw what I assumed were shitposts on my homepage
Is there any new ncd community here.
I miss ERA a lot after leaving reddit
I was so happy when I saw that community get started here. Elite memers
IDK I joined this and kbin thinking I had to join multiple. Still not entirely sure what I'm doing
You only really have to join one Lemmy server that's closest to you or that is more in line with your views. After that, all servers basically synch together to display the content of all the communities of all the servers they are connected with. Unless the particular server you are logged into decides to block any other servers which means their content won't be synchronized and displayed. And if you want to see the content of the blocked servers, then you have to create an account on that specific one and log into it.
Best instance name so far, hands down. I'm a sucker for clever names.
Sh.itjust.works
It just works my dude
It Just Works!
I was just able to sign up. No loading button or waiting list.
"this instance" :) I see you're on sh.itjust.works. I'm currently posting from fedia.io. Theoretically all the "fediverse" instances should interact with one another.
Well, this is the sh.itjust.works Main Community so it's kinda natural to expect people following it to have their account here.
The more the merrier though, by all means come around whenever. How's the server over at fedia.io holding up?
FYI to my fellow sh.itters I needed to select the language as English in order to reply to this comment.
Renewable energy seemed good.
I joined because the rego page for lemmy.world wouldn't work, overloaded?
me
name and logo tbh
Whère èlse are you goïngue tou spique tou différente langüadgize ine ze sème plaïce?
The icon of the happy lemming does it for me.
I appreciate the 'Honorary Canadian' bit, too... I used to live in Duluth and have said the same myself!
Ooo^oooo^h Jeez. I went to college in the sin cities and have been up to the boundary waters... I'd say you are one for sure!^___^
MN here too... enjoying Lemmy thus far
Same as you beehaw was going to be my first choice but I couldn't get an account even after I read their docs and wrote what I thought was an essay. I like the tongue in cheek name and that they have open registration. I am also hopeful this will be my reddit replacement but I think it's too early to say for sure. Seems to be a chill community so far.
I chose this one because it had open registrations. lemmy.world and .ml were my first choices simply due to size.
frech help
IDK the seal icon got me :)
