In Canada, generally nobody blinks because we don't have a slave wage for tipped workers (Québec has a tipped wage but it is only 3CAD less than minimum hourly wage).

As I read it, the US Supreme Court basically told the Trump admin they can finish forming the rule they want to use with the USPS to put restrictions on mail-in ballots, then states can sue for harm, whereas at the point the states were suing and the injunction given the final rule wasn't ready yet. The USPS finished that Aug 21, 3 days ago, and will officially publish it Aug 26, two days from writing.

However the same judge in Boston separately prevented any new rule coming into effect for the Nov 2026 elections, so that needs to be overturned. Additionally, after Aug 26, the states can sue again probably and obtain an injunction on the published final rule, to keep the plan being implemented even if the "no new rules before November" injunction is defeated.

(My editorialization) So the Supremely Corrupt Six are wasting federal and states' and the court system's money and time just to go out of their way to give the Trump admin small favours.

How imminent is your problem?

I'm only familiar with big cities like Toronto and Vancouver. Far as I have heard essentially you can generally find overnight shelters, but you may be kicked out during the day.

Toronto's central intake line is 1-877-338-3398, or local number 416-338-4766, they should triage your situation and determine if they can provide you emergency or transitional shelter.

Based on their site, Toronto's Room-based shelter is at 100% occupancy, Bed-based shelter is at 92%.

The main thing is keeping yourself busy and clean during the day, be it at the library, parks, gym, employment and homeless support centres or elsewhere.

I know liking anything about AI is unpopular here. I agree with the thought that everything Meta, Anthropic and OpenAI are doing currently are a gargantuan waste of other people's money, resources and time. Ai Data centres have no real future and if anything tools of fasicsm and surveillance capitalism IMO. Honestly I will continue not to touch frontier models for coding tasks or anything serious.

However as a free-and-open-source enthusiast, I do see some long-term value in an open stack for AI. Qwen has me quite intrigued. It may be able to teach me things and help me put together useful code I can review in detail.

Everyone planning to vote in their municipal election, bear in mind that the process tends to be a little harder in municipal elections than federal and provincial elections if you can't vote on the day at your designated voting location. In my experience there tended to be fewer advance voting days, more limited access to a mail in ballot, restrictions like you could only vote in your own ward, or a more arduous process to assign a proxy. You also want to check your eligibility, as in some instances you may be able to vote in one or more municipalities, even if you weren't eligible to vote in the provincial and federal elections. So when the elections come around, don't just assume you can do whatever, read the election administration materials so you know how to ensure you'll get your vote in before any deadlines.
