I genuinely feel like I’m going insane when the Dems haven’t made a “we’ll impeach Trump if elected” promise. Not that I’d believe them, but it seems like that should be a talking point.

10

He's not the target any more because it's been proven that he is completely immune politically and legally. They should do what they never did which is to go after all the co-conspirators first starting with the lowest then keep flipping them until you have everyone. If you eventually get the Don before the clock runs out, that's a bonus.

7

Might be a strategy to capture some disgruntled MAGA folks, and not make them rally for their führer

4

He should be imprisoned for many reasons, but the cutting off Starshield/Starlink to Ukraine to keep its defensive drones from intercepting Russian jet drones should see him in front of a firing squad.

10

If I recall correctly, he came tp the US as an alien and worked illegally originally. Sounds like a reason for stripping citizenship and deportation.

Just win the damn elections first and worry about that after. This is basic football, catch the ball first, THEN run. Planning before execution leads to incomplete passes, or interceptions.

9
jj4211reply
lemmy.world

But at least they have to tell the voters roughly what they want to do so the voters know what they are actually voting for. So 'just win the damn elections' should include some indication of their priorities.

12

It's a trap though. Lots of people criticize candidates for being only anti-Whatever and not caring about local citizens or having a plan for local issues.

Although throwing MAGA in jail is the most important thing to help local citizens and issues, IMO.

3

Absolutely, on policy that's important. But announcing investigations before your capable of doing so is likely to just make him throw in another $300 million to keep that from happening.

0

I mean...you should also have a plan on what to do when you have the ball, right? Or is every time you catch a football, it's your first time thinking about what you're gonna do next?

“Hey guys, I’m not going to tell you what I plan to do with power once I get it because Shartgargle says it’s the best option. Vote for me, though.”

It’s called having a platform. Saying what you’re gunna do if you win is the whole point of campaigning.

2
piefed.ca

Bullshit. They’ll capitulate as they always do. Their only use is to unseat the fascist. Once that is done. We can work to unseat them, and then put someone in the Shite House that will actually do the work.

11

And then election time will come and we'll get another republican president.

5

I feel like I could bet on Musk paying to kill any investigation brought up by the Dems should they win.

1

All that doge shit was extremely illegal and everyone involved should be tried

11

No. Hang him. What more evidence do you need of his immense traitorous harm to America and the working class around the world that would require investigation? You'll lethally inject one person for egregious crimes against one other person, but you'll dither and fret over bringing meaningful consequence to set an example when it's someone who has directly harmed millions worldwide and condemned an entire generation to immeasureable struggle and unprecedented crises. It's vile and pathetic. At this point investigation is a very clear delay and distract tactic, and we all know why this is the best the good cop half of this corporate capital party has to offer.

28

They should literally be running on this.

We know what immigrants are stealing citizens jobs. Or mooching off the system. It's him.

16
lemmy.world

Musk helped get us out of the habit of asking. By the time we reimplement that feature, it may be too late for his particular case. Also, it doesn't need to be a country where he's from or has any ties and if there are people there who want to kill him, that's hardly our problem. Totally unrelated, but what's that uncontacted island where all those missionaries keep dying?

15

Send him to Epstein Island where he has many fond memories, and then nuke it

9

Ah hell nah they do not want that Orenia loving Afrikaans shitheel back

3

He also fraudulently overstayed his student visa while working before naturalizing.

Way worse than anything Omar’s dad did.

3

He would cry 'witch hunt', but at this point who would even back him? The suckers still waiting on their vote-bribes?

7

Ha, no. It's them. They should be investigating themselves... or at least Republicans.

This? They will piss away a fortune and achieve nothing.

Revoke his citizenship, nationalize his shit, throw him in prison for a while, and then deport his ass.

14

Why are they so obsessed with investigations but never the other parts of the process, like arrests, bringing charges, trials, and sentencing?

29

To do any of those subsequent steps, you have to have something legal experts call "an actual case."

It's hard when your investigations are based on Internet conspiracy theories and sovereign citizen levels of bullshit.

Yeup. It should be clear still that this is not a reason not to vote D in midterms though.

And it should be noted how the Trump prosecution case stopped when he became president. So it's not at all unimportant who wields the power when it comes to these court cases.

Of all things to 'both sides' this is stupid. One group is actually following due process, the other is literally ignoring due process and intercepting any attempt to reign in corruption.

And none of that 'controlled opposition' patter, due process was moving forward until Trump was re-elected and every bit of opposition was summarily dismantled and dismissed.

2
Mulligrubsreply

One group is actually following due process

Womp womp, that's the joke.

due process was moving forward until Trump was re-elected

They collectively dragged their ass for four years. An obscenity.

Not to mention, Harris took a knee in the last election (why is a mystery but I bet it was $$$).

You know they generally don't advertise for Republican votes in Presidential campaigns, don't you? Harris did ("he doesn't have to know how you voted", unprecedented R outreach). Everybody knows that you need independent votes to win, it's basic math.

I've voted, and you should too. But know the game, don't fall for the dog-and-pony show, that's the patter. You are repeating the D party line, and you can't get more patter than that, friend.

0

The fact is, one party has an active and stated goal of stripping the US for parts and the people of their rights. The other is headed up by milque toast corpo stooges. I shouldn't have to write a manifesto detailing the ills and failures of both parties to point out that basic but distinct difference in approaches. Dems are political mercenaries at best, Repubs actively campaign on removing rights.

And I'd love to see the D Party actually run on holding people accountable. Let's not pretend that is an active campaign goal for the Dems. I'd die to hear basic patter like that from Dem leadership. 99% of the time they run to the middle like you pointed out.

2
NEZ27reply
lemmy.zip

I mean investigations are the first part of due process. I agree the rest needs to follow, but an investigation is the start of things.

We also need to quit electing people who like to scuttle investigations, destroy evidence, and stymie witnesses/victims. That is the bigger hindrance to due process.

6

investigations are the first part of due process.

That is also the only part that the legislative branch can really do. Based on what is found during investigations, they can recommend charges, but that's about it. Arrests and charges come from the executive branch. Trial and sentencing come from the judicial branch. This separation of power is a safeguard against king shit, and believe it or not, the king shit we're seeing in action is still less absolute than it could be if not for some power not yet ceded to the executive.

3

Many of those things are clearly against the law and those perpetrators need to be held accountable (in 2 years, after they can no longer pay for pardons)

1

Because you can't arrest, charge, and bring to trial people without evidence, which is what the investigation is for.

5
lemmy.ca

Just like the Dems have investigated January 6th? I'm sure the consequences will be devastating for him.

22
lemmy.today

That was the feckless Biden Administration. They fucked up royally, and got MAGA elected again. The Dems won't be making that mistake again, or they know they'll find themselves in the same hot seat as MAGA. You may not think the Dems are going to follow up, but the MAGAs certainly do. DC criminal defense lawyers are reporting that business is way up, with potential investigative targets booking their favorite attorney now.

The Dems are already making plans for the investigations. Dems know that even if they could pass legislation, the Demented Queen won't sign it, so the next 2 years are going to focus on Investigations. The plans are already in motion, witness lists are being drawn up, and subpoenas will be issued quickly.

Some people, like Musk, are going to be busy running from one Congressional investigation to another. They won't have time to get in future trouble while they are vigorously defending themselves against past trouble.

What I'm about to state is not a personal attack. We can discuss this without hatred even if we end the discussion by agreeing to disagree.

Biden had 4 years to prevent Trumps 2nd term. Biden had arguably the best intel in the world in the world working for him. He had an abundance of resources. One self sabotage (if you want to call it that) was Democrats choosing to have Kamala run against Trump last minute. Even if it wasn't last minute, Kamala is a minority and a woman which is a major disadvantage. Not to make this a race discussion but a white woman couldn't even beat Trump. I'm not trying to make this about race but we can't ignore that.

Democrats didn't mess up. They were complicit.

Democrats and the Biden Admin giving the 2024 election the old-college-try to stop Trump getting reelected wasn't a fumble. They threw the game on purpose. They were fully aware of what was at stake and the climate they were in. Democrats aren't making mistakes. They are letting changes happen and then acting appalled. A sweep in the midterms will only slow down the train but they won't stop it. They can't stop it. The system is broken and has giren significantly more broken in recent years.

Investigate?

Screw that.

Just tax the MF into oblivion, along with the rest of the rich scumbags pillaging the government and the country.

There are FAR more people that did damage that were actually in charge and supposed to be responsible to and beholden to the citizens of this country. Judges, elected officials, LEOs, military officers. Investigate and bury them.

4
lemmy.world

Things to investigate, what am I missing?:

  1. His brother's admission that they fraudulently used their student visas to start businesses, and if he didn't admit it on his naturalization application, then that's grounds for denaturalization.
  2. Election fraud related to his promises to pay for votes, and other suspicious statements.
  3. Countless privacy, data security and other laws violated at DOGE.
  4. His associations with Jeffrey Epstein.
  5. Use of his controlling power at his companies to benefit himself and defraud investors.
  6. Lies to the NHTSA and consumers about the capabilities and safety claims about Tesla cars.
  7. Illicit preferences and treatment for his companies as corrupt payment for funding the GOP electoral machine.

That's in 4 minutes off the top of my head. I'm sure there's more. Hakeem Jeffries, you can have that list for free to start with - or, hey, better yet, let's get someone else who actually will take some action to lead the House.

29

I really liked that meme comparing immigrants and asking which is under investigation:

  • the white trillionaire who publicly admitted to immigration fraud decades ago
  • the darker skin congressional candidate who has been a citizen for a longer time, since she was a teenager. Where there are no credible accusations, the paperwork would have been her parents responsibility, and they raided her house on a rubber stamp “intent to terrorize” warrant

Sure, they might try but will get ignored like last time and the evidence might vanish, might be some problem so they don't get power. But the contrarian view is that’s all they can do.

Congress has been dysfunctional for decades and the republicans have stood together against any bipartisan work. Even with a majority, there’s not much democrats can pass without a supermajority (or congressional reform).

The huge thing that has been missing has been constitutional checks and balances. I don’t know if they can do that without supermajority but they need to try

Given our dysfunctional Congress and the goal to put the brakes on abuses of power, is there anything they can do?

1
Mulligrubsreply
lemmy.world

there’s not much democrats can pass without a supermajority (or congressional reform).

Absurd.

The super majority vote is a parliamentary rule and not law. They can skip the super majority with a simple majority vote (as they can with all parliamentary rules).

They skip it all the time... they bypass the "super majority" with regularity. Over 180x the last time I checked.

They could have passed minimum wage increase with a simple majority. Instead, they tied it to a massive budget package.

They never even tried a standalone bill. They performed the bare minimum because it works, people fall for it. It's an open secret and a bit of a joke, really.

2

The filibuster rule is a parliamentary thing that could be changed/ignored, but the veto is very much unavoidable. Without 2/3rds they cannot pass a thing Trump would object to, and without 2/3rds they can't remove him.

So it was a bit of a bullshit thing when a party has house, senate, and president and still can't vote things through due to the filibuster, but at least for now the democrats are still stuck with the veto.

2

4

8
lemmy.world

That bastard will do just about anything to swing the election now

6

now

That's his whole problem...

Last minute media blitzs work against neoliberals because that's the same thing neoliberals have to resort to if they want to win elections

Otherwise their platforms and candidates can't stand up to the scrutiny.

With progressive policy/candidates, the more voters hear about them, the more popular they get.

That's why every state Dem party operating at campaign levels the last 18 months resulted in a shit ton of progressives making it to the general and winning special elections.

Republicans can't compete against that, which is the entire reason why in February of 2025 the DNC pivoted away from neoliberalism.

Absolutely no one should be surprised by what's about to happen over the next two years. But they will be because billionaire owned media will keep denying it's happening, and then try to credit neoliberals after it happens.

The Democrats can't bust the Rs on accepting piles of money and gold Krugerrands, come on now they pulled in a billion dollars to lose. If memory serves, they raised more money than Rs in last election.

The Supreme Court has decided that dollars are free speech (no matter how much) and Space X is people (no matter how stupid that is). This is performative at best in my opinion (just like Ds last 'attempt' to raise the minimum wage)

OR, Democrats will actually derail the money train and clean the White House! Ha that was a joke

1

I'm certain they'll get around to it, we'll see a strongly worded report in 24 months.

Instead, let's rescind Musk's citizenship for fraud on his application.

3

Yes. As he should be. But so many people are in the running for being on the top of that list.

Asshats like Russ Vought need to be on there, too. Sure, Musk was having idiotic teenagers with no qualifications doing their "doge" bullshit, but it's Vought behind a lot of this.

Get that motherfucker on the stand.

Same with Carr. And Hegseth. And Bondi. And Blanche....there are just so many motherfuckers that need to pay.

3

Good. That whole thing was a clusterfuck at best, and more likely sabotage and treason (I’m not just throwing that word about – he’s been working closely with Putin through all that, whether he was a collaborator or a useful idiot, and undermining US government institutions on behalf of a rival power is the definition of treason).

3
piefed.social

The potential probe will focus on Musk's massive political donations to Republicans and his past role leading President Donald Trump's Department of Government Efficiency.

I don't know that there's anything necessarily illegal about his donations? But I think in the previous election he was paying people to vote for Trump, and sending people pre-filled ballots, both of which are clearly illegal.

Representative Greg Casar raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest, questioning if Musk's donations aim to secure additional federal government contracts for SpaceX and Tesla.

This has to be the biggest problem with Musk. Although again, not sure if there was anything strictly illegal done there. If there was, it was probably on the part of Trump, who has complete immunity from prosecution for Presidential acts.

So I remain pessimistic...

3

Although again, not sure if there was anything strictly illegal done there. If there was, it was probably on the part of Trump, who has complete immunity from prosecution for Presidential acts.

Both giving and receiving bribes is illegal.

Of course, if we're talking immunity, though, Trump could decide to pardon Musk at any time, and there's nothing anybody could do about it.

3

Not that is support musk in this, but it’s legal to spend any amount of money you want for an election. What did they think would happen?

Where are the democrats standing for fixing that?

I believe there are a few superpak rules left where it has to be “independent” rather than coordinated with a party or candidate, so I’d buy an investigation into what party or candidate hired him to destroy government services under the claim that we can’t afford it (in addition to the trillions in tax cuts for the wealthy)
