Germany news: Far-right AfD loses mayoral runoffs in NRW

Reply in thread

A ton of AfD support is actually geographically split. Much of the support is in former East Germany, not in the west of the country. While their overall support has been rising steadily, this could have been a bellwether moment that showed that support rising to electoral success in the west. These results aren't a mystery, they're just not a simple as you would believe reading only headlines.

Kremlin's favorite candidate Jill Stein refuses to call Putin a war criminal during interview

Reply in thread

The problem is this: regarding Netanyahu she says "Well he is very clearly a war criminal." Regarding Putin she says "With Russia it's far more complicated" and "In so many words, yes." She's hedging out of calling Putin a war criminal directly so she can plausibly deny it. She will agree with general statements saying he could be a war criminal under those circumstances but she won't say it directly so she can go "Oh no, Hasan called him a war criminal, I didn't, I just agreed that if all of those things were true then he could be considered a war criminal!"

Speaker Johnson abandons floor agenda, sends members home early amid GOP rebellion

Reply in thread

They can oust the speaker with a very small number of defections that would achieve a majority. There's no motivation for the minority factions within the majority to do so though - the only chance they have of passing their hardline agenda is by refusing to give the majority the ability to do anything. This isn't a problem if you have a much larger majority but they're barely holding onto the title right now.

Ah yes, famously apolitical Star Trek

Reply in thread

I do have issues with the fact modern Trek when they do things like put Elon Musk into dialogue alongside Zephrym Cochran and the Wright Brothers, or when they put the Jan6 riots into a video montage about the failures of humanity. It immediately dates the show in a way that 90s trek never felt dated, and it assumes it knows how people in the future will feel about today's events. Look at how well the Musk reference has aged.

I'm not saying you can't reference current social issues and make a statement on them, I'm just saying that if you make the smallest effort to use allegory, even if it's obvious, it will age better than literally showing modern footage.

Supreme Court lets Trump administration resume deportations of immigrants to countries other than their own

Reply in thread

The most straightforward one is from Leviticus (one of the books that has a bunch of laws for the Israelites, including stuff like "don't wear mixed fabrics" and rules that evolved into kosher rules, along with stuff that's cited for "don't be gay" (though a lot of that comes from Paul's letters too)):

Lev 19:33-34 "When a foreigner resides among you in your land, do not mistreat them. The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the Lord your God."

‘Voters are fed up’: Michigan primary forces Democratic party to accept leftwing shift

“Our formula is the right formula,” From insisted. [...] "Our platform was for the 1990s, not for the 2030s, but the principles are the same.

This man thinks that his Clinton neoliberal ideas are only not selling because of communication issues. Absolutely delusional.

“The democratic socialists want a different system. They don’t want to further democratic values. You look at their platform: they want to get rid of the Senate, the presidency, the supreme court; they want ownership of business; they want to get rid of police; they don’t want to fund the military.”

A quick list of things that are undemocratic:

  • The Senate
  • The Supreme Court

Another quick list of things that are clearly broken and problematic:

  • The presidency (has he looked around lately?)
  • The police (I'm sure those protesters are just crisis actors)
  • Military spending (as if it weren't bad enough now we're staring down the barrel of a 1.5T$ defense budget??)

Oh look, all of the things that he says are bastions of democracy are either inherently undemocratic or in major need of reforms.

"That isn’t the historic Democratic party. It’s not the party of Roosevelt that saved capitalism and saved democracy in the world in World War II. It’s a different ideology, it’s a different party."

I don't want to save capitalism. It sucks to be living in this unfettered capitalist hellscape, even if it is better that like...Sudan right now. Israel is supported because it's a "bastion of democracy (read: capitalism) in the Middle East", and look what's happening because of it.
