Why do we castrate animals instead of giving them vasectomies?

I can't speak for all other animals, but I imagine it's often for similar reasons as why they do it for cats: removing the hormones means they're much less likely to display unwanted behaviors such as marking/spraying, territorial aggression (fighting) towards other cats, and roaming. Those behaviors all stem from the desire to mate, and if they don't have testosterone from the testicles, they don't experience the desire to mate. Unless you don't mind the smell of concentrated cat urine everywhere, adult male cats with testicles don't make very great house pets.

With female cats, they completely remove the ovaries (rather than doing a tubal ligation) for similar reasons. If they did a tubal ligation instead, the cat would still go into heat, meaning lots of yowling and trying to escape, and an increased risk of marking/spraying, just no longer able to get pregnant. In my region, they also usually remove the uterus, but it appears that varies globally.

Lululemon pulls new leggings line after complaints about ‘whale tail’.

Great job CNN... Didn't think to include any pictures of the actual leggings?? They're high rise, no underwear hanging out, just the seam shape and placement is similar to a "whale tail".

Stop trying to make fetch happen!

Reply in thread

The girl on the bottom left is Regina George, "Queen Bee" of the high school, and some other girls intentionally cut those holes into her shirt, trying to embarrass her / make her less "cool." The girls on the bottom right saw Regina, and intentionally cut similar holes in their tops so that they could be "cool" like her.

The title is a quote from the movie. Regina George says it to one of her closest "friends", who is trying to make "fetch" catch on as a new slang term meaning something similar to "cool" or "awesome".

Edit: It's all referencing the movie Mean Girls, specifically the one from 2004.

RIP (again)

Thanks to divorce & remarriage, I used to have 8 living people that I considered grandparents, plus a few more that I guess could've also been considered grandparents, but they were estranged and I never met them. If everyone is divorced and remarried, I think you could claim up to 16 grandparents!

Nestlé adds sugar to infant milk sold in poorer countries, report finds

Reply in thread

added sugar in the form of sucrose or honey in samples of Nido, a follow-up milk formula brand intended for use for infants aged one and above,

I hate that it sounds as if I'm defending them, but the only specific mention of honey does say it was in a product targeted at children over 1 year old. I believe the recommendation I've heard is that honey is dangerous for children under 1 year old. But fuck, if unsweetened products are good enough for infants in wealthy countries, WTF are they doing adding it to products aimed at infants in poorer countries??

Associated Press barred from Oval Office for not using ‘Gulf of America’

I know of at least one US government web page that still references "Gulf of Mexico", but I don't want to link it, because I'm very curious to see how long it can fly under the radar. I have a thing set up that checks the page regularly and will alert me whenever it changes.

Is there a way to set up archive.org or something like that to save regular snapshots without risking drawing more attention to it?
