The worst thing about it is, even if you switch to Linux for privacy yourself, you'll also need your friends to switch as well, otherwise if you message them on their desktop, they're a liability, as the damn recall will be there too, leaking your data.

It'll be hell for activists.

Alt of [email protected] chiming in, thanks for giving us the sitrep, poVoq!

This is an unusually unlucky set of circumstances, but for the Solarpunks who find their way here, let's try to make the best of it. If you don't already have an alternative account somewhere, you may want to create one to use until we're back up and running. lemmy.dbzer0.com, sopuli.xyz, or lemmy.cafe are some solid choices to consider. After that, you may want to favorite poVoq's post here so you can check back on any news.

Even without our home base, we can still share the solarpunky stuff we find and create around the threadiverse (though as Tofu mentioned, maybe this could be a time to take a breather to be refreshed when we come back 😄).

Besides, if the past is any indication, time will fly by and we'll be back before you know it!

Consider that Germany was in far more dire straits economically, and Hitler's approval was crazy high even towards the end of the war (something like 60 or 70%). So the entire time the opposition was outnumbered.

In comparison, Trump's approval is around 45%.

Firearms recommendations

You didn't mention your budget, so I'll first suggest a WWSD rifle, which is a particularly light weight AR-15. They also make a cost reduced version that's half the cost while only being a little heavier at 5.4lbs.

I suggest these for two reasons,

  1. They're genuinely excellent firearms. Well constructed, reliable, with easily replaceable commonly available parts.
  2. KE Arms is one of the few leftist gun makers in the country, who fully support LGBTQ Gun ownership. One of the people who helped design the WWSD rifle is an Anarchist who makes excellent videos on youtube (InRangeTV).

If you have a lower budget, the best option is a simple PSA AR-15. They also make a 'pistol' version that's about the same weight as the KE Arms versions, but with a shorter barrel (which would be much louder than the longer barrels, something to keep in mind).

For information on how to use them, I'd recommend taking a look at Tacticool Girlfriend's videos, especially her series for beginners.

Also, don't neglect getting medical equipment (a small IFAK) and learning how to use them!

If you ever want to opt for armor, I'd suggest either a used level II or Level III Kevlar vest and a MICH helmet from eBay.

If you want rifle protection, consider Redstar Defense, a leftist armor maker that makes quite excellent ceramic armor plates for a very afford able price.

Whatever you go with, try to link up with like minded people and become organized in your community. Here's a solid guide on how to do that.

It usually can be reset, it's entirely unexpected that a component that enables that functionality would randomly break. You're essentially implying that any admin who self hosts cannot ever leave their house for any length of time without being irresponsible because they cannot ensure with 100% certainly that a computer component won't fail while their gone, or a lightning storm won't fry something, or a flood won't harm the servers.

Like, dude, c'mon. We're volunteers, and poVoq is running this stuff for free. We're not an enterprise business with multiple staff on hand to swap out failed components 24/7 so that our 'customers' don't lose millions of dollars.

If anything, this only proves the strength of decentralized media, as we're able to swap to a functioning node and continue on our merry way while the other is being repaired. Like what an incredible and resilient system considering none of this is making anyone any money.

Is Reddit in/directly attacking lemmy instances with controversial AI posts to overpower mods and reduce user experience?

I wouldn't be too surprised if reddit was doing some action to keep Lemmy down (like down ranking posts that mention or link to Lemmy in their algorithm), but I don't think lemm.ee shut down from any outside force attacking them, I think it was far more mundane.

A few things probably contributed:

  1. Lemm.ee was the second biggest instance, that's going to attract a fair amount of drama and trolls no matter how you slice it. If you don't have enough mods or admins to deal with that load, it can be overwhelming.

MrKaplan of Lemmy.world mentioned that .world is able to handle their size effectively due to ensuring they have enough active mods to handle their communities so there's less load for the admins, perhaps lemm.ee did not.

  1. Their policy of non-defederation likely increased their drama and report burden, as some instances are known to have more toxic users than others, making defederation a powerful tool to make things manageable and quiet that report notification.

Combined with a lack of fresh admins to rotate out the ones getting burned out, and you've got a potent recipe to make the whole thing super un-fun and feel like an unappreciated slog of a job.

I know, I'm the one who approved your application.

You happened to sign up right before we've had our first particularly bad issue in 3 years. Unlucky, yes, but it's a bit out of order (IMO) to say we're a poorly managed instance based on that, especially seeing as you lost nothing besides the time it took to write your application. :\
