domination is inevitable
Hats off to the creator of LW, it can’t be easy running a server this big. I do hope we don’t just dominate the fediverse though, would kinda defeat the purpose of it.

People going missing in the Mediterranean is old news. That one guy did it for like 20 years.

What are some unexplainable things you have seen?
I was out one night with my dad looking through a telescope at the Orion Nebula when suddenly I noticed one of the stars was moving. It was a dim light and I figured it was a satellite. I tracked it for a while, but then it came to a stop and went the other way. My dad and I swapped off tracking it for probably 10 minutes watching it come almost to a stop and go a different direction several times.
I haven’t the slightest idea what I saw. It was small and dim and sometimes it was hard to pick it out from the other stars. I imagine it had to of been either pretty small or far away. Either way it didn’t make any sense.

Mexican President Threatens to Sue Google Over 'Gulf of America' Label on Maps.

the proper US Board on Geographic Names’s official process not being followed for the name change.
This is the theme of this administration. Doing whatever they want with no regard for process. This gulf of "America" nonsense truly feels like the actions of a believed king or emperor. A frivolous decree that doesn't change anything, doesn't materially affect anything, just an opportunity to exercise their believed power.

Beehaw is sending a message, imho, that instances need take reasonable measures to ensure their users don’t repeatedly commit some sort of abuse.
Do mods even have this kind of power? Can they see what their users are posting on other instances?
For that matter, I don't know if this is so much a statement being made by Beehaw about quality of users as it is a necessary step for their moderation style. I think Beehaw has very strict mdoeration policies and they're just having a hard time keeping up with their own influx of users let alone LW and SIJW who have open registration.
This is also not a permanent judgement (or a moral one on the part of either community’s owner, i should add–we just have differing interests here and that’s fine).

Microsoft Study Finds Relying on AI Kills Your Critical Thinking Skills
Reply in thread
Why do you think AI doesn't exist? Or that there's "no such thing as people 'relying' on it"? "AI" is commonly used to refer to LLMs right now. Within the context of a gizmodo article summarizing a study on the subject, "AI" does exist. A lack of precision doesn't mean it's not descriptive of a real thing.
Also, I don't personally know anyone who "relies" on generative AI, but I don't see why it couldn't happen.
