WTF species of spider is this

These are perfectly harmless and live in colonies. Used to have these around growing up and let them crawl all over my hands. Most spiders in Australia are harmless, there's really only 2 or 3 types you need to worry about. Redback, funnel web and maybe white tip. The rest might hurt if they bite you, and of course an infection is possible if not cleaned but thats for any type of bite really.

My rent doubled in less than a decade

First moved out in the early 00s, rent was anywhere 75-150/w depending. Friends had 2 room units in complex for 95/w. Not even 2 or 3 years later rents were at 200-250/w. Now those same units wont be under 400.

I know airbnb and such arent the sole reason, but when they can rent out their house where nightly prices 350+ where rents are at least 400/w they can rent the place for not even 2 months a year and get the same as if they were renting it out the traditional way. So, naturually there are less longer term rentals available, pushing prices up. We have whole towns which are tourist areas where people cant get a house to live in because of airbnb shit. I'll liikely never own my own home because im paying at least 65% of my income on rent, how the fuck can i save. Fuel, food, energy. Everything going up except wages.

Video Games can't afford to look this good

Reply in thread

I wonder if it has to do with the age of the player. I grew up playing old games, not first gen games but on commadore and such, ms-dos games. Win 3.1, SNES, etc. Graphics in games have never really meant much, sure pretty is pretty but I'm more than happy to play around with noita for a couple hours, simple art styles, blocky textures. I am also fine jumping in to cyberpunk or mgs or last of us or anything newer. As long as I find the gameplay fun that is first and foremost the most important part. IDGAF about multiplayer, to me multiplayer was a cop-out in the late 90s early 00s to not have to actually make decent games, and I still stand by that. IDGAF about stupid features. You make a game I find interesting and I'll likely play it, You make a game that looks pretty and has shitty gameplay I won't even spit in its general direction.

Piracy > resellers

Reply in thread

So, those resellers listed have been known to hold and sell keys that are linked to stolen credit cards and other unauthorised payment methods. The keys are bought up cheap during sales using the stolen credentials then posted on the reseller sites. A few things happen when the victim notifies their bank or institution of the fraud. Steam or whatever site cancels those keys, meaning the person who purchased the key on the reseller site is out a product, the dev/publisher then has to front the cost of the charge back for the fraudulent purchase, or at least the 70% cut they get. Knowing that sometimes the keys you purchase dont work the resellers also offer a service, for an extra fee, to ensure that your key will work.

In essence, the reseller makes money from the purchase of the key, the fraudulent posters of the keys make money from the sale of the key, the legitimate store and the dev lose money due to the chargeback caused by the fraudulent sale, and the user who purchased the key is out money and a product. There are legitimate resellers who dont operate this way but the ones pictured are not those ones.

Thats not even the fact that the reseller wouldn't be selling the key for less than they bought it so the customer is giving more money to someone else rather then the dev. So sure, the dev may have been paid for the keys at sale price, but the end user is paying more which goes to someone else.

I'm starting to wonder if they've thought this out.

Reply in thread

They did. Can't remember the name of the documentary done flat earners made but the used a flashlight and two boards with holes in them at x distance and said if the earth is flat they should see the light through the hole. They couldn't until they lifted the board up confirming the earth isn't flat. Still had to make up bs to explain it though I think.

The worst thing about investment properties is that it raises for bar for entry into owning a home for others. Lets say someone started renting, got some capital together got a house paid it off through hard work. Kudos, thats cool. Then they buy a second house and use the rental income to pay the mortage or whatever. Over time buying more and more. Eventually it's not feasible for people starting out to do the same thing. The owners all own and have multiple streams of income, allowing them to own more and pay more. Pushing up prices and edging out new home owners. Go back 20-30 years and see the difference. It used to be possible for single income households to buy a house but not anymore. Shit, its getting to the point where dual income households are starting to struggle.

Then theres the airbnb effect. Some houses on airbnb and similar are close to the areas weekly rental price for a night. Even if its hald the weekly rental cost for a night, thats still less than 3 months they need to 'lease' out the house to break even with a tradional rental. Some places have absolutly shit rental access due to the abundance of short-term stays. This too, causes rental prices to increase.

Look at the homeless problem that is going on in most western natiions, this isn't the traditional homeless issue caused by drugs or debt or what ever bad outcomes there are. It's a supply issue, caused by too many houses in too few hands. You have working families living in cars or tents all because there is nowhere to live. Which again, leads to higher rental prices due to lack of supply.

Nobody should own more than one house, and if they do, the rent should not cost more, or even equal to a mortage on the house. Rentals should be stepping stones for people after they first move out of home, or seperate from a partner or move locations. They shouldn't be a thing that people have to live in all their lives.

Also, leftist.... ffs. grow up.

If Arithemtic were debated like religion

Reply in thread

Theism is a learned behaviour, taught to children. It is not the default position. Religion spawned from asking 'why' and since knowledge was limited in the before times superstition came to be. That's why most societies around the world have differring views on religion, if it was the default state there would be one religion not multiple.

EU antitrust chief to Tim Cook: Apple must allow third-party app stores

Reply in thread

Don't you think app developers should have the freedom of choice for app stores? Android has multiple places to get apps, lots of FOSS apps aren't on play store, and likely aren't on iOS at all. Having the option for 3rd party store gives not just users, but developers too, an option and access to more apps/users that wouldn't otherwise be available. You want safe secure apps, that's all good.
You mentioned that an app might move away from the app store to a 3rd party store, if you already use and trust that developer's product how will having to get it from a different location change that?
Now, not to sound too harsh, but why your convenience of not having to go get another store more important than a devs ability to host their product in a different location?

Cult of the Dead Cow unveils 'Veilid', "a secure peer-to-peer network for apps that flips off the surveillance economy"

Common sense? Take the signal protocol. Theres more innocent people using it for whatever purpose than there are guilty people using it for whatever purpose. You can't not develop or use a technology just because somebody else might use it for nefarious purposes. Bad people do bad things on the normal internet, does that mean we should start restricting internet usage because someone might do something bad? Of course not, thats just stupid. So why doesn't the same hold true for encryption technologies? Sure someone with ill intentions is going to do things with it we don't like, but the majority of users are just wanting to use said technology so governments and corporations don't see what they are doing.

Or are we not entitled to privacy simply because some people use their privacy to harm others?

Nah, i've seen that doco. He had to go back and kill himself because he got caught up in a mafia scandal and ended up getting jailed, as well as other actions that ended with the earth falling to nuclear war. He was shot at but because of complications the shot didn't kill him, so he had to go back and finish the job for the betterment of humanity.

Finding mainstream media on usenet - am I doing it wrong?

It's recommended to have two providers, one for monthly and one block account, on two seperate backbones. I think /r/piracy or /r/Usenet has a list, and as whirlybird mentioned just add the show to sonarr and it'll eventually grab it.

If you don't have any *are suite I highly recommend getting that set up. Sonarr for tv shows, radarr for movies. It's all set and forget, just add the content you are after and the *are does the rest. You just add your indexer(s), add the provider(s) and you're sorted.
