How can the fediverse scale and grow to large communities like Reddit without large infrastructure and servers? How can a non-profit driven platform afford to keep the lights on if this takes off?

I mean I could be completely wrong but I think that’s where federation actually comes out on top. Look at Reddit, apparently still not even profitable. However if someone on Lemmy owns an instance and infrastructure costs get too high they can stop new communities and users from joining until they get more money through donations or whatever ways people come up with sourcing income.

Again though, this could all be completely wrong and misled but that’s what I think at least.

After the blackout...

Yeah my biggest fear over the last two days has been that people will just hop back over to Reddit again. I’ve been secretly kind of hoping Reddit doesn’t reverse the API changes just so more people will stay here. I honestly do like Lemmy more than I’ve ever liked Reddit. Trying to keep engagement high is why over the last two days I’ve commented more on Lemmy than I have on my 10+ year old Reddit account.

Could federation be a turn-off for more 'mainstream' users?

I think this comment 100% reflects how I feel as well, and I especially agree with your roommate. I’m a decently tech savvy person as well and between learning about federation and overthinking which instance to join it took 20-30 minutes to join Lemmy. I think the people in my life who don’t enjoy stuff like this as much will need me to help set up Lemmy or they won’t join at all.

Staked deposit to ensure good behaviour

Not only do I agree with the comments talking about corruption, but I also just think that would slow fediverse adoption to a crawl. I’m 100% not going to sign up for something that costs money even if I could get it back. It seems like too much of a hassle and potential for losing money. It also seems like it may make it even harder for the less tech literate people to sign up.

How to own a vending machine? How to procurethe machine & the products? Single-use laundry detergent/ softener packs for a laundromat I'm authorized to put a vending machine into.

Does anyone know how profitable vending machine ownership is? Obviously nobody is making their full income on it but I see a lot of videos of people making $700 every week or two but not talking about owning/operating costs. I'm not really considering owning one or anything I'm just curious.

The streamer who spent $1M on an esports team says esports is a terrible business: ‘Everyone is losing a lot of money’

I always wondered whether these teams made a lot of money or not. This makes me wonder too whether these massive esports tournaments, like CSGO majors, make a lot of money or if they’re in the same boat? I’d assume they’d have to if they’ve been going on for this long with big prize pools but I’d apply that same logic to esports orgs too.

announcement: I'm switching to u.fail

Yeah I’m curious about the reason as well. No hate tho, that’s the great part about Lemmy (and federation in general), you can switch instances whenever you want. I’m just curious in case it’s for a reason that would make me want to switch too lol.
