US demands access to tourists' social media histories
As a Canadian, I won't be travelling to the Republic of Gilead anytime soon. That country is becoming worse by the minute.
And since Americans think I'm Latino (I'm not), I don't want to be shipped to El Salvador.

Report: Roughly half of the id Software team have been laid off
It's worse than that:
Another dev allegedly stripped to the bone is id Software, which according to 3D Realms founder Scott Miller has lost “most, if not all” of its coders.
Man. This is heartbreaking. The Idtech engine is dead, the engine that is extremely optimized and much better that that UT engine junk is dead.

My steam machine arrived!

I will not call it overpriced because the current PC market is crazy because of AI. Even Valve isn't happy with the price.
Overpriced would mean that Valve would be making a significant profit. They will not.

Eurogamer asked Valve if there had been any progress in helping games requiring kernel-level anti-cheat, with Valve responding that the Steam Machine's expected focus on multiplayer gaming could encou
Long story short, if the Steam Machine gains enough market share, game publishers will want to join in because it will mean more money for them. It's all about money.

Software engineers are facing an 'identity crisis bordering on depression,' Menlo Ventures partner says
That makes sense. Software engineers have gone from being artists (because yes, software architecture is an art) to becoming AI managers. It's demoralising.
I believe open-source software will continue to provide a refuge for artists.

Microsoft announces sweeping Windows changes - but no apologies
I believe the MacBook Neo was a real wake-up call for management. Apple dominates the high-budget market. Now that Apple has entered the low-budget market, it could threaten their market share, as well as Copilot's.

Chinese CXMT to Match Micron's DRAM Manufacturing Capacity This Year
Watch how quickly the US government will try to ban them in the name of security. They'll claim that they transmit RAM data to the Chinese government 😛.

FreeBSD Just Removed The Last Of Its GPL-Licensed Code
In my opinion, I just don't understand permissive licenses. For example, with FreeBSD's license, companies can essentially "steal" the hard-earned efforts and use them to enrich themselves. For example, FreeBSD could have been a gaming OS, as the PlayStation's OS is FreeBSD. However, they didn't give anything back to the community.
Copyleft licenses, on the other hand, require companies to contribute any changes they make to the code back to the community so that it benefits the community as a whole. In this case, there's no "stealing", companies need to respect the community's efforts by giving back.
That's my two cents anyway.

AI bet goes awry: Oracle fires 21,000 employees
Chinese open-source models are becoming the norm. You don't need the latest model from ChatGPT (e.g., a Ferrari) to complete your task. A simple Honda will suffice (open-source models), and it uses a lot less energy since it runs on your home or company's infrastructure.
Because of that, I predict that we're going to see a lot of financial hardship among AI companies.

Lol... It was foolish of Sony to retire from the PC market... Exclusives will not entice people to buy a PS5 in this economy.

[META] Are paid for, closed source projects, being advertised on this community, appropriate?
I selfhost because I want to be in control of my data and own it. Closed software is the antithesis of that. They're just bots trying to advertise their software.

Surge in Systemd forks after the latest changes
Let's be realistic. All these forks will get us nowhere because systemd has become a platform on which major components of the Linux system depend. KDE's new login depends on systemd, as does Gnome.
These forks are just a reaction to the latest addition. They will fizzle out.

Convinced my partner to install Linux on her laptop. Going with Zorin OS. Thoughts?
One concern I have is she uses her personal laptop for work.
I will never agree to use my personal laptop for work. When I finish work, I hide my work laptop under the sofa so that I don't think about it. I need to physically separate work and my personal life.
If, for any reason, she cannot get a work laptop, I would not recommend installing a Linux distro because her livelihood depends on it.

Microsoft Needs Windows Lite, No telemetry, no spying, no ads, no AI, no .NET, to retain gamers and developers
The author of the blog is living in dreamland. Microsoft will never release Windows Lite because, to management, Windows is a conduit for AI and subscriptions.
Linux is the answer.
