Stop Talking to Each Other and Start Buying Things: Three Decades of Survival in the Desert of Social Media
This was a fantastic read, thank you for sharing it!
I was never on LiveJournal, but I remember spending a lot of time on all sorts of random websites in the 90s and early 00s. Many hosted on Geocities, or Tripod, often with free forum software of some sort, making hundreds of tiny little communities. And over time, each one disappeared.
The fediverse gives me hope; it definitely has its problems, but fundamentally no single person owns the whole thing. Individual corners may come and go, but the network will remain, and that's awesome.

Are you in favour of UBI (Universal Basic Income) due to automation? (6 days old reddit repost)
I support it. Literally the entire purpose of living in a society vs. as hermits, is so that we can help one another out. Lets do more of that.

What do you NOT want to see replicated on kbin?

I hear you, but politics are literally unavoidable. Also, for some of us, especially members of minority groups conservatives have it out for right now, literally just existing openly in a space will sometimes have folks crying politics.

What's the best place to get news now?
Very interested in others folks answers. Honestly, I follow a lot of people on Mastodon who share news. I also follow hashtags for my local area (and here on threadiverse, subscribed to communities focused on my local area). This seems to work okay but isn't quite the firehouse I'm used to.

Hello from Lemmy! How’s life there over on the other side on Kbin?
It's good. I'm on a lemmy instance too, not sure which I prefer, but so far more active here. I appreciate that it doesn't really matter which I use.

you are currently caller number seventeen
I'm happy for you, or sorry that happened. When stuck on hold I just like to close my eyes and dream about horsies

How do I subscribe to a community if it isn't federated yet?

That did it! Thank you :D
I was looking under https://kbin.social/magazines, good to know I should use the search instead :)

FYI, Lemmy and Kbin are Progressive Web Apps, meaning you can install them as regular apps to your phone's home screen
Yeah! Kbin PWA is great. (Though there's a very small amount of sidescroll that makes my frontend web dev heart cry a bit... maybe I should open a pull request for it :))
Though it seems to override my screen orientation settings, making it hard to read while lying in bed XD

I keep getting HTTP 503 errors when trying to go to kbin.social. Is this common for anyone else?
I get it now and then. I assume the servers are just getting hammered.

What are some communities you'd like to see on Lemmy that don't exist yet?
Some game specific ones. Like, Satisfactory, Elden Ring. A Boomer Shooter specific magazine/community might be nice. There's a Toronto biking specific subreddit, but not sure threadiverse is big enough to have enough bicyclists from Toronto for it yet

Other communities aren't federating properly?
My understanding is, a community doesn't start federating until someone on your instance kicks it into motion, usually by searching for it (as you have just done). From that point onwards, posts from that community are shared with your instance, but it doesn't go backwards in time.
This is my impression, but hopefully someone else will chime in.

What was your first PC game ever, and how did you react to it?
The first computer my family had was a really old one with MS DOS. First game was either Nibbles, or a weird platformer called Dark Ages (can't remember which I tried first).
