Megathread for Reddit Blackouts and News - Day 2

I don't care about fixing Reddit and I don't care about teaching Reddit a lesson. I don't care if the site buckles or continues to hold on and grow while they regulalry downgrade their service as they have been doing for the 10 years I've been an active user. No protest of anything Reddit has done has ever caused Reddit to reconsider what they're doing. Reddit does not care about anything because it's not a person. It's a business entity which will attempt by any means to maximise profit. Having a functional website or having human users or moderation at all are not strictly necessary to secure investment or generate ad revenue. Doing what investors want them to do, regardless of the actual effect it may have long-term, is what will get them investment now. That is more important to Reddit than everything else put together. There's no mastermind, no one's at the wheel, no idiot is unilaterally making decisions like a king. There's only the inevitable consequences of the collective decisions of businesspeople participating in corporate capitalism.

The main reason I don't care is that I don't have to care anymore. The Fediverse has been a breath of fresh air after a very long time.

Reddit's CEO really wants you to know that he doesn't care about your feedback

It's always important to take a step back and consider that the mega-rich exist in a totally separate reality than the rest of us do. They were raised in a way that they were never forced out of infancy into adulthood like the rest of us were. I hope that eventually we realize that it's not responsible to allow major institutions to be under the control of adults whose worldview has never progressed since the time they were toddlers.

Have some civility.

I think a lot of people are neglecting to think of Biden's lifetime record in public office. The United States is the nation on Earth with the greatest proportion of its own citizens imprisoned and we have Biden's 1994 crime bill in large part to thank for that. Unfortunately it wasn't terribly shocking when he went on to be more supportive of the Palestinian genocide than any other president in US history other than Trump.

Agreed. It evokes a whole story. Either the Paladin is so overcommitted to their work to such a degree that they are willing to go on dangerous adventures or the society is so legalistic it's the Paladin's duty to accompany their cases wherever they go without exceptions. Alternatively, maybe the Paladin wanted to be an adventurer anyway to escape their boring life as a parole officer and found just such a situation that they can fufill their desires and duties at the same time.

To be fair Voat was commandeered almost immediately or at least within a few days. I remember bouncing back very fast when I found out specifically why so many going there wanted "free speech." I chose to eat corporate shit rather than that malignant anti-social shit at the time. I don't like eating any kind of shit, and it doesn't seem as likely here as it seems like social responsibility is generally being given precedence over allowing fascists to say whatever they want.

Megathread for Reddit Blackouts and News - Day 3

I visited Reddit for the first time in two days and had a thought that has occurred to me constantly for years, "I hate this site." It's still the same alienating crap and it will never change. I glanced over my home page, made a comment about the fediverse being a better alternative in a blackout thread for one of my subs that came back, and popped back here.

I have never heard an anarchist speak this way. I don't want to be left alone, I simply don't want a class of people who believe they hold authority over me as my superiors. Anarchists shouldn't be using anyone. A stable anarchy can't exist as long as people are still thinking in terms of using each other as resources for their own interests.

Murdering each other is against our nature but we've been doing it prolifically since the advent of agriculture so much so that war is seen as a "natural" part of life. The solution of killing all the bad guys so only good guys are left has probably been on the mind of most of those soldiers and military leader for the last 10,000 years. It turns out this approach doesn't end authoritarianism or violence.

If somehow we killed 37% of the human population in no way would that bring us closer to a fair and equitable world. It would be exactly in line with dominator culture hegemony which has existed for the most recent few thousand years. What you described would not be revolutionary, but typical for the present buccaneer philosophy which is popular among the powerful and their thralls.

Texas bans kids from social media without parental consent

While I know why the Texas government would want to make sure children are exposed to nothing but official state propaganda, hopefully an unintended consequence of this is to put a massive hole in the monopolistic mainstream social media userbase since the uncontrollable web including the fediverse would be the only alternative in these states.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned it yet, but Reddit can be pretty hostile almost everywhere other than small niche subs with consistent communities. Before posting a comment, I would always have to consider whether I was willing to fight about it with someone likely to snidely dismiss it through the most paper-thin lazy rhetoric. Sometimes the answer would be yes but too often it would be no.

Call to remove Of Mice and Men from GCSE course

I think this conversation should be more nuanced than comparing it in general to all challenges of books for content of any kind. This particular kind of content in this particular context needs some consideration.

Imagine you are a member of a minority group living in a culture in which people like you were enslaved and murdered by people like most of the others in the classroom (not in reality, but because of a social construct invented by people like most people in the class to serve people like most people in the class). There is one word in particular whose utterance immediately calls this traumatic history into focus like nothing else. You are assigned a book to read in which characters who do not care in the slightest about this history of terror use it regulalry because it was overwhelmingly common during the time it was written not to consider people like you fully human. No one else in the class now cares at all other than the few other students like you, who know they will be harassed if they express being uncomfortable with liberal reminders of an awful past which many still overlook or dismiss. Some of the other students appear to prefer this period of time when things were less "woke."

If you were in that situation, would you want to read that book and participate in discussions about it? I'm not even asking whether you would want to ban it, but wouldn't you consider options other than to ignore the issue altogether?

I've also learned this lesson the hard way through more experience than I should have contributed towards it. If someone values reason and evidence, they will probably not stay on the right. I was raised in a right-wing environment and had right-wing beliefs when I was a teenager, but I was always curious to know as much about things as I could find out. Losing my faith in right-wing ideas was inevitable in my opinion since most of it depends entirely on its adherents not investigating its claims whatsoever. I will absolutely talk to a young conservative that knows me face to face and I have had productive conversations like this, but there's no helping the adult true believer until such a time as they seek to be helped (and even then it's most likely a bad-faith ploy but I'll still take the gamble even though I've never won). It just has to be exposed and opposed.

What do you think about the concept of lesser evil? (i.e. when faced with selecting from two immoral options, the less immoral one should be chosen.)

Too often this option is presented by people who are deliberately manipulating you and causing you to think that you only have the two choices which each benefit them and neither you. Always consider who is offering this choice and why. The true lesser evil here is whatever you have to do to get out of the situation where this choice is being presented to you.

I see. I never made it that far because I immediately was seeing the kind of conversations planting the seeds for the inevitable conclusion you described. There was a sense of "this horrendous bigotry proves that we can say whatever we want here and that's great," which is what turned me off so fast. A very similar thing happened in r/politicalcompassmemes which initially was fairly balanced and interesting but soon became dominated by fascists which were foolishly tolerated. I was one of the fools and actually learned my lesson that time. No tolerance for fascism is the most it deserves.

What would the mechanism be to exterminate 37% of the human race with this degree of precision? Who would be in charge of it and why do we trust them not to continue using such a tool? If it's not a military operation, what would it be?

A major, fundamental issue with your suggestion is that it assumes there are multiple species of humans which exist who are fundamentally different on a genetic level. If I was a god who could snap my fingers and instantly obliterate all conservatives, it would not be the end of conservatism. You yourself are locked in violent thinking, are you absolutely certain that your own children couldn't possibly be attracted to violence when you yourself believe that mass violence on an unprecedented scale is the best opportunity to create a just world? Are you certain that no child born of any survivors would carry any temptation to take advantage of others as those in the past have? Are you sure no one in the surviving billions of people, generationally removed from your mass killing, would have the ability to re-invent a dipshit philosophy like fascism? I don't think its bad genes which causes the myriad evils which result from trauma and poverty. As long as there is an incentive for people to behave in anti-social ways, people will behave in anti-social ways.

You are correct that unreasonable people can't be reasoned with. Dogs also can't be reasoned with but are not a threat to society. This is because we manage them. Trump has demonstrated that you can be a fool-whisperer like Cesar Milan is a dog-whisperer. The problem is that he uses his ability to influence fools for evil instead of good. These unreasonable fear-motivated dupes can be dealt with in ways that take advantage of their cowardice to neutralize themselves as a threat or depend on pro-social groups rather than use their cowardice to fuel despotism. The human race of which you and I are part will contain a vast array of people acting and being acted upon. We as a species can be influenced, but eugenic movements to root out undesirables have never worked.

I'm sure there are many like me who have not had fun on Reddit for a long time and were sticking around because they weren't aware of a better alternative for relatively anonymous social media. I've been wanting to step back away from the internet monoliths for a long time and the fediverse has been pretty promising to me so far.

A one-time donation will help now, and with all the new users it seems like Beehaw needs some support now. A smaller but recurring monthly contribution would also help now and would add to a regular pool of funds which can allow Beehaw to be able to plan how to accommodate the larger community on a permanent basis. I think the community is worth having to wait through some of the strain right now, but I would like to contribute to infrastructure upgrades and maintenance so I have decided to make a recurring contribution.
