Does anyone else hope the bulk of Reddit stays there?

Conversation about hot topics is going to happen no matter what. As long as it stays respectful I think it's ok.

It's weird that there isn't a US-specific Lemmy instance
Reply in thread
Yeah I assume the reason there isn't is because the general ones are US-centric by default and then everyone else has to have somewhere specific to go. But I guess if they want their own dedicated place too why not?

The Greek shipwreck was a horrific tragedy. Yet it didn’t get the attention of the Titanic story | Arwa Mahdawi
The Greek shipwreck is an unfortunately common tragedy. Whether in the Mediterranean or elsewhere migrant bodies frequently wash ashore. The Titanic story is something novel, and I think at least partially people see it as something justified for adventure tourism exclusive to the extremely wealthy to end poorly. There is nothing to really get excitement out of from the shipwreck, it's just sad.

New Zealand PM disagrees with Biden, says Xi not a ‘dictator’
Reply in thread
I'm pretty sure it just doesn't suit New Zealand right now to call him a dictator, especially with a visit coming up in a week. Australia and New Zealand have to occupy a precarious position because they are European/Western in nature but obviously closest to the Asian powers. Therefore they have to try and be besties with the US whilst staying ok with China.

Young Australians far less likely than parents to shift to right as they age, report finds
It's hard to turn more conservative without actually owning a stake in anything as our parents did.

NTA she's probably just insecure about having eaten the chocolate faster than she thought.

This plus they specifically didn't like the openness of these communities vs. their more stringent process (since they're trying to create a specific vibe.)

Startups are using remote work to attract talent; report: 81% of companies with fewer than 5K employees offer remote work vs. 26% for those with 25K+ employees
In my last year of uni now but I'd love to get remote work in the future. I've seen it totally change my mother's lifestyle.

I'm guessing most of the Beehaws at least have duplicates since they cut themselves off.

Why do you personally prefer using an Android phone?
Mainly that there are really solid midrange android phones nowadays. I just can't justify the iPhone pricetag.

End the Exceptionalism: Will the United States Ever Sanction Israel?
I think we know that they won't. The U.S. has never universally applied it's ire based on bad behaviour alone, I don't see why they'd start now.

What value did you get from Reddit that you hope to realize or expand upon here?
Help was there when you needed it, even for niche software or usecases there was more often than not someone who had already asked the question or who could help. This has been invaluable every time I've tried something new (eg. Making a static website, learning Spanish, switching to Linux.)

what does it mean that Beehaw "defederated" from lemmy.world?
Reply in thread
The community vibe is definitely a huge motivation. They want to be able to control the sort of people on their instance which they can't do if the mass user bases from lemmy.world etc. that are (relatively) neutral have access. It's a shame because they had some good communities established.

For me at least the stuff I go to Reddit for answers on doesn't really need citations. It's usually technical how-tos or bugs or whatever. Stuff being private in that case is just annoying.

Why is the indigenous voice to Parliament so controversial?
I think it's controversial because it is a dedicated group/voice for 3.2% of the population which no other minority group would be getting (eg. Croatian-Australians or Mauritian-Australians etc.) That means the indigenous vote would mean more on certain issues (by design) than the non-indigenous. Arguably this can be a good thing because indigenous people have been marginalised more than other groups, and it may lead to better outcomes for them. However, it still represents decision-making/representation becoming distinguished by ethnicity in a codified way.
