That's not far left IMO, that's just left. This is a recurring problem we have in France too, where medias call "far left" parties that are just left. This is a slippery slope, the one on which Overton window slips towards the (far) right...

Transitioning in STEM

I was actually joining the chat to write that things are not that different in biology. I have a PhD and 7 years of postdocs behind me. Over the years I have :

  • been denied a management position because "the team was only men, who wouldn't listen to me" (spoiler alert, they put an incompetent guy in charge who screwed up massively and I ended up taking over, successfully).
  • had a boss who systematically doubted my opinion (while he was not a specialist of the topic) but listened to the very same argument from a male colleague
  • had male Masters students who could speak uninterrupted during meetings when I couldn't
  • got denied a tenure position for a guy with the same profile (literally the same topic and same labs) but much less experience than mine (like 5 years younger) This last one broke me, I ended up quitting academia

Agree

Imo you can't call yourself pro-life and be against a fair social system (at the very least regarding medical fees). Loosing your mother at age 6 becausee insulin costs 400$ a vial is not being protected, neither is dying from cancer at age 12 because the insurance won't pay for your treatment.

He persists

If you have not already done it and can afford it, I'd suggest you buy a running drinking fountain for him. Many cats prefer running water and, if that need is fulfilled, your cat may be less frustrated by the closed faucet / you may be able to reopen it. (You could, in addition, change the faucet to one that cats cannot open).

In France we have a saying "Si t'es pas de gauche, t'es de droite" i.e "if you're not a leftist, then you're on the right wing" meaning that if you do not explicitly reject the paradigm supported by the right then you're implicitly accepting it and thus indirectly support right wing and conservatism.

Sertraline didn't do the trick for me...neither did mirtazapine, or Escitalopram, or Quetiapine. Psychiatric drugs are life savers but finding the one that'll actually save your life can be a freaking pain (if anyone reading this is in that "still looking" stage, don't give up though, once you find one that suits you it's a game changer, life can have colours again).

One of those funny coincidences

I've been a researcher for over a decade and I literally started declining all media contacts because of my terrible experience with so-called "journalists". Most of the journalists I interacted with did clearly not give a single shit about sharing my actual findings. All they want is a cool headline even if it means completely disrespecting years of work as well as their audience. I've seen journalists, who committed to take my feedback about whether they reported the theory or findings correctly, publish complete bullshit without checking with me. Others cited my paper while giving a summary of the findings of another paper and some literally and blatantly lied in a documentary. They still publish bullshit but at least they don't waste my time anymore and I no longer read "scientific" papers available to the general public knowing what's behind the scene.

I wish they'd finished that show.

Holding for 10 minutes is already quite impressive. When I moved abroad and arrived at my future roommate's house for the first time (he had 3 dogs) I kept telling myself "don't say hi to the dogs before the guy" and I failed majestically, ending up on my knees kissing these dogs before greeting him. (Luckily he loved dogs just as much as I do and found it funny).

The way I see it, between left and far left the direction is roughly the same, that's the means and end point that differ (i.e. revolution or not and how far we go into sharing resources). This is an important difference and they should thus not be mixed.

I see what you mean and when I first heard that saying I thought so too. That's why I developed a bit after. In my opinion it does not mean "if you're not with us you're against us in an irreversible manner" at all (I don't fight against individuals, I fight against a toxic ideology). To me, it mostly aims to denounce the fact that centrists are actually right wing people who don't admit it. And, at least in France, the situation tends to confirm that : Macron was officially "neither on the left nor on the right" and it has become clearer and clearer that he is, in fact, completely on the right end of the political spectrum (if not worse for some of our ministers like Retailleau who clearly carries a far right ideology).

How do you beat post-work floppiness?

There's a lot of good advice to improve things by changing your behaviour. It is also worth checking your health. I have had similar issues but it got better after I was treated for vitamin B9 deficiency. I was just plain exhausted but after a blood test confirming the issue and a few weeks of supplements prescribed by my doc, things got so much better. Depression and burn out have also been mentioned and it is definitely worth asking for a depression test if you see a doctor. That shit is so exhausting. When I was depressed, I could sleep like 10h a night and I still had zero energy.

Depends on the purpose. For documents (especially those on which people work collaboratively over long periods of time) I find YYYY-MM-DD ideal. It spares the issues around day or month first when Europeans and people from the US work together, the document are easy to sort and, if it takes more than a year to complete the project (as is often the case in research) things don't get messy.

Omg you're making me freak out. I had to quit academia a year and a half ago (after 7 years of postdocs) and, after a bad experience in the private sector (techy start up bitch who was just plain insane), I've been struggling for 10 months to find a new path and a job...and I'm still nowhere near finding something I'm afraid.

Hi, I'm french and, while I would genuinely love for my country to be a safe space for trans people, I feel like I should warn you: things here are not as bad as in the US but the far right is progressing real fast and I'm quite afraid that they'll pass in 2027. We (the leftists) are fighting the best we can but the media and our government are definitely inclined towards the far right already. Feel free to save my handle to get in touch if you move to France, I'll be happy to help and share some info and advice. Best of luck

Edibles

My bf prefers savoury stuff too and figured that, as the important part was having fat to dissolve THC, a cheese-based sauce could work. He tried blue cheese and cream sauce...it worked (almost too) well: he had a lovely dinner and got high AF

Exactly, I didn't want to amend their paper myself, I just wanted to tell them which parts were inaccurate so they could change it. It blatantly shows that they don't care about sharing valid information and that they don't give a shit about our work or the people they "inform". And I'm talking about massive media's like the discovery channel for instance. Ironically, one of the few who did a good job was a tiny web journal. They took my feedback into account and it was the best article about my work that was published that year.
