Apollo for Reddit is shutting down

Reply in thread

Edit: I want to note that, since one of the biggest sticking points with 3rd-party apps has been both accessibility for the blind and deaf and mod tools, they’re both on our minds as we design the interface. Getting both right will, of course, take time, but we want everyone to know that we fully intend to make our app usable for everyone.

This is excellent to hear. If you're still on reddit, you should post this to r/blind, as they've been in limbo about whether their tools will be granted an "exception" to use the reddit API and they may be looking into alternatives for their community.

DAE dislike the term "neurodivergent" as applied to ADHD?

I don't think the term "neurodivergent" implies there's nothing wrong with you and you don't need treatment. Neurodivergent is also used to describe bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and schizoaffective disorder. The term means that there is a structural difference in how the brain deveops in comparison to neurotypical people, as opposed to a "chemical imbalance" as is often used to describe mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety, which you can be born with but you can also develop due to trauma.

Some general thoughts on be(e)havior

There have been some rather active discussions about political leanings on the internet and the behaviors often exhibited by members of these political groups that rightfully should not be tone policed. However, I would also like for you to take a second and consider how individuals who happen to share these political leanings but do not exhibit the behavior you are calling out might feel accessing or interacting with content on Beehaw.

I think one way to verbalize this is: In the absence of evidence to the contrary, assume the other person is acting in good faith. Try to interpret their statements generously - perhaps English is their second language so they don't see how a word they used may be offensive, or perhaps they are simply not eloquent about a particular topic and don't know the correct vocabulary. Maybe they are young and have only been exposed to the viewpoints in their small, less diverse area, and need a little (gentle) education. And consider that even if the person you're discussing with does not fit into those categories and will not be swayed, maybe someone else who is reading the post you're making does, and maybe your words will resonate with them.

However, I think it's also important to acknowledge the fact that it's not the job of marginalized people to educate the dominant group, so it's dependent on the entire community to be willing to both listen and educate (while not speaking over those of the marginalized group who are willing to make the effort to speak).

Is anyone else beginning to mourn reddit?

I honestly doubt I will entirely stop using it, but I will likely entirely stop using it on mobile, and continue to use adblock on old.reddit. Some of the communities there are fairly irreplacable for me for now, especially hobby communities with their wikis and tutorials and years of answered questions you can search for.

It will most likely stop being my main time waster website on the net, though, and for that I'm not sad.

It’s WIP Wednesday! What’re you working on right now?

I have 3 cross stitch projects I’m working on right now.

This first one is actually finished, but I need to get around to washing and framing it. It was a Christmas present for my father, so hopefully I can get it done soon 😅 It’s of Zion National Park which is in Utah, and is one of his favorites. The pattern is by Awesome Pattern Studio

This next one is a silly one that I started last pride month and has been sitting at about 80% done for a year, so I intend to finish this pride month - the bi pride opossum. Just need to finish the foliage. The pattern is by Studio Ansitru

Finally my monster WIP, the 2021 stitchalong from Modern Folk Embroidery. Hoping to get this one done within this year. Since it’s only 2 colors it actually works up pretty quickly. Pattern is by Modern Folk Embroidery

Those are all of my WIPs for now. I have the materials for another project on order and possibly arriving on Friday.

Feeling unable to be my authentic self

Your feelings are valid and I hope you are doing well, all things considered.

There is huge value in discussing your feelings with those who are going through the same things as you, or who have gone through it in the past. I hope you do consider coming to [email protected] and chatting there if you are comfortable with it. And, for what it's worth, even if you never plan to come out publicly, you are still valid as whatever gender (or lack thereof) that you identify as, and you deserve to feel supported and loved.

What is your favourite Lemmy community, which is not on lemmy.ml?

Reply in thread

In addition to what @[email protected] mentioned about changing the filter and searching, you can link it from your own instance like so:

https://lemmy.ml/c/[email protected]

You can also grab the URL to any community or post on another instance, return to your own instance, and paste the URL into the search bar. If you're the first person to ever search for that server it might not find anything at first, but it'll fetch the data and probably work in a couple minutes.

Yeah, there's definitely a conversation to be had about the terms and their usefulness. I do think it can be useful to differentiate "maybe possibly one day curable" conditions vs "you will always have this" conditions, and right now "neurodiverse" is used as that umbrella term. If something else suits it better later, I'm open to it.

However, just because different conditions can cause the same symptoms doesn't mean we should group them together IMO. Both a cold and lung cancer can cause coughing, but it's important to know why you are coughing to receive effective treatment, if that quick and rough analogy makes sense.

LGBTQ+ Book Recommendations

  • The Death of Vivek Oji by Akwaeke Emezi - Deals with trans issues in Nigeria, where Emezi is from.

  • Pet by Akwaeke Emezi - A YA novel with a trans main character, but doesn't deal with trans issues. It's nice to have trans representation in a book that's not about trans trauma. Also has positive representation of polyamory and disability in side characters.

  • Under the Udala Trees by Chinelo Okparanta - About the lesbian experience in Nigeria, where Okparanta is from.

  • A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers - Nonbinary main character, but does not explicitly deal with trans issues.

  • Perfect on Paper by Sophie Gonzales - YA novel that deals with bi erasure.

Any good detective games you all would recommend?

I had some weird bugs replaying it recently but maybe you'll have better luck than me - Orwell

Cloudpunk is more of a delivery game that has a mystery aspect but I enjoyed it (haven't finished it yet)

CaseCracker was enjoyable but there were some translation issues I think so some things weren't clear in English.
