The $700 PS5 Pro doesn’t come with a disc drive
This is yet another nail in the coffin of physical media. Or, in other words games you actually own instead of long term lease.

Regrettably, this focused flexibility has an unintended side effect. It makes people with children less desirable in the job market. If it is a universal right, then it has the effect of pulling those with kids into parity with the non parents.

Russia cut off its troops from Discord, the video gaming comms tool they use to coordinate attacks in Ukraine

Maybe it took this long to develop an alternative. They now have an alternative... Right? The Kremlin wouldn't send it's citizens off to fight without being sufficiently equipped... Right?

Democratic governor Hochul says she’s not ready to back Zohran Mamdani for NYC mayor yet — slamming his plan to tax the rich
It's OK, he doesn't need her endorsement anyway, just the electorate's. At this stage I think an establishment democrat endorsement will do more harm to Mamdani's campaign than this shun will do.

Then they'll have a situation no better than Columbia. The deal is we won't protest if you divest. If either party reneges on that deal we go back to where we were before the deal. That's the consequence of saying "no".

Israel Continues to Shoot Children in the Head During the Gaza Ceasefire
I can explain why the Israelis are murdering innocent children. Children are the future, without them the Palestinians have none. It's as brutal as that.

Massive pro-Palestinian student protests hit universities in the US, Europe and Australia
They mention the afraid Jewish students, but they didn't cover any Jewish protestors. It makes it seem that you can't be Jewish and protest against the Israeli apartheid and ethnic cleansing. And protest for BDS.

World Moving On Without USA As It Declines
Reply in thread
You're right about the US's military, but you know who also had an outstanding military? Almost all (now dead) empires. I think it stretches exceptionalism beyond all credibility to think the US will buck this trend. That the US empire will be thought of in the past tense is pretty much inevitable, I'm most worried about how it goes. Will it be with a bang, or a whimper. I fearful of the former as they can mount a pretty big bang.

I don't tend to rely as much on Valve's compatibility rating as I do ProtonDB's. Even though it takes extra steps.

'Oppenheimer' finally premieres in Japan to mixed reactions and high emotions
Reply in thread
Almost... Another way to see it is they burdened future generations as an expedient measure to save the lives of the people now in the past. Another another way to look at the bomb is preventing another world war.
An interesting historical point is Japan had largely been defeated by the time the bombs were dropped. And they had the option to bomb an uninhabited (or very lightly) part of Japan's territory as a show of force. But, instead they specifically chose to irradiate civilians.

I was told that it was convention to use the highest government title that a person received once they leave government. Personally, I don't think that explanation holds much water. We don't really hear, for example of President Obama any more. Nor do we hear Secretary of State Clinton. On a practical matter, it can cause confusion so outside propaganda, I don't see much utility in it.

Dozens from UK take up Putin’s offer to ditch ‘woke’ West and move to Russia
At least 34 people have requested to move to Russia from the UK
What does this mean. So the actual number could be any number between 34 and the entire population of the UK?
Or, does it mean that there is 34 people that we know of. And they're having trouble finding anyone else.
I wonder how many Russians have left Russia in the same time period.
I also wonder what percentage 34 people are of the entire population of the UK.
It just strikes me as a desperate propaganda ploy from the Kremlin. Inflating a nothing burger beyond all proportion.
I wish our expats well. And the best of luck to 'em.

Can democracy survive now the world’s richest man has it in his sights? | George Monbiot | The Guardian

Charity is a cold grey loveless thing. If a rich man wants to help the poor, he should pay his taxes gladly, not dole out money at a whim.

Polish Train Maker Is Suing the Hackers Who Exposed Its Anti-Repair Tricks
Looking at the requested penalty makes me wonder why they didn't request one trillion. I mean if you are being blatant about your ulterior motive to scare off further investigation into your unethical practices.
Anyway they now got the stink on them. Any railway operator dealing with them will have no one but themselves to blame going forward.

What happens when the taps run dry? England is about to find out
I see an interesting parallel to the nationalisation of UK coal back in the day. Basically, the collieries prior to nationalisation were critically mismanaged. So, the government bought them off the private hands. However, the valuation was too high for an outright purchase, so the Government bought the infrastructure in installments. This meant that as an award to the previous owners for severe mismanagement they got regular income without having to do anything to get it.
I think there's a lesson in there, some where.

At the risk of explaining a joke into the ground your comment has more than one reference. The UK's two main parties have their colors flipped. Labour's color is red.
