My wife and I make more money now than we have at any point in our lives and we have almost nothing to show for it and we've worked full time with no layoffs for 30 years and have each only changed jobs once. . We don't spend frivolously we just don't save well and when we do it always seems something comes up and wipes out our bank account, health, vehicle, etc.
