What are some idioms that no longer make sense? Can you think of a modern replacement?

"Pulling my leg." Meaning you are making something up/joking at someones expense.

It does not have any real connection to the present. The idiom came about in the mid-19th century. There's two competing theories about how it came about. The prevailing theory is that pick pockets, particularly child pick pockets, would pull on people legs to distract their mark. The darker theory is that it was related to pulling someone's legs when they were hanged in order to finish the ordeal if they didn't die from the initial drop.

Dude is the most establishment, greedy, douche in metal. Personally, my Napster account was banned way back when and I got an RIAA letter too! So absolutely fuck that guy. I could probably dig deeper into the shit he's done but like this was enough for me to never listen to any Metallica song again.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metallica_v._Napster,_Inc.

But if we want to get into the whole band, James Hetfield is a fucking douche too. He was proud of the fact that the CIA used their music to torture people because he's, as far as I can tell, a mega-huge asshole:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ABCDEFG_(album)

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2008/jun/19/usa.guantanamo

"If the Iraqis aren't used to freedom, then I'm glad to be part of their exposure," James Hetfield, co-founder of Metallica, has said. As for his music being torture, he laughed: "We've been punishing our parents, our wives, our loved ones with this music for ever. Why should the Iraqis be any different?"

Now he's all, "don't be political." He can go fuck himself just as hard. Just a big pile of trash parading around as a human.

I agree with this other than calling metal pop. Like that's just a fundamental misunderstanding of music genres that I cannot abide. The rest, especially the part about popular musicians often just being paid for actors, is spot on.

I've posted this in the past Jeffrey Lewis and The Rain have a fantastic lyric about this in WWPRD:

Bands who break through walls with speakers

Not just try to sell you sneakers

You want bands who wanna sell you things

Or bands who wanna tell you things?

I gotta say up front I don't know how much this really matters. Look, if you can find venue/record store, that isn't just making a dig at them by calling them pop, I'll consider changing my definition. But like I've never, in the hundreds of record stores I've been in, or the multiple different places I've listened to music, seen Metallica in the Pop section. It just does not fit description or sound that people associate with pop.

Additionally, I legitimately don't think Metallica are talented enough to make a pop/poppy song. I think they are a band of one trick ponies and they never strayed super far from that in my past listening, or in my incredibly limited recent listening.

Like just reading through the wiki for pop music and I don't see how their music fits the bill really. There are just too many differences in the style, makeup, and general sound to make the square peg fit in the round hole in my opinion:

Fair enough. I'll start moving their records to the pop section when I go to music stores!

Out of curiosity how would you classify Nirvana? To stay in the metal genre, a better example might be System of A Down. Specifically songs like Chop Suey! fit the definition you have as I understand it.

Personally, I think it gets sort of needlessly pedantic to put EVERY band into the pop category because they had a poppy/popular song. I also think people, especially metal heads, like to exclude bands from the genre they like because they don't like that band in particular. They even have had some rather interesting takes about what is "metal" and go to great lengths to defend that notion. Not to say other music fans don't do it, just that metal seems to struggle with it more than most.

You have to link sources ya screwball. It's funny you didn't and I think you know why you didn't link it. It may have something to do with the propaganda you're spewing:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propaganda

The term is essentially contested and some have argued for a neutral definition,[54][55]: 9  arguing that ethics depend on intent and context,[55] while others define it as necessarily unethical and negative.[56] Emma Briant defines it as "the deliberate manipulation of representations (including text, pictures, video, speech etc.) with the intention of producing any effect in the audience (e.g. action or inaction; reinforcement or transformation of feelings, ideas, attitudes, or behaviours) that is desired by the propagandist."

Propaganda has existed since the beginning of recorded history. In the New Kingdom of Egypt, the state utilized a "Clean Victory"[failed verification] ideology to prioritize the preservation of Maat (cosmic order) over factual military reporting.[21] Temple reliefs sanitized warfare by omitting violence against non-combatants,[22] portraying the Pharaoh as a disciplined protector rather than a chaotic aggressor.[23][unreliable source?] This was exemplified by Ramesses II, who reframed the Battle of Kadesh, a stalemate, as a divine personal victory.[24] To visually reinforce this authority, artists used hierarchical scaling to depict the king as a giant among men,[25] utilizing motifs like the "smiting of the enemy" to symbolize the Pharaoh's triumph over chaos.

According to Harold Lasswell, the term began to fall out of favor due to growing public suspicion of propaganda in the wake of its use during World War I by the Creel Committee in the United States and the Ministry of Information in Britain: Writing in 1928, Lasswell observed, "In democratic countries the official propaganda bureau was looked upon with genuine alarm, for fear that it might be suborned to party and personal ends. The outcry in the United States against Mr. Creel's famous Bureau of Public Information (or 'Inflammation') helped to din into the public mind the fact that propaganda existed.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McCarthyism

McCarthyism is a political practice defined by the accusation and investigation of left-wing individuals of communist and Soviet influence on American institutions and of Soviet espionage in the United States during the late 1940s through the 1950s, heavily associated with the McCarthy era.[1] After the mid-1950s, U.S. senator Joseph McCarthy, who had spearheaded the campaign, gradually lost his public popularity after several of his accusations were found to be false.

McCarthy was a huge asshole, and caused immense harm. However, claiming he's the reason there was a negative connotations with the word, then saying it happened during WWI and WWII, and then only viewing it from the incredibly modern western centric view is incredibly dishonest.

I dunno. I still put those into metal, just sellout bullshit metal. I feel like you have to take the good with the bad. I try not to get all "no true scotsman" with bands just cause I personally despise everything they make and stand for.

Pop is just a completely different genre, with a completely different sound. That's why personally, I just can't abide by saying that Metallica, no matter how shit at metal they are, is somehow pop. There's not a single song I can think of that I would classify as pop music that I've heard from them. In fairness though, I don't think I've listened to them in like 25ish years so they might have completely changed and started making dance music or some shit.

For an added little further explanation I hate Pantera cause they're bunch of weird racists. I still think they make metal music. They're just shit heads and I'll never listen to their garbage either.

It wasn’t always a meaningless pejorative. McCarthyism did that, which is still going on.

Did you fail history class like super bad or something? There's been propaganda from literally every country for basically all written history, and people have been calling it for just as long.
