Farmers in Africa say their soil is dying and chemical fertilizers are in part to blame

Reply in thread

Years ago I went to Kenya and Tanzania to asses some fields for trials of new cultivars my group was developing. There were a lot of issues with people seeing a yearly decrease in crop yield. But the major issue was actually the lack of crop rotation causing a buildup of disease in the soil which was weakening the plants each year.

I don't know this guy or his field. And, not carefully fertilizing fields can cause root burn for sure. But poor agricultural yield in Africa is definitely impacted by poor crop rotation.

Harvard talks free speech but silences Palestine

Why does it feel like everyone is falling in line for this genocide? History will not look back kindly on the way the world watched as this happened. At least (and this isn't much of an excuse) other genocides werent on the news every day as our leaders and institutions sat by and silenced any dissent.

US Supreme Court blocks student loan forgiveness plan

Reply in thread

Except this wasn't enacted by the president but by the Secretary of Education under the Biden administration and the power was given to them by congress as part of the HEROES act.

If the supreme court wasn't corrupt, they might have still struck this down but not under the cases that reached the supreme court. The fact that they found the original cases to have standing is actually insane and it's likely to open a can of worms because they were basically:

"it's not fair for only certain groups to benefit from government programs."

Do you know how many things are going to be challenged now? And, for it not to create chaos, these new challenges will have to go to the supreme court again where they will have to do mental gymnastics to backpedal on why their decision applies here but not on whatever weird future cases. Jesus what a circus.

"Cis" and "trans" are different types of a person's.... what?

Cis and trans are terms that came before their application to gender identity. I learned themin organic chemistry in reference to chemical isomers.

Wikipedia: The prefixes "cis" and "trans" are from Latin: "this side of" and "the other side of", respectively.

As applied to gender, "this side of" you are the gender of the sex you were born as. "The other side of" means you have switched your gender to the other side of the sex from which you were born.

Edit: to answer your question more directly, your gender is cis or trans of the sex you were born as. The question you ask for is: "is your gender cis or trans of your sex?"

In an alternate reality...

This is the exact problem. The DNC get to watch Trump enact terrible legislation. The electorate will swing back to them. They then will then repeal all the legislation they don't benefit from and will look like the good guys. But they'll keep all the legislation that helps politicians pocket more money and humm and haw about bipartisanship making it difficult to change things.

They'd rather do this than have a shift within the party that causes the senior politicians to lose their crowns.

Those specific types of leftists want accelerationism the us. They will encourage you not to vote even. They want trump because they think that Trump will crash the government and the US will either be crippled and unable to exert imperialism or the people will become so disenfranchised they'll experience class consciousness and there will be a glorious socialist revolution. What they don't realize is that companies will gobble up power and the US will become corporate feudalism that's even more awful on the global stage and few citizens will fight back as long as they feel personally safe and can eat.

Anti intellectualism is rampant everywhere. It's dangerous to act like far right anti intellectual populism isn't a rampant global phenomenon right now. Sure its easier to see it in the declining USA empire as it collapses in part due to its like far right anti intellectual populism, but its everywhere.

What from reddit do you hope to never see on lemmy?

Riiight? Like, women shouldn't be hitting people for sure and there should be consequential. But men celebrating that women getting knocked out gives me the creeps. Honestly, if it was anyone substantially larger knocking out someone so much weaker of any gender or age it would be wrong. Imaging a body builder knocking out an old man or a small boy? Very wrong. I think everyine could agree there. But reddit just loves to celebrate this specific brand if violence on women.

White House official threatens to redraw Canadian border

One American to another, we need to recognize that most of our country either voted for this or enabled it by not voting. Most if us either support this malicious behavior or are apathetic to it. Sure. If you take a poll, most Americans don't want the us to mess with Canada. But if people won't even vote, then how do you expect them to take up arms to save Canada?

US Supreme Court blocks student loan forgiveness plan

The extent of the power of the HEROES act is debatable and thus why this has reached the supreme court. If you read it, the HEROES act was very vague the begin with, as these things often out in our messed up legal system. Like I said. They could argue against or for the HEROES ability to grant this power and they could easily argue it either way because that's how our legal system works. But, that they did it with these cases is still insane because the sanding for these cases is wacko.

Warren Buffett’s son is on track to donate $1 billion in aid to Ukraine this year—and pledges to continue despite Trump’s shaky relations

I have mixed feelings. His gist is basically that he agrees billionaires shouldn't exist and that there's no ethical billionaire and he wants reforms to make it so they don't. But he argues that we live in a system where billionaires are inevitable and that it would be stupid not to invest wisely and make billions if he can because if he doesn't someone else just will and he can use the money for good.

However, even if you buy this narrative of good billionaire, you can just look to his ties will Bill Gates and the Bill and Melinda gates foundation to see that, even if he did mean well, his perception on how to do good is completely twisted.
