Is the 3DS worth purchasing despite it being "obsolete"?

I collect gaming handhelds and own several 3ds handhelds, modded and un-modded. I also have a modestly large collection of games. The modding potential is high, but even unmodded, the big draw for me is:

  1. Form factor. The non-xl version is very pocketable, and the XL takes up very little space in a backpack.

  2. Exclusive game selection. There are soooo many excellent titles. The Etrian Odyssey series. Shin Megami Tensei. Fire Emblem. Pokémon. Several Legend of Zelda titles. If you love classic RPGs there’s an abundance here. Sure, you could emulate, but I think there’s no replacement for playing these games as originally intended.

The biggest reason to stay away is obviously cost. I’ve paid up to $1200 usd for new in box examples, and even fairly chewed up 3ds handhelds can run you a couple hundred. The games are also highly collectible, and while there are many cheap titles to be found on eBay, most of the really desirable games can run you $50-$400 depending on condition, obviously with sealed games in brand new condition being extremely costly.

If funds are tight you’d be much better off emulating on one of many quality emulation devices. The market is rife with really good hardware for retro gaming.

Help me choose my 2nd (Dual boot) Linux distro on my PC as a Linux beginner

Big second for CachyOS.

I distro hop a fair bit but I keep coming back to Cachy. Personally, I choose to manage and maintain my machine entirely through the terminal, but with Shelly (the GUI package manager CachyOS ships with) and their built in updater, you could probably do all of your basic gaming and video editing for years without ever having to launch a terminal.

Also, snapper backups functional out of the box. Something breaks? Just pick the most recent snapper image in the boot menu, and hold off on updating for a few days.

On that note, Cachy slows their update releases a little more than Arch, so while it’s still bleeding edge, there’s still a little buffer time for stability sake, same with EndeavourOS, another great arch based distro.

Ubuntu has its merits. It’s simple and it generally just works, but Cachy is not nearly difficult enough to pass on.

1 death reported at Burning Man while festival attendees remain stuck in the Nevada desert from heavy rains

Reply in thread

I used to run in a party crowd that had a LOT of burning man folks in it. There were a couple of them that had middle class incomes, maybe even leaning upper middle class. Those are usually the ones that had an art car or whatever that they sank some money into, instead of the crap that most upper middle class Americans blow their money on.

But the rest of them? They worked at restaurants, did massage therapy, teachers, etc. normal people with median or lower incomes that would forego other expenses to set aside a little a money for their annual get high in the desert trip.

Yes, there’s a bunch of elitists at the core of the event, but it’s not the majority.

No graphics for you!

After a fiasco with my 72 year old father in law’s laptop, I no longer recommend Linux Mint to people. On a fairly new Asus, multiple attempts at installing were needed to get it running, and he had constant issues that pushed him away from it. Installed Ubuntu for him, no issues over the past year. Sure it has snaps. He doesn’t know the difference and everything seems to be working fine. The goal is no IT support calls from the old man and Ubuntu achieved it.

Bank of America employee dies after working 120 hour weeks, associates organizing strike

Union tradesman here, heavy industrial. The most I ever pulled in one week was 102 hours. It was for a time sensitive, round the clock, “once we start this we can’t stop until it’s done” kind of affair. Imagine two 12 hour shifts, but when you’d normally leave, you’d stay as long as you could to help get the night shift guys up and running.

It only lasted the one week, and we all made an obscene amount of money, but any longer than that and I would have had to tell them I had to go back to my usual 60 hours. I had to force myself to stay sharp because there was dangerous shit that needed to be done, I couldn’t imagine 4 weeks of it. No one should be forced into it, even commuting home after work like that is dangerous.

Epstein Release. Uh.. guys?

I don’t disagree that this shit needs to be addressed, but you do realize that anyone can call the FBI and make claims, and those claims do have to be recorded. Sure, these claims seem on brand, but they are just that. Unsubstantiated claims.

So like, yes, fuck the pedo elite, but don’t start feeling too vindicated when you see something like this, that has no evidentiary weight to it that we know of.
