Are you guys tired of "Material You" design?

As a UI/UX designer myself (hobbyist, to be clear), I really like it.

There seems to be this notion in the homebrew/FOSS/Linux community that "wasted space" is always non-preferable. I can see this being true for some people, but I feel like a lot of people are band wagoning this opinion.

It's pretty universally known and accepted in the design community that padding is extremely important when it comes to helping your brain read and separate content. And to be fair, most non-tech people prefer space and padding in their applications to make things easier to understand.

I can be entirely off base here, but TLDR: I like padding and it's literally beneficial to helping your brain understand the layout of what you're looking at better.

I found a major communication problem with public perception of Lemmy. they seem to think a community is tied to a particular instance

I feel like this is how it will realistically happen though. People will flock to one instance and use that one community, otherwise it becomes too stagnated.

The best thing about federation is that if that hugely popular community's instance were to crash/go down, the community can just join another one. Sure it might take some coordination, but why not have one central place to hang out until it gets shitty?

Imagine youre at your favorite bar. They get new owners and then all their prices change. But hey guess what, you can make an exact copy of the same bar on a different instance! "Hey guys, lets all go to this new bar thats literally the same thing across the street!" and then everybody is happy.

Which music streaming app should I use?

Reply in thread

The reason why I can't recommend YouTube music is that it uses audio from videos instead of playing the studio versions of the tracks. The fact that it makes me listen to those silly audio parts in music videos while I'm trying to listen to a studio release is terrible in my opinion, and I couldn't figure out a way to hide those results from search entirely. Does anybody know if they've fixed this?

Has anyone used Connect for Lemmy?

I've been trying it out. Of course there's still a bit of polish to add, but the overall look and feel is exactly what I was looking for in a Lemmy reader app. Simplistic, large, clear text. I really love how the action/respond buttons dont appear until you tap the comment. Super intuitive.

The only thing missing is 0.18 support, which isn't really a complaint considering it just started rolling out earlier today. That's what I get for being on the bleeding edge I guess.

Why I can't see some comments from other instances?

This is a common issue that everybody deals with right now on Lemmy, due to federation requests being dropped instead of restarted. Hopefully, future versions of Lemmy will improve this issue.

For now, I find the best way to deal with it is to simply try to not click over to the other instance if you can help it. I just pretend those other comments aren't there.

Sure, you can copy paste direct links in two tabs, but I don't think that's really worth it.
