World Cup tourists aren’t leaving tips — and restaurants are fighting back

Reply in thread

I remember when I spent time in the US, tipping was the absolute worst part of the experience.

If I was with a big group going to a restaurant we would have a server constantly checking in with us, chatting and telling stories, getting us deals and freebies. When I would go out alone I would get ignored. If I dressed down I would be treated worse than if I was dressed up. One time I even waited an hour for a table before walking out as larger groups got seated ahead of me. How people are treated is based on how much money they think you'll hand over.

Everything about tipping is greed and it's gross.

All restaurants in the US require tipping. You'll have to boycott all of them, and that won't send a message about tipping. You would need the majority of people to still go to restaurants and not tip to send the message and that's never going to happen because people have been brainwashed to think their value as a human being requires generous tipping. Comments like "if you don't tip you're an asshole" means the system is working as intended and will never change.

Can it be done?

It was done. Teletext delivered news, sports results, horoscopes, closed captions, all directly to your TV in real-time. It was quite clever as a pre-internet method to deliver text content to every home.

All the people in the comments here being unaware of this makes me feel old.

Morpheus Actor Laurence Fishburne Reveals He Was Turned Down for The Matrix Resurrections — So He Might Not Be Back for Matrix 5 Either - IGN [Morpheus' character dies in The Matrix Online]

Fishburne was very diplomatic when asked for his opinion on the finished Matrix 4: "it was better than I expected, but not as good as I had hoped".

Hugo weaving, the actor for Smith, didn't appear in the film due to alleged scheduling conflicts, but I suspect he took a look at the script and noped out of it.

It's a shame, it could've been good.

rulebreaking

As a non American who has visited the US,

It's the creepiest thing when the anthem starts playing and everyone around you turns into zombies, all facing the same direction, all frozen in place. The first time it happened I felt like I was the only human left in an Invasion of the Body Snatchers situation.

Real brainwashed vibes.

Should Lemmy have Karma?

A karma metric would just hasten the decline that happened to Reddit. People liked OG Reddit as a forum to connect with like minded people. The karma situation lead to karma farm tactics with the goal of selling accounts or promoting commercial or political content. The lack of karma will remove a reason for bad actors to do the same here. It also removes the karma motivation for low effort reposts.

Comments should be voted on based on their contribution to the discussion. That's a natural way to guide the conversation in a productive direction.

I would prefer Lemmy et al to stay away from broad appeal BS like celebrity AMAs, and karma thirsty low effort people pleasers. It shouldn't be a place for special events, it should be a place for productive community conversation.

Man who lost $780 million in Bitcoin in a landfill now wants to buy the entire dump before city closes the site

Sad story.

That's enough money to have a good life and provide a good life to your loved ones. If he never finds it, he is a crazy man. If he finds it he is a smart man. A normal person can't earn that much in a lifetime. Even a miniscule chance of finding it could drive someone to obsession.

For the sake of his sanity, and for a good story, I hope he finds it, but I doubt he will.

I remember seeing a bit of Oprah on TV and they were talking about changing the toilet roll. She was saying how she recently discovered it only takes 30 seconds to change and her advice to viewers was that you could even change it while you were on the toilet. A fully grown woman was telling the world that she just discovered changing the toilet roll. How out of touch can a person be?

This is framed like 80 generations is a small number, but that's huge. Culture and civilization moves so quickly that even 3 generations ago life is barely recognisable. I can't even imagine what life was like 40 generations ago.
