[Solved] Why would EndeavourOS with XFCE4 being going back to the login screen immediately after logging in?

I am running EndeavourOS with XFCE4 and when I enter my password the underscore cursor appears in the top left corner for a moment then I get bounced back to the log in screen. This happened after an update. I don't think I made any other alterations to the system or installed new packages.

From my searching around I tried the following from the terminal:

ls -lah | grep -i Xauthority says that I have rw privileges.

I've tried updating my system using sudo pacman -Syu and yay -Syu.

df -h Says I have 18GB available in /dev/dm-0. I even deleted a couple files to make sure I had space available.

I ran rm ~/.Xauthority.

I made sure session-wrapper=/etc/lightdm/Xsession was in my lightdm.conf.

I tried downgrading the xfce4-session package but that didn't work so I updated it again.

I checked to see if I have libxfce4ui-devel installed instead of libxfce4ui. I only have libxfce4ui installed.

I ran systemctl start xfce4-notifyd.service but it says "Failed to start xfce4-notifyd.service: Unit xfce4-notifyd.service not found". The user posting the question had the same result but that wasn't their solution. They had a fancy tablet plugged in or something.

One of the sign in options in my login screen is for Weston and I am able to login fine to that.

I'm pretty stumped here. I've started getting into loops while searching for an answer online. I feel like it's probably something on the XFCE side but I'm struggling to find out where to begin looking. Some users said to check .xsession-errors but apparently "Failed to fetch NET NUMBER OF DESKTOPS; assuming 0" is a normal message. I don't know about the four other messages but they all seem similar.

Any ideas? Even if it's rechecking something above. Maybe I missed something.

Update:

I downgraded my AMD GPU drivers through pacman and was able to get things working. Does anyone know why upgrading them might have caused my system to act this way? Would it be fine updating them in the future or do I need to make tweaks to my setup?

Update 2:

It seems like it may have been an issue with conflicting graphics drivers. I think at some point I may have installed something related to Nvidia but I'm not certain. It only became an issue after running the update mentioned earlier. I essentially removed everything and installed packages recommended by the Arch Wiki page for graphics. Everything appears to be working now.

What Retro Achievement sets have encouraged you to vary your typical play style?

A lot of Retro Achievement sets consist almost entirely of completing a mission or level under a certain time limit or on a harder difficulty level. I'm more wondering about achievement sets that fall beyond the scope of challenges the game intentionally offers. Achievements sets that almost seem like the self imposed challenges you would give yourself as a kid to spice things up a bit.

Grand Theft Auto 3 for the PS2 for example has several achievements that involve completing missions without using specific weapons. The mission Silence the Sneak normally involves you throwing a grenade into someone's second story apartment but The Best Bartender achievement had me wondering how I could do this without grenades. I spent a while looking for where I could find molotovs in the wild because they weren't available at Ammunation yet and trying to pile up vehicles in a way that would allow me to get one inside the window.

It was pretty fun.

There's several achievements in the set that had me doing some extra levels of strategizing I wouldn't normally do.

I feel like these kind of acheievements are most common in RPGs.

Another example that came to mind was the Master of Seduction achievement in The Urbz: Sims in the City for the GBA which has you romance four different women before leaving the tutorial area.

Does anyone know where I can find a collection of rotating realistic object GIF files?

I have found a few on 4chan. A rotating realistic chicken burger with a transparent background for example.

It seems to be mostly the same 20 or so GIFs in regular circulation.

Ideally I'd like to avoid individual downloads or signing up for an account. I thought someone here may have stumbled across a page on the Internet Archive or something.

Why would I be unable to right click using the touchpad when using EndeavourOS with XFCE4 on a NexDock?

When clicking using the bottom right side of the touchpad on my NexDock nothing happens when using EndeavourOS with XFCE4. When connected to Windows I am able to right click using the touchpad without issues.

Does anyone know how I can remedy this? I feel like it's probably something obvious.

I tried looking under the Mouse and Touchpad settings application but don't see anything that looks relevant. The NexDock does appear as multiple devices. SINO WEALTH NexDock Touchpad Keyboard Consumer Control, SINO WEALTH NexDock Touchpad Keyboard Mouse, and SINO WEALTH NexDock Touchpad Keyboard Touchpad are all listed but only give me the option to switch hands or adjust pointer speed.

If you are interested in modding games to support local split screen co-op you might want to check out Nucleus Co-op | + Links to links to PartyDeck (Linux) and other multiplayer mods

You can check out the full list of supported games here but some examples are Minecraft, Skyrim, Elden Ring, and The Long Dark.

There's a Nucleus Coop Steam curator that can tell you what games on Steam are compatible.

Heads Up

I would recommend reading the notes behind the handler of the game you wish to modify before attempting to install them.

Handlers vary in how local split screen co-op is implemented. Some add it to a normally single player campaign (ex. Fallout New Vegas uses NVMP) while others add it to existing multiplayer modes (ex. Dying Light) or unofficial multiplayer modes (ex. Grand Theft Auto IV uses Grand Theft Auto Connected).

Due to this some games feel more polished than others. The complexity and length of setup also varies but it's generally pretty straightforward. I'd say setup usually takes 30 minutes. The most annoying part for me (besides how sluggish Nucleus Co-op's app feels) was alt-tabbing out of various game windows to configure the settings in game to work.

Linux

All reports I have seen say that Nucleus co-op does not work on Linux despite attempts at tinkering.

The closest alternative I have seen for Linux is PartyDeck. A GamingOnLinux article about it from May 2025 can be found here.

Other alternatives that I have seen recommended like Co-op-on-Linux haven't been updated in years.

Bonus

If you are interested in multiplayer mods in general FMHY has a tab dedicated to multiplayer mods and the website Unmoddable has articles about many of them.

What is the best way to have multiple modded versions of the same Bethesda games?

For example if I want to play Fallout New Vegas with DUST and switch to Nuclear Sunset.

I feel like having multiple installations of the same game is the easiest way if I have the space for it. They would both share the same FalloutNV folder for the INI files and save games and I'm wondering would this cause issues?

It would be easy enough to basically copy files back and forth when I want to play one version versus the other. Maybe a simple batch script that moves a FalloutNV folder into the My Games folder before running the game and, when the game is exited, moves the FalloutNV into the same directory as the game's executables.

I feel like the modding scene for Bethesda games is big enough that there must be an easy, more polished, solution to this.

I tried looking up solutions online but a lot of forums posts get wrapped up in Steam not easily allowing you to have two installs of the same game.

Some older posts recommend applications such as Skyrim Installation Swapper but it seems like people may have moved past them. There hasn't been a new comment in the post tab or update for years.

I imagine profiles and instances provided by managers could help but I don't know how well they do with hundreds of mods. Nuclear Sunset for example uses Tale of Two Wastelands as its base which I feel like could cause issues.

How can I configure Fresh Tomato to act as an access point so I can access Samba shares on the other side?

I have a router with a fresh install of Fresh Tomato so none of the settings have been changed yet. The Samba server is on the other side of the access point.

It seems like it should be as simple as making the following alterations in the Network tab:

WAN0 Settings

Type: DHCP -> Disable

LAN

IP address 192.168.1.1 -> 192.168.0.2, DHCP -> Disable

Default Gateway 0.0.0.0 -> 192.168.0.1, Static DNS 0.0.0.0 -> 192.168.0.1

On my other server I would set the Fresh Tomato router as a static IP address.

Whenever I make all these alterations and click save computers connected to the Fresh Tomato router become disconnected from the internet and I can no longer seem to access the router. I've had to reset it.

Is there something I am missing?

EndeavourOS only booting from initramfs after update. Could use some help figuring out why

Context:

I am running EndeavourOS on my X200S that has Libreboot. I have one drive that is encrypted. A while ago I had issues with my system not booting at all and had to switch to the Linux LTS kernel. I ran sudo pacman -Syu recently and after rebooting I've consistently had this issue.

So far I've tried:

  • Reinstalling the linux-lts and linux-lts-headers packages and running mkinitcpio -P. This seems like the typical fix for only being able to boot in intramfs.

  • Switching GRUB to loglevel 7 and when trying to boot normally it seems to get stuck on "timed out waiting for device /dev/disk/UUID/the UUID of EndeavourOS". The messages afterwards are about dependencies failing like /sysroot and United Root File System. From what I could find online this seemed like an issue with my drives being mounted so I tried regenerating fstab with genfstab -U -p / >> /etc/root.

Does anyone have an idea of where things went wrong?

What's the status of the various fan-made Fallout game remakes?

By remakes I mean projects like Fallout 4 Capital Wasteland. They're attempting to recreate Fallout 3 in Fallout 4's engine.

There are several in the works but a lot of them eventually lose momentum and are left in limbo or are cancelled all together. Here is a mod that was attempting to recreate the original Fallout in Fallout New Vegas for example. It was cancelled after an extended period of time without any major updates in 2019.

A lot of them also have their own websites or post updates on different platforms like VK, YouTube, Facebook, or Discord so they can be a bit of a challenge to follow. Could someone save me some digging and let me know how they're progressing? Are there any new projects in the works?

I'd be interested in Van Buren remakes as well if you have details.

[Update] Does anyone know how to set the real time clock in PlumOS on the GXD Pixel 2? Is PlumOS still the best option?

I'm playing Pokemon Unbound and the clock is out of wack. It also think it's 2024.

I've tried the following options:

  • Emulation Station - There's a section to change the time zone but I would need to set the time zone incorrectly to display the correct time.

  • RetroArch - I couldn't find anything.

  • IUX (the basic system UI) - There's a section to change the time and date under the settings tab. It was way off. Years in the past and completely the wrong time. Changing the settings didn't do anything.

What I think would fix it would be connecting it to the internet using a driverless dongle and a USB C adapter. Unfortunately my wireless adapter doesn't seem to work so I would have to buy another one.

My RG Nano had an option to configure the RTC (real time clock) so I thought there might be a standalone app for it but if there is something like that in PlumOS I can't find it.

The Retro Games Corps How to Make the GKD Pixel II Software Suck Less doesn't seem to say anything about this.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Update: I just read about Rogue OS and it apparently has an app similar to the one I had on my RG Nano. Is one OS really more feature rich than the other?

Update 2: I switched to Rogue OS. The setup process was a bit weird. I had to flash version one then update the SYSTEM file to get the latest version.

Rogue OS seems fine. There were some shaders turned on for GBA I didn't care for and the firmware uses a different core for GBA so I changed both.

Ship of Harkinian and 2 Ship 2 Harkinian: The unofficial PC ports of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask

Here is the Wikipedia page about Ship of Harkinian and some information from the article

Ship of Harkinian is an unofficial open source port of the 1998 Nintendo 64 video game The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time that runs on Microsoft Windows, Linux, macOS, Wii U, and Nintendo Switch. It has also been ported to the Android operating system by a third party developer.

It was first released in March 2022 for Windows, four months after Ocarina of Time's source code was decompiled and released. Since then, Ship of Harkinian has received ports to Linux and macOS, and homebrew ports to Wii U and Nintendo Switch.

Updates to Ship of Harkinian have attracted media attention, as they often integrate options and features which aren't present in any official release of Ocarina of Time.

The title of the project is an allusion to the philosophical thought experiment Ship of Theseus, as well as the name of the King from The Legend of Zelda CD-i games, who was infamous for the internet memes spawned from the games.

Here are the respective GitHub pages:

Here is Game Banana page if you are looking for mods:

Here are the respective PCGamingWiki pages

Here are some GamingOnLinux articles about the projects:

Numerous other sources such Kutako, PCGamer, The Verge, Ars Technica, and GamesRadar also wrote articles about them primarily between 2022 and 2023.

Bonus:

If you are interested in this you might be interested in other PC ports of Nintendo 64 games like Star Fox 64, Perfect Dark, Doom 64, Dinosaur Planet, and Super Mario 64. It's worth noting many of these projects have Linux releases and run great on the Steam Deck or emulator handhelds (ex. RG35XXSP) using PortMaster.

RetroAchievement's list of PSP games that don't require an analog stick and list of DS games that don't require a touch screen + ROM hacks to remove their requirement

If you have a device like the Miyoo Mini Plus that has no touch screen or analog sticks this might be helpful.

RetroAchievements

ROMHacking .net

The RetroAchievement's lists aren't complete. A lot of games haven't been catalogued on the RetroAchievement's website. I imagine results are also going to vary a lot from game to game. For example Stardew Valley can be played with PortMaster on handhelds like the RG35XXSP, you don't need analog sticks a majority of the time, but you do need analog sticks to move around where you want to position buildings on your farm. It wouldn't surprise me if stuff like that comes up.

How has your experience been playing DS and PSP games on devices without touch screens and analog sticks? Can you think of any games that you would recommend?

I'd be interested to hear any other ROM hacks that remove or minimize their use.

The information above is from the Release Notes section of the GitHub page. The actual change log page has more information.

Has anyone tried it out yet on the RG35XXSP?

I was unsuccessful in getting a lot of PortMaster games working Knulli despite following the recommended installation instructions. My post from nearly a year ago about trying to get Stardew Valley working can be found here. I was able to get PortMaster working on MuOS at the time but I prefer Knulli's frontend.

I also noticed an issue where connecting a display to the HMDI output would not work and prevent the system from booting though I admittedly only tried this briefly.

The developer has stated because it's a major update people need to reflash their SD cards. Most of the changes that come with this update aren't things I care about so I figured I'd ask before switching over.

Apparently there is some kind of fix for exFAT file systems in regards to PortMaster so I may try that first. I'm relatively confident my system is running EXT4 though.

A shortish review of Fallout 76 + Does anyone on PC want to play together?

I'm about 30 hours into Fallout 76 so far and I'm surprised how much I am enjoying it. There's a lot of unique locations and creatures that make exploring fun. The MMO part of the game isn't super blatant outside of the microtransactions for skins and certain items. When I do come across other players it's usually because I stumbled into their camp and we just emote at each other a couple times before I move on. I don't think there is a way to actually talk with other players outside. I think there might be voice chat but I haven't tried it. The story seems pretty shallow though and mostly done through terminal entries and notes. I haven't really felt compelled to follow the main story line. I've been slowly working my way East then South doing miscellaneous quests along the way and exploring.

I'll probably play at least another 30 hours. I am not too sure how grindy late game quests will be. It costs caps to fast travel and they aren't as easy to come across as they are in Fallout 4 so if quests objectives have me wandering back and forth across long distances I've already explored I could see that getting tiring in a hurry for example.

The only bug I've come across was being unable to move sporadically in the over world and consistently being unable to move indoors. It turns out this was due to my high FPS and I needed to cap it using AMD Chill.

I do wonder what was added in the Wastelanders DLC and how the game was before it.

TL:DR I'd say it's worth picking up on sale and if you want to explore a bit. It doesn't feel as deep as other Fallout games but it's something.

Does anyone here want to play together? I'm on PC and mostly wandering around exploring but keep dumping most of my ammo into Sheepsquatchs. If you do want to play together shoot me a message and I'll give you my Steam ID.

Can someone tell me the name of a Balatro mod that allows me to play additional jokers? +Links to Balatro mods

Basically I'm looking for a deck mod that has additional joker slots. I've probably modded in over 100 new jokers and want to try some over powered combinations.

I'm thinking a deck mod would be ideal because I could still play vanilla decks, I still want some level of randomness and don't really want to pick and choose which jokers I get, and if this was done with spectral/tarot cards I would have to go through the process of finding them.

Here are some links I used to find the Balatro mods I use now by the way

The Wiki is probably the best source I have come across because a majority of the time it lists exactly what the mod is adding. It does kind of take away a bit of the mystery but I feel like it's worth it if you want to know how well a mod is going to mesh with the game.

What is the equivalent of doing a stealth archer build in other games?

By 'stealth archer equivalent' I mean the stereotypical easy/newbie or basic bitch way to play the game. It may be easy to pivot to and get stuck in a rut of playing that way.

I thought about this while playing Balatro. I kept trying to do creative combinations like Stone Joker and Marble Joker to see how far I could go with stone cards and pairs but pretty much always end up doing 8 Ball flushes.
