What Biden *really* says about Trump behind closed doors

“At his rally, he jokes about an intruder, whipped up by the Big Trump Lie, taking a hammer to Paul Pelosi’s skull,” Biden said.

“And he thinks that’s funny,” the president continued. “He laughed about it. What a sick …”

Biden let his voice trail off as the crowd cheered and chuckled.

In private, he doesn’t stop short.

The president has described Trump to longtime friends and close aides as a “sick fuck” who delights in others’ misfortunes, according to three people who have heard the president use the profane description. According to one of the people who has spoken with the president, Biden recently said of Trump: “What a fucking asshole the guy is.”

Emphasis is mine.

Biden is saying what we’re all thinking here.

Also, being President, I would bet that Biden knows even more secrets about what Trump did during his presidency that aren’t public knowledge.

Republicans erupt into open warfare over Ukraine aid package vote

The backlash was fierce. Marjorie Taylor Greene, the outspoken Georgia congresswoman, immediately filed a resolution demanding Johnson’s removal, called the bill a “sham”.

“I don’t care if the speaker’s office becomes a revolving door,” Taylor Greene told Steve Bannon, Trump’s former adviser, on his War Room channel. “The days are over of the old Republican party that wants to fund foreign wars and murder people in foreign lands while they stab the American people in their face and refuse to protect Americans and fix our problems.”

Good ol’ Marjorie being a Russian asset again.

How do we feel about federating with Threads?

My main concern is that this is just Facebook Meta utilizing the “Embrace, Extend, Extinguish” strategy that Microsoft used against Netscape in the 90s.

I feel like our small communities here - which are just getting started - are going to be flooded by Threads users who don’t even know what federation is and then all the content, power & control will realistically be in Meta’s hands.

My gut says that is probably Meta’s goal, but what do I know? I’m just some internet person.

Is is possible to see who upvoted/downvoted a specific comment?

Reply in thread

It actually already is a feature. Kbin puts it upfront, and I think lemmy also has a way to access it.

I think it remains to be seen whether or not it’s a good idea.

I’ve seen some people say they like the idea because it make people think twice about downvoting - it cuts back on the instinctive “I don’t like this so I am gonna downvote.”

But, as you said, do we really want people coming after you because you downvoted them? There are crazy ass people out there, and if you ever get doxxed it could be a problem.

Maybe that last point is hyperbole, but crazy people are gonna do crazy things.

Biden ‘not sure’ he’d run in 2024 if Trump wasn’t running: ‘We cannot let him win’

The 46th president’s advanced age has led a small number of Democrats to call for him to stand aside in favour of a younger, presumably more vigorous candidate who, in his critics’ telling, would easily best Mr Trump.

But while speaking at a fundraiser outside Boston on Tuesday, Mr Biden said Mr Trump’s persistence on the political scene is why he is not stepping aside in favour of a new generation.

Biden is old, but I think it’s important to remember he did beat Trump in 2020, and that was after Trump had sent signed stimulus checks to nearly every American household just a few weeks before. It was a good campaign.

I would love to see a younger candidate; 82 is old for any job. But right now, I think Biden is the best we have got.

Hopefully, we can stop Trump once and for all this time. I don’t want to see the world where he gets back into the oval office.

Edit: clarity

A case for preemptively defederating with Threads

Very well said and you have captured many of my exact fears.

Personally, if the decentralized fediverse was more developed and mature, I would not be as concerned about federating with Threads. But, Meta is entering at a time when everything is really just starting to develop.

They’ll be the big instance and they’ll have a lot of influence over the others as a result.

Just to give an example, What would happen if Lemmy.world decided to cut off kbin? Kbin would lose a ton of content and access to most of the large communities. Threads, thanks to Meta’s resources and huge Instagram user base, will likely gain more active users and communities than lemmy in no time and they could do the same. The difference is I believe Meta may be more likely to down the line because an open fediverse doesn’t fit super nicely into their business model.

I understand many people disagree and that is fine; nobody knows the future. If we decide to federate with Threads then so be it, and if it turns out I am totally wrong then I will eat my words. All I am trying to articulate is that I think there is reason to be skeptical of Meta.

Michigan GOP, on ‘the brink of bankruptcy,’ broke campaign finance laws, report alleges

“In only a matter of a few months, the party is essentially non-functional and, worse yet, the party and others associated with the party are now facing potential civil and criminal consequences for breaking laws,” the report says.

This is case & point for what happens when you let the crazy people run your state party.

Now, if someone finds the world’s tiniest violin, please let me know. In the meantime, I will also be looking for a nice bottle of champagne.

Nikki Haley surges in poll to within four points of Republican leader Trump

On the one hand, if Nikki Haley does manage to dethrone Trump and get the republican nomination the US will be in a better place. (I don’t think she is capable of cultivating a cult-like mentality like Trump so she won’t be a dictator.)

On the other hand, I can foresee a scenario where she is a very difficult opponent for Biden to overcome and actually win the White House. That would pretty much guarantee Project 2025 happening.

Live Updates: Trump Prevails in Supreme Court Challenge to His Eligibility

Though the justices offered different reasons, the decision was unanimous.

[…]

[…] The provision was adopted after the Civil War to forbid those who had taken an oath “to support the Constitution of the United States” from holding office if they then “shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof.”

[…]

The case, Trump v. Anderson, No. 23-719, is not the only one concerning Mr. Trump on the Supreme Court’s docket. The justices said last week they would decide whether he was immune from prosecution for his role in the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, delaying trial proceedings in his criminal case as they consider the matter. And the justices already agreed to decide on the scope of a central charge in the federal election-interference case against Mr. Trump, with a ruling by June.

There you have it - a unanimous ruling, though the three liberal justices had a different logic than the six conservative ones.

The only way Americans will be rid of Trump is by voting for Biden in November.

Jack Smith calls out Trump defence for forgetting when the Capitol riot happened

In a new legal filing, the prosecutor criticised the former president’s attorneys for writing that Mr Smith’s team “has been investigating this matter for three and a half years, while the defense is starting with a blank slate”.

“Not only is this claim impossible, as January 6, 2021, was two and a half years ago, but it is disingenuous,” the Special Counsel’s office wrote.

These are attorneys for a former president of the United States. You'd think they would be a bit more competent, but I guess this is what happens when you don't pay your attorneys or take their advice. Donald Trump is left with the bottom of the barrel.

Personally, I hope the January 2nd date holds. I don't know if there is anything he can do to delay it, and from what I've read this judge has been pretty harsh on the January 6th insurrectionists that have come her way.
