Biden ‘not sure’ he’d run in 2024 if Trump wasn’t running: ‘We cannot let him win’
Mr Biden is looking to become the oldest US president to be re-elected to a second term

Biden is old, but I think it’s important to remember he did beat Trump in 2020, and that was after Trump had sent signed stimulus checks to nearly every American household just a few weeks before. It was a good campaign.
I would love to see a younger candidate; 82 is old for any job. But right now, I think Biden is the best we have got.
Hopefully, we can stop Trump once and for all this time. I don’t want to see the world where he gets back into the oval office.
Edit: clarity
So I am not gonna argue the point of Biden being the best we’ve, already having that in a different thread about this statement. But I truly hope you don’t think the fascism is gonna stop if Trump loses, this fight against the far right is now one we will likely have for the rest of our lives. As climate change continues accelerating more scared people will look to craven strongmen and charlatans to make them feel safe and or comfortable.
Responding from my Lemmy.world account because for some reason your comment is not federating (or at least not yet).
No, I do not think fascism will suddenly stop with Trump, but his final defeat will certainly take the wind out of its sails; other republican politicians do not command the level of loyalty he does.
Trump is unlike any US politician I have seen. He is a cult of personality, and that makes him much more dangerous than the others who are (presumably) just as vulnerable as normal politicians. Trump broke a lot of political norms and was able to get away with all of them and I don’t think the rest would be able to.
Desantis has the charisma of a snail, and would be unable to cultivate a cult of personality. He is totally uninspiring.
Ramaswamy could, in theory, develop a cult of personality but he is pandering to racists.
Nikki Haley has to contend with a sexist political base. (Though, if she did get the nomination I think the democrats would be right to be worried because I think she could actually win where DeSantis and Ramaswamy would not)
Chris Christie is dedicated to sinking Trump, but his own political history proves he would not be a cult of personality.
There are obviously still parts of the republican party that are very worrying and we will always need to mobilize liberals and progressives to make sure they don’t enact their agendas. But, Trump has made it pretty clear he doesn’t respect the will of the people, and has the cult of personality around him to make sure he doesn’t leave until he’s dead and has an appointed heir.
I definitely agree with your assessments of current GOP leaders, I just don’t believe we should focus on Trump exclusively as the final boss, not saying you were doing that I’m just playing defense.
While you’re right that he is a very specific cult of personality I think the biggest danger is that he both exposes the grift of lying to the far and religious right and additionally he made it ok to say the fucked up shit out loud. Hope you’re right but I think we have a long road ahead even not factoring in the other existential crises we’re about to have to stare down
I'm not a Biden fan myself so I'm not looking to argue with your answer I'm just curious who you think the best choice to run would be, both against Trump specifically and in general if he weren't a factor?
I don’t a particular candidate in mind and it’s too late in any case, I think they should have had a primary so that whoever did run had a chance to build a head of steam and gain a following, with Biden putting his full weight behind only the chosen candidate and maybe in my wildest dreams use the current wave of union wins to usher in a more pro labor DNC. I realize the second half of that hope is a pipe dream
But I do think that just a democratic candidate would have an advantage over Trump by simply not having been the president the past four years, four rough years for the average American economically which is what the average American votes on, obviously the state of inflation isn’t Biden’s fault, we came out of a fucking world stopping pandemic that started before he took office and corporations have gotten extremely bold in their exploitation. BUT voters are going to put it on him because that’s how being the president works for some reason.
I’m voting for Biden, I know it’s the right thing to do, I’m just expressing doubt that this was the right move based on my read on folks I interact with, I really don’t think he has a prayer. Really want to be wrong
You summed up my thoughts pretty well. I'm not sure I think Trump will win against Biden but you never know. I definitely agree with what you said earlier though, no matter what happens with Trump we're going to be fighting against fascism for the foreseeable future. Republicans have made it clear they aren't interested in compromise or playing by the rules. There's no putting that cat back in the bag unless we beat it unconscious, so to speak.
Biden, regardless of what one thinks of him, has totally bungled all public messaging in his presidency. No claimed victories, and constantly alienating the younger/active left. Look at this article, it doesn't inspire confidence to suggest "yeah it's past my time but..."
I think enough Americans hate a loser more than they fear a fascist. Not a majority, but enough in the right places. I'm hoping for divine intervention at this point
By doing so though, Trump will try again until he turns 90 himself...unless the bigmacs get him by then
