GNOME June 2024: C'mon you can do better

I hope they continue learning lessons from other OSes.

I'm feeling like you are wrong about them outright copying. Some good things can be taken from macOS and Windows. But a lot of bad things too, which is why they are thinking it through.

Please do not reduce the community effort to "cloning macOS". It's insulting to the people working on it... Apple doesn't own modals or modal design.

Here there are not 20 ways of putting 3 buttons in a modal. They just happen to choose a way that will also work on mobile I guess.

Kudos for noticing this extra space which could enhance these kind of modals though.

I don't like everything Gnome has been doing, especially with the lack of customization or the status bar. But Gnome has been my go to for 7+ years and I like where it is going. Extensions are pretty fly too 👌

Self-portraits of Joseph Ducreux, 18th century French painter

Reply in thread

French here.

The older version (kinda out of fashion) is "Quoi de neuf?" literally "What's new?".

Today we would say "Ça dit quoi ?" which is literally "What you saying?" I guess. But as you may have guessed it's kinda of a street/not so polite way of phrasing it.

I personally use "Ça va ?" at work which is "Are you OK today?" literally, not to be confused with "Are you OK?!" which is the English way of checking that someone is not hurt I guess, though it can be used in the same way "Ça va ?!" to check on someone hurt is fine.

Finally it would be "Comment allez-vous ?" for the polite equivalent, like for a stranger or an official.

Have you tried NixOS?

Reply in thread

Very well built patches and ways to share them. This is a good thing for gaming as we can try bleeding edge like Arch. But without having to rely on AUR or scripts to copy locally. Thanks to Nix Flakes you simply reference the flake someone shared (after double checking what is in it) and rebuild a NixOS derivation and voila, patch installed. I installed a complete SteamOS in 1 minute with this, reboot and everything works. Even with your locally signed in Steam account 👌

Alternatives to Roku/AppleTV for Jellyfin Client

Way over-budget for your taste I guess but I still wanted to make a note here for representation sake. Look into the brand Zidoo. I have Zidoo Z9X 8K, it's the best client I could dream of! ~250$

Cons:

  • Android based (outdated AF but still)
  • Maybe not so secure (http server always on while the device is on, atm)

Pros:

  • Very good support of Dolby Vision, 4K (8K maybe?)
  • Very pretty, both hardware and software very polished IMO
  • The remote is glorious, tactile with backlight
  • Lots of other cool things
  • Very snappy Android experience
  • it just works™
  • The audio downmixing works great, compared to the Google TV which was very bad
  • First party Jellyfin support among others

I am abandoning Arc Raiders because Embark is stealing voices through AI

Reply in thread

First, please stay civil. I didn't insult you. Don't insult me.

Secondly I mark the difference between the accessibility feature of voice changer and the voice lines that could have been 100% recorded by a professional voice actor to begin with.

Because in the second case, this is just cost-cutting in order to maximise profit on the back of voice actors imho.

Marketing this as “text-to-speech” is oversimplyfying at best, dishonest at worst. People need to work, we can’t blame the voice actors. But in the end they still are working against themselves/their peers by allowing corporations/studios to copy their unique features to prevent working with them in the future.

What's the boundary for us as a collective then? What amount of AI slop are we going to accept in the future if we allow corporations to AI-creep into everything?

I agree that this technology isn't going back in Pandora's box. But I can at least vote with my wallet and with my voice to support what I think isn't the right direction.

Even though the voice actors signed the contract: I, as a customer/fan, don't want workers signing off their ability to work more. These voice actors won't ever work again with Embark now, Embark don't need another recording session from them. Ok, actors waved that opportunity away willingly. But I don't want the whole industry to become like this.

It's not because the genAI trend isn't going away that we aren't allowed to adapt to it. My adaptation is to fight for a AI-free label.

PS: On another front, Embark has made millions, if not more on this game. Don't tell me they HAD to use genAI instead of paying those voice actors for reshoot to begin with.

I talked about the usage of Machine Learning for the ARCs behavior in the original post. I'm cool with that. But I don't call this genAI. The machine learning technology is fine, the pillaging of resources to create what they call "genAI" is not fine to me.

Now I do agree that, at least for me, if the voice actors are paid for each line generated: there is no problem. I'm willing to hear that in this case it is only for the quicker pipeline. But maybe I am the cynical one: I'm convinced that it is not the case, the actors were paid for the recording sessions, not the subsequent generated lines. I would be delighted to hear otherwise from a good source.

I agree that the fondamental problem is how AI is destroying business and ultimately people.
